Take your canine pal with you! Quiet hours: dusk to 7am. Also consider your dog's inclination for barking. We keep the peace and quiet of all of our guests in mind.
*DRAGON LOFT has one double bed in a loft with steep ladder. Great for two people. Room for dog bed or kennel below the loft. Many folks that have visited our place refer to it as 'country living in the city'.
We are so blessed to live in this little piece of serenity just inside the city limits of Duluth.
Our home was once an abandoned house that sat for years until a friend mentioned to us that it might be going up for sale. We loved the location and rolled up our sleeves. Twenty years later we still marvel at the beauty around us and can hardly believe that we LIVE here!
Just down the road is a trout stream and beyond that was a popular farm that attracted many folks to this neighborhood for hay rides and sleigh rides. The farm has since retired its horses and closed its doors to make room for new homes, but memories live on in the beauty of the open fields. I often imagine the sound of horses and sleigh bells and people singing carols and then warming up around a toasty fire sipping hot cocoa. Some of those memories live on right here at Balsam Ridge (minus the horses). Over the years many groups of folks have enjoyed a sense of community in these back woods no matter the season. Campfires, kids catching frogs, neighborhood campouts, snow picnics, hair-raising toboggan runs, family campouts, spiritual silent retreats, a take-your-breath-away giant swing, and some tales too daring to mention are all part of the fun.
This is why we do what we do. We've been given much, and love to give back. It just wouldn't seem right to keep all this good to ourselves.

Our yurt sits on the edge of a wild woods on the banks of the Cloquet River overlooking a meadow that is an active forest restoration project currently in process. From your door, you can access a loop of trails that wind through the woods, to the river and back to the yurt.
Get back to basics. There is no electricity or running water in the yurt. Camp lanterns and solar lights are provided as is refillable fresh water and a propane camp stove/oven with pots/pans/utensils. The yurt is heated solely by a wood stove and there is plenty of firewood a short distance away with a sled or wagon to use for hauling. A campfire pit is just outside the yurt with a hanging grill and grilling tools. A detached outhouse is a short walk from the yurt and is for your use alone when you're here. In the winter, a Luggable Loo is available to bring to the yurt to eliminate trips at night in the cold to the outhouse. The yurt contains a queen bed with linens and a single camp cot available on request.
Dogs are welcome in the yurt! We charge a $25 pet fee per reservation. If you'd like to bring a dog or dogs (limit 2), please add the Pet Fee which is listed as an extra during the booking process.
In the warm months, the river is great for swimming and fishing.
(And Coming Soon: Kayaks, river tubes, and canoe availability pending the sorting of proper insurance.)
In the winter, two pairs of snowshoes are included for quiet walks through the woods.
*Note: Train sounds and some road noise can be heard from the yurt.
The train has been described as "quite loud" by some guests and as sounding "off in the distance" and "pleasant" by others. The crossing is a half mile away. If you're sensitive to sounds, a light sleeper, or looking for complete and utter quiet, please take this into account. Ear plugs are also available in the yurt.

About this space
The "Kick Back Tiny Shack" has a queen size bed, small futon bed (for a child) along with two single camp cots. This tiny house can sleep up to four people (2-3 most comfortably) depending on your needs. There is a mini fridge with mini freezer along with a mini gas range/oven, microwave, coffee pot and toaster. There is a TV and Wi-Fi. The cabin has a freestanding gas fireplace to keep you cozy and warm and air conditioning for the hot summer months. Come prepared to relax. This is a rustic cabin with all amenities so no need to pack up dishes, bedding, towels, etc. (bring sleeping bag and pillow for anything other than the queen size bed.) The kitchen is fully stocked with your basic cooking and dining essentials. If you don't want to do dishes you are welcome to bring your own paper plates, etc. Coffee, Salt, pepper, cooking spray, dish soap and hand soap, toilet paper and one roll of paper towels provided. There is not a well or city water, but you will be supplied with an electric pump faucet with 10 gallons of water for the kitchen sink for doing dishes, etc. There is also a pump faucet for the outhouse sink. You can heat water on the stove with the pot supplied. In addition, 1 to 2 gallons of drinking water will be supplied depending on the length of your stay. There is a heated outhouse next to the cabin which has a shower stall in which you can shower with 120 gallons of water and on demand water heater. Towels are provided and if you need more water, you can contact us, and we can refill at our home which is located next door. Please allow notice in case we are not home at the time. The contact information will be provided with your booking confirmation. You have your own private yard on our 6 acres with a BBQ pit in the summer months, firepit and grill off of the back deck year-round. If you chose to bring a four-wheeler, canoe, boat or snowmobile there is plenty of parking space depending on the quantity. Snowmobiles and side by sides are available for rent 3 miles up the road from the cabin. Come and unwind or explore the many wonders that the Northwoods has to offer! The interior of the cabin is newly refinished. The exterior will be improved as time goes by. No unauthorized guests or pets as a fee may be added and Airbnb does not cover this.

This is my little slice of heaven, and I’d love to share it with like-minded folks who appreciate nature as much as I do. I bought this property less than a year ago, and I’m already in love with it.
The mature cedar and birch trees are my favorite part of the property, but the young maples are beautiful too. If you’ve ever wanted to experience absolute silence, this is your chance. There’s a lake about a mile down the gravel road, and you can occasionally hear loons, which makes me so happy! You’ll also frequently hear owls in the evening and at night.
There is a gun range down the road, so you may occasionally hear gunshots in the distance, but at least there are no police sirens. 😉
There’s a fairly steep hill leading down to the cabin, but you can drive all the way down. A couple of walking trails have already been made throughout the property, with more in the works.
This is a great location for enjoying all the incredible nature northern Wisconsin has to offer.

• No bedding is provided. Please bring your own sleeping bags, blankets, pillows, and linens.
• Only a teapot is provided.
• No cookware or dishes are provided. Please bring everything you'll need for cooking, eating, and drinking.
• Solar lights are provided, but we recommend bringing headlamps or flashlights for nighttime use.
Cooking
• We encourage outdoor cooking over the fire using the provided grill grate.
• The propane stove is intended for light cooking and boiling water.
• Never leave the stove unattended while it's in use.
• Keep flammable items away from the stove.
• Open a window or crack the door slightly while cooking for ventilation.
• After each use, make sure both the stove and the propane tank located outside the yurt are completely turned off.
• Never use the stove to heat the yurt.
Water
• Bring your own drinking water.
• Empty water jugs and a water crock are provided.
• A low-pressure artesian well is available at the canoe landing within walking distance of the yurt.
• A map showing nearby artesian water sources is available if you need additional drinking water.
Before You Arrive
This is an off-grid camping experience with:
• No electricity
• No running water
• A pit toilet on-site
Additional pit toilets and an artesian well are available at the nearby boat launch.
Campfires
• Firewood is not provided at this time.
• Please purchase firewood locally if you plan to have a campfire.
• You're also welcome to use dead, cleared brush found on the property.
Pets
• Dogs are welcome!
• Please do not leave your dog(s) unattended in the yurt, as this can cause damage and unnecessary stress for your pet.
Tick Safety
Ticks are common in northern Wisconsin, especially during the warmer months.
• Bring tick repellent.
• Tuck your pants into your socks while hiking.
• Perform a thorough tick check after spending time outdoors.
Before You Check Out
To help us keep our nightly rates low by avoiding cleaning fees, please:
• Sweep the floors.
• Wipe down all surfaces, including the mattress cover if needed.
• Use the Swiffer on the floors.
• Lint-roll the futon if necessary.
• Shake out the rugs outside.
• Place all trash in the dumpster.

Our family loved our stay in the Gokotta tent! We just wanted a few days away unplug and to end the summer and was exactly what we needed! We wanted to camp but didn’t want all the work with setting up a tent etc so this was perfect. So many cozy touches at our site and around the whole area. It’s not as remote as the pictures show - just a large beautiful property that has some trails, so grocery store etc conveniently close by if needed. We went up to Two Harbors for a day which was about an hour drive. Our boys seemed to just want to go back to the “glamp” site though. Lol. Our boys are 10, 14 and 16 and all loved it. We enjoyed playing the homemade carpet ball game on site as a family (got pretty competitive), the swings, and just sitting by the campfire. We played cards one night in a cute building down by the little pond. Everything there had so much character and thought put into it. Even the outhouses were cute and had working light switches.
Linda and Chris were the sweetest people and genuinely wanted us to have the best stay. Will definitely go back! We loved Gokotta because was more private at the far end of the property and worked great for our family!

Very clean and private area. The sauna was a very nice facet of “after hike” care after jay Cooke hiking as well. When we went their pond was a little low but if you’re a volleyball fan or Gaga ball then they’ve got things for you. Would go back again for sure.

Unless you have stayed at Balsam Ridge before, you simply don't truly know what to expect when you arrive. Pictures, descriptions & reviews from others simply don't do justice for what you truly experience. Balsam Ridge is a place you have to spend time at yourself to fully take in and understand why this place is so highly reccommended, loved and appreciated by so many people. Once you enter the site, you completely forget you are actually still withing the limits of the city because it feels like true country! The peace, tranquility, & comfort it brings it like no other place I've ever been. Chris and Linda go above and beyond to make sure you are comfortable during your stay and take care of you as if you are "home". They sincerely care about their guest and value them and their feedback and always make themselves available at all times. If you are ever in neen of a place to stay while in Duluth - I promise you - Balsam Ridge would not disapoint you!

2 nights at Balsam Ridge Retreat
I simply adore Balsam Ridge! This was my third visit (first in Danny’s tent) and we had a wonderful time tucked back in the trees. Chris & Linda are wonderful hosts- they truly go above and beyond with their caretaking of the property and are very responsive when questions arise. This is my favorite retreat from the cities and I can’t recommend it enough to all my friends and family.

The mini coop is a great place to stay! It may be SMALL but it’s a perfect spot for two people! There is also a lot of privacy from the other sites that are on the property. The owners are also super kind and helpful! Highly recommend!

Weekend Trip to Balsam Ridge Retreat
Staying at the Roost was awesome! Linda and Chris welcomed us as we arrived, gave a tour of the property, and gave great ideas on throngs or places to experience. The Roost is definitely small, so be prepared for that. That being said, we had a fantastic time at the Roost. It’s a quick drive to Duluth and a great place to recover in a quiet area after a long day out! Thanks for a great weekend!

This site was beautiful and tranquil. There is a creek full of life and a gorgeous wildflower meadow. Charming sounds of frogs and birds can be heard. Very relaxing and pleasant.

River Inn Campground is often times really noisy, so if you're looking for a more secluded experience, look for a backcountry site. They are only 1/4 mile away!

This state park is beautiful with the roaring St. Louis river...the campgrounds are pretty wooded and suggest some bug spray! But for being so close to Duluth, it sure seems pretty secluded still! Great family camping!
