Down Horn Ranch Camping 1
As soon as we booked we called to find out if someone would be there to guide us to the camp we rented. Nobody answered. We drove 4.5 hours with no reply. We got there at 10pm so it was dark and no signs were out so we we're literally left in the dark. We just drove until we found a spot suitable and parked. The rest of the visit was fine but apparently they don't like talking to people.

We had a fantastic stay at Down Horn Ranch near Llano! We stayed in **Site 3**, which was very secluded and shaded. The sites are VERY well spaced out, so even if every site were full, you’d still feel like you had the place to yourself.
The longhorns were the highlight! We woke up in our Tesla Model Y AWD with massive longhorns hanging out right outside the car. We also saw deer and bunnies. It was such a cool Hill Country experience!
We were primitive camping in our Tesla, and the location was perfect. Llano is only about 10 minutes away and has a Supercharger. We charged to 80% before arriving, ran the AC for about 4 hours during the day and kept it at 60° all night, and still had about **55% battery in the morning** to make it back to the charger and continue our trip.
Site 3 was easy to reach in our AWD Tesla. There are gravel and dirt roads with some ruts, but nothing difficult when dry. I wouldn’t recommend a low 2WD vehicle for Sites 4–6 due to a small creek crossing and a fairly steep dirt hill. A 2WD truck or higher-clearance SUV should be fine.
We were unfortunately under a fire ban, so no campfire, but the **stars were incredible**! Super dark, peaceful, and quiet.
Overall, a fantastic place to stop, relax, see wildlife, and enjoy the Hill Country. We’d definitely stay again!
I took my girlfriend here who had never been camping before and she loved it. We got to tent camp next to the creek and watch the stars on the roof of my 4Runner, which made for a safe and fun experience.
The shower came in clutch, since we wanted to go to Mass on Sunday and both got to drive up to the building and freshen up really well before Church.
The location is really perfect too because we were only 30 minutes from Enchanted Rock, Fredericksburg and plenty of places to get food and find a Catholic Church with a morning mass we could make.

Beautiful property with many wildflowers and a short drive to llano. Campsites were well maintained and spread out providing good privacy. Would definitely recommend and go back.

Loved the cozy tent site I stayed at and the property was beautiful!
The place was awesome. Longhorns were huge
and very nimble roaming through camp didn’t even snag any tent lines! Bathroom was great and property was easy to access. Huge campsites RV part looked nice as well. Easy access to all the state parks and attractions.

We did not enjoy our stay very much, but it was mostly my own fault. I did not take note that the lovely private sites were just for tents. The RV options are out in the hot sun and just a handful of sites in a row with no privacy. Very, very hot! No shade.

I had the most enjoyable time camping here! What a beautiful ranch. Peaceful, quiet, natural. Loved it, I will be back.
We had a great time camping here. We were the only people on the entire property, so we had our run of the place. We actually ended up picking site #1 instead of #3. (The photo is of site #1).
The property is big enough that even if all 6 sites were fully rented out, you would have complete privacy in whichever site you use. There's a bathroom & shower on the property which was nice & clean.
It's a dirt road to sites 2-6, and I think for sites 4-6 you may be better off with a higher clearance vehicle and/or 4WD. You might be OK without it, but I'd say it's borderline through one little spot after site 3 where you cross a very small creek then drive up a hill.
Overall this is a great property and I highly recommend it.

Don’s place was serene. Lots of privacy, nice designated tent spots that felt very taken care of, while still keeping a sense of camping out in the natural space of that area. All the amenities you need and communicative as well.

Had a great short tent camping trip at Downhorn Ranch! The sites were nice and private, really appreciated having a bathroom complete with shower, and observing the curious Longhorns made for extra entertainment. The host was quick to respond with any questions we had and we would absolutely come back for more nights under the stars.

Great ranch in the hill country! We tent camped and enjoyed the secluded feel. Beautiful property and nice bath house. Enjoyed hearing all the animals around and seeing the longhorn. Would stay here again!
This was a great spot to stay! Nice to be in some nature and see some stars! The bathroom was a much appreciated addition!
We can't wait to visit again soon! The longhorns were so much fun to see. You can see where the ranch gets its name! Definitely one of our top hipcamp spots!

My family and I enjoyed tent camping on Dons land. The directions were spot on, close to Llano and Enchanted rock. The longhorns were beautiful to look at. Don was prompt at answering all my questions. The bathroom was very clean and nice.
Very beautiful, quiet place place to spend the night. Highly recommend.

Don welcomed us to the property and let us know what amenities were available to us which was nice. The ranch is situated in a perfect spot between Burnet and Llano but far enough to where you can get some peace and quiet. The layout of the ranch is great. A couple of cabins separated by a decent amount of space from the 6 RV sites. The sites are well laid out with enough space where you don’t feel you’re on top of each other. The sites have full hookups with 30 & 50A service as well as some extra 110V outlets. Each site also has water and sewer service as well as fire pits although we didn’t get a chance to use them this time. There’s a little creek that had running water which was nice. It was pretty cool to be among their longhorns. I was even able to get some nice pictures because they came up so close to us. We really liked the open space and even though it was hot having a little breeze helped keep temps manageable. Overall I would highly recommend and we hope to come back when the temps drop.
We have family in Llano so we wanted to stay nearby and my wife and I always camp on our road trips. This was a perfect find because it is inexpensive but also has bathroom and showers which are necessities when camping in TX. Here is my review:
1. Finding the ranch: it's fairly easy to find as it is the last drive on the left of the road. However, Google maps marks it incorrectly so just ignore where the map tells you to stop and continue to the end of the road. The gate is well marked and easy to find.
2. The layout: the first spot you enter is a pasture area with a couple of cabins and the bathroom/shower. The road is well worn so you don't need to worry about whether or not you are on the right track. Once you continue through the first area you will come to the RV hookups. They are also well marked and laid out. If you continue to follow the road it will take you back to the dispersed camping sites. Each one is clearly marked and pretty easy to find. They are very well spread out so even if all of them are full you won't see another group from your campsite. We reserved number 2 but since no one else was in the campground we were allowed to select a spot. We took site #3.
3. The location: it takes between 10 and 15 minutes to get to Llano from camp so you are close enough to get to town quickly, but far enough that you see no city lights. We have T-Mobile phone service and there is absolutely no service anywhere near the ranch. I do not know about other providers.
Don's property is a great getaway. I was only able to book for a night, but had a great time exploring the land and the small creeks. It's a very short drive to llano, but still feels very remote. Facilities are nice. We'll definitely book again!

We had a great time camping at Down Horn Ranch! The ranch is a beautiful spot and we enjoyed seeing the longhorns. The bathroom was clean and we were grateful for the hot shower after a long day hiking at one of the nearby state parks! The campsite was private and we made great use of the fire pit. The host was responsive and made sure we had everything we needed. I would reccomend this as a peaceful camping getaway for anyone looking for a spot in this area!

Everything about the Down Horn Ranch is exceptional.....the property is beautiful, the owners Don and Kathy are wonderful hosts, and the longhorns are a real treat to watch as they wander throughout the ranch. Loved the full hookups at the RV sites and the hiking trail full of all the beautiful flowers! We stayed 7 nights during the eclipse week and one night we were treated to a real Texas BBQ and bonfire. The ranch is 10 minutes from Llano and within day trips of San Saba, Marble Falls, and Fredericksburg-all fun towns. This was our first time in the hill country and we will definitely make a point of returning and staying at the Down Horn Ranch. I knew it was going to be a special place when we drove in the gate and were welcomed by Don and 7 big, beautiful longhorns!

This place is fantastic. Don and Cathy were very friendly and hospitable. Each campsite has lots of space and privacy from other campers. The Texas hill country is beautiful. First time for me. And the longhorns on the property are a great touch! If you’re in the area, I highly recommend staying here.
The property is beautiful! Trees, wild flowers, a winding creek, 100 acres well tended to where it counts the most & the rest is wild Texas with plenty to explore, watch wildlife, discover rocks, & more. Tent sites are large & spaced out wonderfully offering privacy or socializing which ever you prefer! Fire pit is an ideal size for ambience, warmth, & cooking. The 3/4 BATHHOUSE IS A TREASURE! Spic & span, hot water, private, spacious, plenty of hooks for hanging your clean-up possibles. Our gracious host & hostess were sincere, attentive, & generous but by no means intrusive. I feel like I have my foot in the door to a private club or at least an extended family member! I think I have now recommended The Down Horn Ranch to everyone & will make the 18 hour drive to visit again!

Thank you both very much for providing some awesome camping space. We had an amazing time out there on the ranch. The property was so beautiful, the woods were a joy to drive around in and seeing the longhorns roaming around nearby one afternoon was an amazing treat. I'm also incredibly grateful for the shower y'all provide! Sorry we couldn't make it to the bonfire on Sunday night - we lost track of time back at our campsite. It was just a really beautiful place to stay and I'm very thankful to have been able to spend my time in the Llano area for the eclipse here at the ranch,
The absolutely best camp site on the planet. What a big statement. I know. But it’s true! Wow wow wow. Free roaming long horn family adds to the character. The people camping were amazing. The owners are so sweet. Great great humans. This is it.
This has been the best Hipcamp experience I’ve ever had. Came out for the total eclipse and met some amazing people. Kathy and Don are as real as they get. Kind souls who want to share their piece of heaven with others. The primitive campsites are all secluded but close enough to walk to the main areas and if you have an RV you’ll be right there with the longhorns.
Do yourself a favor and stay on this land, whether it’s a ground tent or an RV these folks are the most welcoming people around. I’ll be back again!

We loved our weekend! Our space was more than ample for a huge tent and all of our stuff. It was nice because the tent sites are well separated from each other so you sort of feel like you are camping alone. The Longhorns that wander through made it even more fun! I would definitely stay again.
