If you like being left alone and having access to roam, this is great spot. Although it feels far from the main street, the road noise is quite noticeable. It didn't disrupt us tho. There's some nice hammock spots in his woods & open space for star gazing .Great location for a base camp, with all the area has to offer. It's primitive style camping. Sam was very cool. I'd be happy to return.
Past trip
in Uraharas On The Hill, MichiganMarcy's effort to make campers feel welcome & cared for is extraordinary. We were the only campers there and had total privacy. The three sites are spread out enough & fairly secluded. I imagine, even with other campers on grounds it would still feel quite private. It would be an amazing place to group camp as well, particularly if you had a bunch of musicians to use the beautifully built stages. There is some road noise but nothing extreme. Finding it & driving up the hill was no problem. Great base camp for all the nearby activities.
Past trip
in Ice Age Retreat, WisconsinGreat location, private spot
If you're a mt. biker, the access to both John Muir & Emma Carlin trails couldn't be much more convenient. Bald Bluff hiking trail & Palmyra are minutes away too. Very accessible, yet secluded location. If you have the place to yourself, it's entirely private. It's basically a small grassy field surrounded by woods. Unfortunately, we didn't stay because of steady rain. The high grass was too wet to enjoy. I'll definitely go back. It's about the same price as the increasing cost of Pinewoods campground. However, it's very primitive, no picnic table which is mentioned in notes. Those who need a proper toilet may not find the tent set up ideal. But it is close enough to town...
Past trip
The Willow Ranch
in The Willow Ranch, MichiganSites at Willow Ranch vary from to the nicely wooded & fairly secluded to wide open & exposed. There are plenty of options. Some have fire pits & picnic benches, some don't. It's a unique place for sure. It seems to be a work in progress with art installation & sculptures in the mix. It may not be for everyone but we certainly enjoyed the easy going vibe. Weekday stay was nice & quiet.
Past trip
in East Woods on the IL River, IllinoisEasy stay for starved rock visits
Katie is an excellent host. Laid back, helpful & fun to talk with.
Goose creek is tucked away at the back of her long property. You can pitch a tent in the woodsy area surrounding the fire pit. There is limited room back there but it certainly feels secluded despite being a very short distance to the wide open yard (where we slept in our van). The trains are something to consider if that kinda thing disrupts your sleep. Didn't bother me but I sure heard them. The town of Ottawa is charming with plenty of places to eat & drink. Dockside Bar has a lovely riverside setting with huge patio & decent bar food. We also had a solid, friendly experience at Court Street Pub, with surprisingly good fare. Great place to watch a game too. If you're looking for an easy in & out place to explore the area, Goose Creek Lost Acre is a nice convenient option.
Past trip
in Gypsy camp, MichiganQuiet & secluded with easy access.
Anne has figured out a great way to set up camp for travelers wanting privacy & ease. She's created a small clearing in a wooded section of her property that feels more remote than it actually is. You can't see it from the site but the port'a potty is just a short walk down a wide path toward the area where Anne & family live. In my mind, this is what Hip Camp is all about. Through down a fire pit with picnic table in a secluded space and viola! Hipcamp. Anne herself, is gregarious, helpful, prompt & accommodating. She even supplied us with a two gallon cooler jug of potable water which certainly came in handy. Bugs weren't too bad but I'd be prepared for that. The nearby small town of Buchanan is quite charming. Even closer, there's a great looking Bar patio at Cameron's, overlooking a river. Unfortunately it was closed. We didn't roam the property or attempt to befriend the pig but I found it all pretty ideal and will certainly return.
Past trip
in McDundee Hollow, WisconsinIdeal basecamp in private setting
Mark has created an ideal setting to comfortably glamp without being around other campers, in a great location.
The property is very easy to find with many nearby hiking/biking trails and lakes to explore. The small, windowed cabin, feels quite secluded in the lovely wide open meadow. It's very quiet. Rarely will a car pass by. Cooking essentials are provided, including: fridge, electric hot water heater, pop-up toaster & electric burner (you may need to read the instructions and find the proper pan), There isn't much to explore on the property itself, but the big fire pit is an ideal spot for star gazing. There's plenty of room to pitch a tent by the fire as well. There's room for lawn games and a nice tree house in the distance for children to safely roam. Regrettably, I didn't bring my sleeping pad. It would've provided more comfort and warmth on the bunk bed cots. The electric heater works nicely and there is a small vacuum to keep floor tidy. The compost toilet is clean and simple to use--a nicer experience than your standard outhouse. The rain water collection system and dish washing station are practical, helpful and a huge perk on a property without other water source. Drinkable five gallon water jugs are also provided. Do to Covid, we weren't able to explore any nearby restaurants or bars. Rats! Next time. McDundee Hollow is an ideal hip camp with the just enough comforts without going overboard. It's called camping, after all.
p.s. Mt Bikers: Greenbush is a fun, challenging and unrelentingly bumpy ride. It takes some skill & stamina. New Fane is a more gentle, yet exhilarating experience, if you're slightly less adept on single track. Both are close by, beautiful, well maintained biker only trails.

Beaver Haven is unique experience. You won't find the amenities of typical campsite but you will be able to explore land that is allowed to be in its natural state. There aren't many clear paths but that doesn't need to stop you from roaming the beautiful hills & meadows. Bill is fascinating, kind and generous. I wished I had more time to hear details of his life story and his commitment to land preservation. When we popped our mattress by dragging it too close to the barbwire cow fence, he readily provided us a patch kit. It was an interesting site choice-- inside the cow pasture. It proved worthy. The pet cow (horns and all) was lovely and gracious in allowing us to set up bedside her stream. Taryn, who had the hip camp vision, recently passed. There is a moving burial site on the land. The only noise we experienced, was the trickle of the stream, the many bird calls & the clatter of a passing Amish carriage. We weren't far from the road but there's very few cars to disrupt the peace you'll find on this powerful land.

Site 5 - Forest Shade 2
in Healing Hills, WisconsinThoughtful hosts & lovely site
Pat & Beth clearly take great pride in sharing their gorgeous property. Details (wood delivered to site, clear signage, site designated toilet etc.) have been thoughtfully provided to make this stay comfortable & convenient. The sites/water/toilets are in a fairly compact area. You won't need to rough it to enjoy this experience. There are many meandering trails you're welcome to roam. It can be quite steep. Wish I had brought a walking stick. Although, Pat & their sweet dog have no problem traversing at a fast pace.
