If you're among the many who go weak in the knees for Northern California’s rugged coastline, a Bodega Bay camping trip will feel nothing short of magical. Here on the Sonoma Coast, a completely serene and peaceful environment brimming with marine wildlife and delicious seafood awaits, just over 60 miles from San Francisco. Camp along the beach at Doran Campground, Wright’s Beach Campground, Fort Ross Reef Campground, or Sonoma Coast State Beach. Lace up your boots for one of the region’s many picturesque hikes—some nice options are the Pinnacle Gulch Trail, the Pomo Canyon Trail, and the trails at Bodega Head Beach. While strolling Bodega’s dreamy beaches, keep your eyes peeled for sand dollars, seals, monarch butterflies, and shorebirds. You can even catch sight of whales here from December through April. At low tide, breathe in the salty coastal air while perusing tide pools for starfish, sea urchins, crabs, and other sea life. Bodega Bay is also a prime area for kayaking, biking, and fishing. If you’re looking to learn more about the local marine wildlife, visit to the UC Davis Bodega Marine Laboratory, the Marine Mammal Center, or the Chanslor Wetlands Wildlife Project.
