The property is very secluded, but only 2 hrs from D. C. and Baltimore. The space can accommodate 5 tents comfortably or a few small campers (w/o hookups). Please note- I only book one group at a time. You'll have plenty of privacy! Spend your day bird watching on the river deck, put up your hammock and chill, go hiking or mountain biking at Cacapon State Park, take the kayaks out and paddle around, go fishing, or take a float trip. I can provide info on put in/take out spots depending on how long you'd like to float. I have 3 kayaks available for your use, or BYO if you'd like to venture further outside of the property lines. There is one big fire ring for cooking and/or bonfires, along with a large stationary stand up charcoal camp grill. There is also a small communal shed down at camp that contains extra camping supplies, etc.. feel free to use use and put back and or contribute to it! :) This spot is close by to Berkeley Springs, Paw Paw Tunnel, Cacapon State Park, and other nature preserves. More hiking, biking, restaurants, spas, antiquing- all within a beautiful 20 minute drive if you wish to venture out. There is a cabin on the property. I will more often be home than not, I will communicate with you about that around your stay. Sometimes I"ll come down to the river frontage if I drop in for a float .Also, we all get around on four wheelers and UTV's. So you will hear them from time to time. If I am home, please feel free to come up if you have any concerns/questions or to say hi! :) *Please note, you can normally get to this site without a 4 wheel drive vehicle. However, when the river is high it will sometimes flood the low water bridge where it crosses the Cacapon. If this is the case during your stay, I will provide all necessary information regarding projected river levels and directions. I will also offer a full refund if the bridge is impassable. The rich history of Burnhead Grazings is enveloped in a love for God's creation. Dr. Gib and Emmy Lou McLaughlin purchased Burnhead, which is Gaelic for the head of the stream, from William H. Stevens. The once pasture for Hilltop Dairy's cows became a pasture for sheep. Gib and Emmy had been in search of land for years after getting their first border collie and falling in love with the Shepherd lifestyle. Gib trained dozens of border collies to work the sheep and did hundreds of demonstrations highlighting the herding abilities of the collie across the country. Their love for Scotland and the border collie took them Scotland on many occasions. Burnhead Grazings is a snapshot of Scotland, "in bye" or close to, the beautiful college town of Indiana, PA. Less than two miles from two hotels, three miles from downtown, and within minutes from Amish country, it is amazing that this respite still exists so close to civilization. Gib and Emmy's daughter, Moire McLaughlin Bridges and her husband Randy have endeavored to bring the sheep back to Burnhead Grazings and to continue the family tradition as well as to share in the experience. You can listen to an interview on The Christian Witness Program on this page for some history about Moire and Randy in Tennessee where they were residing before coming to Indiana. They are producing lamb, wool for spinning and felting, and hay and are opening up the farm for small events such as weddings or family reunions. Moire is also the author and illustrator of a children's book available for sale on iBooks called Sissy & The King. In November of 2014, with the help of Hilltop Baptist Church and many others, they began hosting an event, LIFE Nativity, the weekend before Thanksgiving, which benefits Life-Way Pregnancy Center. Moire is also a fine artist and gives classes on wool felting. Ask about signing up for a class or book a private felting party.

Learn more about this land: This wooded area is 5 miles away from the Ohiopyle State Park whitewater launch area and GAP bike trail. We are less than 9 miles from Frank Lloyd Wright's Classic Fallingwater and about 8 miles from Kentuck Knob one of the last resident homes he designed (both are open for tours). Fort Necessity National Battlefield is 5 miles away. There are numerous native trout streams in the area. Youghiogheny Reservoir is 7 miles away for fishing, boat rentals, and water-sports. The Fern House is the primary camp cabin on the property. Although if someone would want to park a "self contained" camper or small RV on the property we would permit the unit to occupy the area in front of the driveway just pass the entrance gate. It is not within the ferns and is next to the road. There is an electrical outlet available at this small RV or van camper site. We are "nice pet" friendly. Dogs should not be left in the cabin alone. We have a mountain spring (when the spring is running) up the trail road (450 feet away). The ferns will normally be in full glory by the end of May to mid September and are amazing, covering the forest floor. Deer, bear, wild turkey, fox, chipmunks, squirrels and many woodland birds abound the property especially owls. A picnic table, fire ring and firewood is available on the property. Free WiFi on the property as long as the plant life is not too thick! There is a mile hiking loop right on the property and many challenging trails in the area, including the starting point for the Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail. No smoking is permitted in the cabin. Read the entire narrative on the cabin (Tiny Fern House) before booking.

Weekend Trip to Hill House on Green Gate

When you think of “almost heaven-West Virginia”, little spots like this are what that tune is all about. Ken is a very friendly host, and the whole spot is set up for relaxation. You get a lovely view, complete with bird song and buzzing bees. Even the compost toilet is easy to understand thanks to thoughtful, thorough directions provided. I will absolutely be back and for a longer stay.

Weekend Trip to The Byrd's Nest on the River

We booked both of Kara's sites with friends and had a great time. The cabin is so cozy and comfortable with everything you need. The outdoor shower was awesome! There was easy lake access and plenty of kayaks to take out on the water. The view was beautiful. Kara was a great host, with clear directions on how to get there and gave detailed information on what is available at the site. We would definitely camp there again!

We stayed just overnight (a middle point between home and our final destination) but my husband and I both agreed that we would have loved to’ve stayed longer in this peaceful spot! We were mildly worried that it might be hot inside when we arrived (early evening) but it was perfect — and, as other reviewers have said, it made for really comfortable sleeping with the powerful fan and the breeze. We wish we’d had time to see the river. Maybe someday!

5 nights at Hill House on Green Gate

My best friend and I absolutely loved our stay here. We live about 12 hours apart now, so we were looking for somewhere roughly halfway between us where we could slow down, spend some much-needed time together, and not feel like either of us had made an enormous drive. This ended up being exactly what we needed. We usually tent camp, but for this trip we wanted to arrive somewhere without having to build our home for the week first. 😂 This gave us the best of both worlds: a cozy, peaceful place to settle in while still feeling tucked away in nature. The hosts were lovely and communication was wonderful. They showed us around, walked us through the composting toilet, and made sure we had everything we needed. The cooking appliances, refrigeration, and ceiling fan were all such appreciated amenities and made packing much easier. We spent time playing board games and working on craft projects, hiked in Shenandoah National Park, did a little antiquing, and still had plenty of time to simply enjoy the property and each other’s company. One of the absolute highlights was watching the lunar eclipse with virtually no light pollution. The sky was incredibly clear, and it became one of those moments we’ll remember for a long time. Between the view, the quiet, the thoughtful amenities, and how genuinely restful the stay felt, this place gave us exactly the time together we had been hoping for. We are already planning on coming back.

Staying at Pablo and Lorena's Invisible Love House was the highlight of my summer! My partner and I spent two nights here and left feeling rejuvenated and incredibly relaxed. Pablo was incredibly kind and dropped us off at a spot with kayaks to spend a few hours on the river. We were delayed in getting back (no service on the river meant that we couldn't message him and let him know) and he was there ready for us when we arrived. I appreciate the time he took out of his day to make sure we had the best stay possible. The cabin was cozy, clean, and had everything we could need! There was a huge thunderstorm one of the nights we were there and watching it from the inside of the cabin was so magical. I cannot recommend this place enough:)

We had a wonderful stay at the invisible house on Pablo and Lorena's property! It is secluded and serene but Pablo and Lorena always responded super quickly and were SO friendly and helpful whenever I had a question. You're set up on a hill a little ways back from their house, so you have plenty of privacy. We wound up spending a lot of time at the cabin just hanging out, having fires, lounging in the chairs on the back porch. The invisible house gets hot during the day in late July, but the large fan actually keeps it super cool at night and the beds are comfortable. I got some of the best sleep of my life here. The private river access is a few minute drive or 15-20 minute walk away and wow, it is beautiful there. Perfectly clear water, great for swimming and would be nice for kids as it doesn't get too deep until you're out quite a ways. Went fishing at the public river access up the way and caught several sunnies and smallmouth. Nearby Prospect Peak and the overlook in Cacapon state park are breathtaking. Tons of fun stuff to do in Berkeley Springs, Fairfax coffee house and the massive cat cafe absolutely rock. I can't say enough good things about this place and our hosts. If you're looking at this place thinking about booking, do it! You won't regret it.

Weekend Trip to Hill House on Green Gate

The whole experience was incredible. Ken is an amazing host, super responsive and kind! The little house on the hill is such a jewel! Not only it is located nested in a scenic valley, but it is flawlessly decorated! We loved the fusion of iron and nature, art and function all over the place. And then, there is the view... stunning mountainside, facing west from the porch. There is more tho, the surrounding land is weaved through to inviting paths, that just tease your feet to take a stroll and discover wonders, explore like a little child would, with wide eyes full of wonder and beauty at every turn. The place is is quiet and peaceful, the music from the honey bees on the lavender bushes in the front greets me for my cup of coffee in the morning. Thank you sharing your wonderful place!

Weekend Trip to Urban Saddle Ranch

My husband, myself and our golden retriever, Nala, had a wonderfully relaxing kid free weekend. Monique was quick to respond to any questions and met was very friendly and kind when we met her face to face. Urban Saddle Ranch had comfortable and clean cabins, adorable animals, and was well maintained. We loved listening to the water feature in the pond and the bullfrogs at night. We will be back!

We loved our stay at this farm . Kevin was an amazing host and you can see that as soon as you pull up on thr cabin as it was supper clean and he had everything you could need . I definitely recommend the honey bee experience what an amazing experience we will never forget ! Kevin was so informative, and now we have a new, profound respect and knowledge for bees 🐝 we will definitely book in the future.
