A Texas Hill Country ranch with uncrowded “primitive” campsites about 8 miles from Fredericksburg and about 12 miles from Enchanted Rock. There is no running water, no electricity and no WiFi at the campsite. There is a picnic table, some chairs, a fire ring with some firewood and a portable toilet. This site is suited to tent camping, car camping and small RV "dry camping". There is relative privacy, hopefully starry nights and campfire provisions. Guests share a pasture with livestock and wildlife. Weather in all its variations is part of camping. If you are not prepared to deal with whatever the weather may be, you should consider another option. We encourage guests to research this destination before booking, carefully review our cancellation policy, and consider buying travel insurance to protect against unexpected travel disruptions. Weather conditions are not an acceptable reason for a refund or change of reservation for this campsite. Cellular service is limited here. AT&T provides a good signal in this area. HOWEVER **** SPRINT, VERIZON and T-MOBILE may have “VERY POOR” or “NONEXISTENT” cellular signals at this site. We have neighbors, and although the place is relatively large, and we don't anticipate a problem, there is no guarantee that you will not be bothered by some kind of noise. Likewise, we don’t want our neighbors bothered by any noise coming from you. People live out in the country to enjoy separation of space. Please be considerate of others and keep noise to a minimum. Observe quiet time after 9 pm and before 8 am. The country roads in this area are paved and they are excellent for walking, bicycling and driving. There are “cattle guards” in the roadways. Cattle guards are steel pipe obstacles along a road intended to prevent livestock, such as sheep and cattle from passing out of a fenced area. If you book this property you will be able to check yourself in at the property. The specific location and other check in details will be provided to you on the day of your scheduled arrival, and after housekeeping and campsite make-ready is complete. Most any car should be just fine for accessing the campsite, except in the case of very wet weather. Guests are not allowed to use firearms or fireworks on this property.

Please conserve water when you can when cooking, washing up and cleaning. No washing of cars or RVs is allowed. Please note that there might be other guests staying on the property during your visit. We are within a quarter mile (walking distance) to the Old Tunnel State Park and Alamo Springs Cafe bragging the best burgers in Texas. We are also three miles from famous Bankersmith and ten miles from Luckenbach. Fredericksburg town is 20 minutes and there are many wineries in the area. We also live on the property (building a house) so we can be of some help if needed. 23 miles away you have Blanco State Park. Situated along a one-mile stretch of the spring-fed Blanco River, the small but mighty Blanco State Park is very family-friendly, offering the spectacular Falls Dam, nature trails, fishing, tubing, kayaking, and deep water for a good, refreshing swim. The stocked river is teeming with largemouth and Guadalupe bass, catfish, sunfish, and rainbow trout, and can be an excellent place for beginning anglers (you can even borrow equipment for free)

The Ranch is our place we like to go when we need to get away. It's raw and it's nice land to camp, explore and enjoy wildlife. We have a Wildlife Exemption on the property and enjoy managing native song birds. We keep a constant flow of bird seed located in feeders around the ranch, and we have seen all kinds of birds making this a great place for birders. The ranch has nice elevation changes with a wet weather creek that traverses the property. There are some trails to hike or mountain bike. The cabin is rustic without plumbing or electricity, but we enjoy it and it's fun to think it's everything we would need. This is off-grid living all the way, and we are constantly learning new and better ways to do things. The cabin is located on the very first spot we pitched a tent after purchasing the land, and we continue to make improvements as we go. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do.

We really enjoyed our stay here. Communication was great from the beginning and they were super hospitable to us during our stay here. We only got to spend a limited time here since we were there to visit inks lake and enchanted rock during the day. It was just a short drive to both and very convenient. Had so much fun trying to get pictures with the longhorns too. Hopefully we can come back and visit again.

There was a beautiful view of the river that provided a great place to see sunrise and sunset. The river was accessible, but by a hill so I would keep that in mind if you have difficulty with steep inclines. Clear, cool and clean waters! Little to no light pollution allowing for an incredible view of the stars at night. It is by a county road so there was some road noise but not frequent. We will definitely be back in the future!

French Connection Wines is right next door and the renowned William Chris Vineyards is just 1 mile away. Not to be missed is the Garrison Brother's Bourbon Distillery, less than a mile down the street – you could even walk to all three! Our property features a shared, covered outdoor patio with a games court for corn hole, checkers, and bocce (checkers, boards and balls provided), gas fire pit, and a gas grill for those cooler nights. The patio is lighted with cafe lights. One of the RV slips is covered, while the other is nestled under a charming burr oak tree. On-site, we also offer a rental cabin. The covered RV slip is equipped with 30 and 50 amps, the other hookup is 50 amp, both have their own water and clean out connections. Both RV slips are on grass/dirt, and the entrance/exit is grass and dirt. *****IF IT RAINS heavily while you are here, please use the paved driveway to exit the property as you may get stuck in the grass at the big double gate.***** Our property uses rain water recapture. Please conserve water when you can when cooking, washing up and cleaning. No washing of cars or RVs is allowed. Please note that there might be other guests staying on the property during your visit. Overview

About

Enchanted Rock is a place of legend, and a true Texas treasure. Rising up 425 feet, the famous pink granite dome has been attracting visitors for thousands of years, many of whom come to scale to the top and experience the views for themselves. The park also offers 11 miles of hiking trails, some excellent rock climbing, and wildlife spotting. Don’t forget your tent if you want to spend the night—all 50 walk-in and hike-in campsites are fairly basic and for tent campers only. On the upside, the stargazing is fantastic at this International Dark Sky Park.

Notable campgrounds

  • Best for easy access: The Walk-in Campsites require the least amount of walking, and offer picnic tables, fire rings, and grills, with water and restrooms nearby.
  • Best to escape the crowds: The Moss Lake Primitive Campsites requires a one- to three-mile hike in, and has composting toilets nearby.
  • Best for groups: The Buzzards Roost Group Camping Area offers space for up to 50, and has a dedicated parking area a quarter-mile from the campsite.

Tips for snagging a campsite

  1. During peak season, plan to make a reservation as soon as you know your dates. Regular campsites can be reserved up to five months in advance and group camps up to 12 months in advance. 
  2. If your plans are flexible, try to visit during the week, during non-holiday periods, or over the summer for thinner crowds. The park is open year-round.
  3. If you don’t have a reservation, arrive at the park first thing in the morning to grab a potential unreserved site.

When to go

The busiest times in the park are September through May. Summer is a good time to escape the crowds, although temperatures can reach close to 100°F. Rain may cause the Summit Trail and other elevated areas of the park to close—check the weather before finalizing plans. Visit in spring to see wildflowers in bloom, including the iconic bluebonnets.

Know before you go

  • The park store sells firewood, while visitors should bring their own drinking water.
  • All park trails close 30 minutes after sunset, except the Loop Trail. Pets are only allowed on the Loop Trail.
  • There is limited shade on trails. Bring sun protection and plenty of water.
  • Neither bikes nor swimming are allowed on the trails.
  • All climbers must check in at the headquarters and sign a waiver. Trees and plants cannot be used for protection, anchoring, or rappelling. Run-outs are common. Many rappels also require a 70-meter rope.
  • Fires are only allowed in fire rings, and not allowed in primitive areas. Gathering of firewood is prohibited.

Walnut Springs Primitive Campground
Plenty of shady spots to choose from in this area. Unfortunately for us, a boy scout troop moved in at 1 AM! I think this might be a more crowded campground as it is a short hike from the parking lot. Moss Lake may be a better bet for a more secluded night, but it may depend on the day. Ask the rangers before heading out which campground has had more check-ins!

I took my kids (4 and 6) primitive camping for the first time at Enchanted Rock. The Moss Lake campground was spectacular. We were very lucky to be the ONLY ones at the campground on a busy spring weekend. If you want to stay in a popular park but not be surrounded by people, check this out! The nearby composting toilet was a great amenity. Tap water is only a ~1.25 mile hike away and we drank filtered water from the lake. I'm not sure if they've changed the rules recently but I was explicitly told "no hammocks" when checking in.

Moss Lake Primitive Campground
Pros: The Enchanted Rock really is unique. Views on top are good, but the rock itself is what is really impressive. Limited light pollution made star gazing nice. PET FRIENDLY!! They had signs up though that they will be limiting the pet friendly areas 03/01/16. CONS: Noisy. People are on the rock from 9am-10pm. Yelling is pretty common up there because it gets so windy. Those yells are heard easily on the ground. Once nightfall came, you could hear cars from the highway hit a cattle guard over and over. Not a lot of room here either. It would be hard to find a site further than 20 yards from a trail. Best for a day hike or family over night. I wouldn't recommend for those accustomed to backcountry camping.

Walk-in Campsites
Camped and visited Enchanted Rock for the first time last weekend for the Geminids Meteor Shower. It's a fantastic place for stargazing that's not too far from Austin. The campsites are walk-ins, so you cannot drive right up to your campsite to unload. We wanted to be closer to the rocks and trails, so we opted to have a few-minute walk from the parking area to our campsite. We were in campsite #35, which was next to some large rocks that helped shield us from the wind and felt more secluded. There are also campsites near the restrooms/showers and parking area that would only be a few steps from your car. There is ice and firewood for sale in the park store (cash only). Bring flashlights/headlamps for walking around at night.

Great changes are coming to Enchanted Rock. When I camped there in September of 2015, I noticed a good number of the walk-up campsites had been disassembled and marked off with survey tape. Turns out, they are retiring about 1/4 of the campsites. This may seem like it would make it harder to get a campsite, but the real advantage of doing this is to allow for more space between campsites and improving the overall camping experience. Also, they are lowering the number of people from the outrageous eight per site to six, which is still quite generous. Enchanted Rock is incredibly popular and with good reason, it's a wonderful park. These changes will only make the camping experience even better in the future.

I love the short hike-in to Moss Lake Primitive Camping and you get an awesome view of Enchanted Rock. If you're looking to escape the weekend crowds of the drive-up campsites this is definitely the spot to do it.

I would not go here for a weekend trip, but one over night or just a day trip is worth it! Its a super cool spot when no one is there. It literally felt like we were at Mars or something. BIG PLUS: they have heaters in the restrooms during the winter!!

Enchanted rock is a must visit in Texas! For great views take the Echo Canyon trail to Mirror Lake..Echo Canyon also has a lot of side trails to explore if you're looking for other things to do besides the Summit Trail!

Enchanted Rock SP recently received recognition from the International Dark Sky Association as an official Dark Sky Park, one of the few in Texas to have this honor. What that means for you is some of the best star gazing the state has to offer can be done just an hour and a half from Austin or San Antonio! If you can't get out to Big Bend or the Davis Mountains, E-Rock is the next best thing. Bring a red headlamp to hike to the top of the summit for a great 360 view of the milky way.

Beautiful campground with sites surrounding Moss Lake and offering a spectacular view of Enchanted Rock. Don't forget to climb Turkey Peak, explore the caves and hike the trails around the base while visiting :)

Don't let first impressions fool you—E-rock doesn't look like much when you first see it from a distance—this hunk of granite does indeed live up to the park service's claim of being "Magical, Mystical, Enchanted." Complete with some very decent hiking trails, good rock climbing, and even a cave to explore, this camping destination provides plenty to do. If interested in the hike, I recommend a bottle of water per person and some good hiking shoes. I've seen more than one bloke attempt the steep incline in cowboy boots only to discover what it feels like to have mother nature knock you down a peg or two. The best time to hike is in the evening; sunset is truly breathtaking from the top. Take some wine and a blanket and you'll quickly discover why this rock earned its enchanted title. The only caution is to beware of crowds on weekends. Visitors are a friendly bunch, but the aforementioned booted blokes can sometimes distract from the serene beauty of the environment. Additionally on crowded holiday weekends, the park can reach capacity by mid day and you might be turned away. However if you're already camping in the park, then you won't have to worry about this. Every Texan and Texas visitor should make Enchanted Rock a priority. You won't be able to visit just once.

Going up the side of the rock will always get your hear pumping. But if you bring your head lamp and ask around, you can enter the cave and go through the center of the rock straight to the top.
