Carter's Cross Country Ski Center and Shop has been a family owned business since 1982. The land on which the trails have been built on has been in the Carter family since the late 1700's. The first Carter that came to Bethel was the first Doctor in the area that helped Mollyocket, a Native American medicine woman. All the different generations that came along after were either farmers or loggers or both. Carter's XC Ski Center is located on the banks of the Big Androscoggin River, and meanders through the Maine woods all the way up to Farwell Mountain, overlooking Sunday River Ski, the Presidential and Mahousic Mountain Ranges and Mt Washington. Nearby is Middle Intervale Farm, owned by John Carter, who produces his own milk, vegetables, and meat.  Guests can enjoy the property's views and amenities, such as hiking, kayaking, skiing, snowshoeing, biking, bird watching, and relaxing. Enjoy the peacefulness and tranquility of our cabin in the Maine woods.

Nature and relaxation at it's best
I'm torn because I want to show my support to Anne and the folks at Carter's cross country ski, but I don't want anybody to know about this beautiful little gem 😉 The cabin was well appointed, clean, and comfy. The scenery was wonderful and the hosts were great. Looking forward to coming back.

Absolutely perfect for anyone wanting to get away from it all. Quiet, homey, clean and warm. Everthing is well built and well kept. Kitchen has all you need and the wood stove heats the place nicely. Beautiful trails and great communication from the owners. My favorite stay on hipcamp so far.

Farwell Mountain Cabin
It was a great and cozy little cabin! I loved the off grid feel of it with all gas appliances and no electricity. The only thing i could say is that the mattresses were a little stiff, but literally nothing else to complain about. There were games and puzzles and overall the place was great!

Camp Fern
We are so happy Camp Fern was where we ended up this weekend. If you are looking for a place to just be you, this is the place to go. Remote, peaceful, and a place to experience the real beauty of Maine with amazing forested areas, views, and trails out your front door. Camp Fern is close enough to any town amenity if you get the itch to leave and check back in with the world. The owners pleasantly checked in, to ask if we needed anything and were kind and gracious with our time here. Authentic character Friendly atmosphere around town and where ever we found ourselves; either relaxing on the river for hours, popping into the gas station , or bowling . If you need to recenter this is the equator .

Clean, comfortable, and pleasant!
Camp fern was lovely! A great secluded location with access to the cross country trails, VERY well equipped with most things you might need, and well maintained. It was wonderful to sit on the second floor and look out the window and watch the sun set. The propane lights and gas stove were a nice extra to have too. We'll definitely be back.

Camp Fern
Spectacular cabin in the woods with access to hiking right out the door. The property is very private and feels remote yet is only a short drive to village of Bethel. Jes and Anne were great hosts, very accommodating and helpful with local recommendations. Would definitely recommend.

Camp Fern
Best winter cabin on Hipcamp
Camp Fern is spectacular, it’s much more than we expected. If you’re looking for an authentic cabin retreat Camp Fern definitely qualifies. For my group it’s exactly what we were looking for: ease of access to nice trails to hike and ski during the day, while providing rustic yet comfortable accommodation. The stove is strong and warms up the cabin quickly, and it’s well insulated so it stays warm all night. I can only imagine how perfect it is there when there’s actually more snow and all the trails are skiable! Also, Anne is a great host. We can’t get air to come back.

A quiet sanctuary
My husband and I had a great night at stonewall, the quiet, a slight drizzle, a fire, followed by a morning walk on the trails was absolute perfection.

Great shelter from the storm
A storm derailed our camping plans, and Anne's cabin was a great alternative! Very remote and sparse (but well-kept) amenities, plus a roof overhead to combat the rain. Screened windows gave a great cross-breeze in the hot summer. Comfortable outhouse, sink (without running water), gas-powered stove and lamps, full-size mattresses with sheets provided. Hoping to come back in the winter months!

Stonewall Cabin
This place was wonderful! Clean, cozy, smelled of cedar and gave you the feeling of being a million miles from civilization without a bad drive! Anne gave great directions in. Sadly we were only able to stay one night so we didn't get to explore the property much. There are gas lights inside and the stove works perfectly, easy to cook on and plenty of dishes and cooking pans at the cabin. Outhouse does have a giant wasps nest in it - but it's abandoned. Still a bit freaky though! Would definitely recommend this cabin for any and all outdoor fun :)

Stonewall Cabin
We stayed one night at Stonewall Cabin and we loved it! Easy to find, and it's a very quick cross country ski or snowshoe in from the parking lot (fine by me after a skiing for a few hours in the morning). We enjoyed a cozy night playing games by the wood burning stove in the glow of the three propane lights and a few candles. The beds were comfortable and the kitchen had all of the cooking ware one could need. Great spot!

Ski in to a cozy cabin
Great spot nestled on ski trails on the side of a mountain. Very private, would recommend 4 wheel drive if the conditions are snowy or icy. Don had started the woodstove and brought in water for our arrival, we enjoyed a sunset ski and woke up to snow falling. Spacious cabin with kitchen essentials (including a gas stove and oven!) Our dog loved running around and we loved having the fresh snow all to ourselves. We were just two people, but this would be a great spot for two couples with kids because of the lofts.

Lovely winter stay
Cabin was as described and pictured. It was easy to keep warm with the wood stove and having the stove made cooking simple. The sleeping area was comfortable and slept four easily. The area was beautiful and felt private even though it wasn’t a long drive to reach the main lodge building. We didn’t luck out on our November weekend with the trails ready for skiing yet, but a snowshoe hike was a nice way to see the trail system and we look forward to trying skis on the trails in future. Don and Anne were kind and helpful. We would happily stay again!

We had a wonderful time at Camp Fern (Stonewall Cabin). The view from upstairs was great, the fireplace was warm, and the woods were peaceful. I especially liked having so many trails surrounding the cabin without having to drive anywhere. There were plenty of beds upstairs and a larger eating area downstairs which would be ideal for a larger group looking to get away.

Super cozy and great.
The Cabin was amazinggggg. So cozy. Wood stove keeps you very warm (we were here in late October so was necessary haha). Waking up to the view of the mountains in the morning was phenomenal. Feels super secluded while still being only about 10 minutes outside of town and a short drive from White Mountains National Forest for a TON of hiking adventures. Anne the host is so nice, she is just the best. Stars, so many, saw three shooting stars in about 15 minutes. 10/10 would recommend!
