If the weather is better, and you want a more scenic way there with hiking -- take the 25 minute drive down to Lincoln and travel the amazing Kancamangus Scenic Byway (Route 112). This is 35 miles through the White Mountains with no gas stations, so you might want to top off while in Lincoln. Thirty minutes east is the Mount Washington Cog Railway, and you will pass the historic Mount Washington Hotel on the way. Fifteen minutes south and you can be at Franconia Notch State Park.

Streife translated from Norwegian means roam. The right to roam, also called the right of access, or everyman's right(“allemannsretten”) is a traditional right from ancient times, and since 1957 has also been a part of the Norwegian Outdoor Recreation Act. It ensures that everybody gets to experience nature, even on larger privately owned areas. In our travels to Norway, we learned of this law and loved the concept so much we brought it back with us to America. Yet we had no land to offer. So, we searched...and searched....and searched some more. Then we found what would become camp Streife. 20 acres of uncut timber growth forest, tucked in the hills of Rumford Maine. With a nearby brook, pond and within 20 minutes of some of our favorite ski locations it was just right. The rules of this law are simple. Be considerate and thoughtful. Don't damage nature and other surroundings. Leave the landscape as you would want to find it. Leave no trace. You may put up a tent, or sleep under the stars, for the night anywhere in the countryside, forests or mountains, as long as you keep at least 500 feet away from the nearest inhabited house or cabin. This rule of 500 feet distance also applies to camping cars and caravans. If you want to stay for more than two nights in the same place, you must ask the landowner's permission, except in the mountains or very remote areas. Well, we've taken care of all those Allemannsretten rules for you. We invite you to our small part of the world and encourage you to exercise your right to roam. You MUST bring a tent or RV for camping. Our campground is suitable for nature lovers or outdoor enthusiasts. We take incredible care of our land - it is not suitable for parties! PLEASE NOTE, we prefer arrivals before 9 pm, so please communicate what time you will be arriving with us beforehand :) We purchased this farm over a decade ago. About

Umbagog Lake State Park is situated at the southern end of Umbagog Lake, a large wilderness lake that straddles the New Hampshire-Maine state line not too far from the Canadian border. Umbagog means shallow water in the Abenaki language and the area is rich in Native history. Popular activities in the park include swimming, boating, fishing, and wildlife viewing in the summer and snowmobiling and snowshoeing in winter. Campers will find many options from RV-friendly sites with hookups to remote cabins and campsites only accessible by boat.

Tips for snagging a campsite

Campsite and cabin reservations can be made up to 11 months in advance online or over the phone.
Same-day reservations can only be made by calling the park directly.
Cabin rentals are only available for Monday through Thursday night and Friday night through Sunday night. Reservations can be combined for week-long stays.

When to go

Umbagog Lake State Park is open year-round, but campgrounds are only open from mid-May through early October. Paddling on the lake is best in the early morning before afternoon winds pick up. Mosquitoes and other biting flies can be troublesome in midsummer; come prepared with long pants and buy spray or avoid this season altogether. Fall, when waterfall migration season begins, is an especially pleasant time to visit. Fall colors tend to peak by late September.

Campsites are equipped with a fire ring and picnic table. The base park campground has 27 sites with electric and water hookups available.
The campground has flush toilets, coin-operated showers, and a camp store.
Canoe and kayak rentals are available as well as a paid boat shuttle to remote campsites and cabins.
Dogs are not permitted at beaches, in cabins, and at remote campsites.
