Starved Rock is a great second choice for those of you wanting to move to Mars. The park is best known for its sandstone canyons, carved out by glacial meltwater and stream erosion. During the early spring thaw and rains, dazzling waterfalls can be found at the heads of all the 18 canyons. Their vertical, moss-covered walls create a stunning, fecund environment that’s not commonly found in Illinois⸺and definitely not on Mars.

13 miles of hiking trails are open year-round for visitors to explore. There’s fishing and boating opportunities in certain areas of the neighboring Illinois River. Each of the park’s campsites has electricity and a grill pit for your weenie roastin’ and s’moresin’. If you’d prefer a touch of luxury, check out the park’s lodge. Though it’s been refurbished since its construction in the 1930s, the peaceful atmosphere of yesteryear endures.
