I purchased this property in 2016 from the estate of Robert Masters. Mr. Master's and his family lived on this property since 1957 in the small red brick house at the road, Green Shutters Cottage, an Airbnb/VRBO. He raised chickens and cattle. The cows are the reason this property looks the way it does with it's magnificent trees. I suspect this piece of property has had cattle on it for 100+ years. Mr. Masters worked at the Historic Habersham Mill down the road as did many of the locals. I have named the farm, Sole Farm. (Sole is Italian for Sun) The house on the hill, my home, is the Villa del Sole. I look forward to having you come and enjoy this beautiful piece of land I call home. Learn more about this land: COVID-19: None of the camp sites are even in sight of one another. The sights are large enough so that you and your fellow campers can social distance from one another. I certainly respect your wishes and will social distance while packing you into your site with the tractor.  You will pull into 495 Habersham Mill Rd, Green Shutter Cottage. There is a gravel drive that goes down behind Green Shutters Cottage. There is a Hip Camp sign pointing the way. I will pick you up there with the tractor to pack you in and I will pack you out as well. Vehicles are NOT allowed on the property. You WILL get stuck. Please be courteous and respect my time and let me know when you are going to arrive so that I can be available to assist you. A breathtaking view of the distant mountains greets you as you come on to the property as well as the majestic Villa del Sole, a Tuscan style villa on top of the hill, my home. The land drops away into rolling pastures dotted with ancient trees, some 300+!. The woodlands are filled with wildlife that surround the property where you are completely isolated from the world. There are two creeks that border each side of the property and join together and flow into Lake Habersham then into the Soque, the top trophy trout stream in the southeast. The water in these streams is pure. Please respect this and bring Earth friendly soap for washing dishes. I recommend Dr. Bonner's Pure castile soap. There is a creek by each camp site. The Woodland sites and the Meadow both have streams, fire pits, benches and latrines. I will pack you into and out of your site with the tractor. I do not allow vehicles on the property. You can walked to the sites if you like. I do welcome well behaved dogs. I have two that live here with me, Buster and Rufus. They will probably come pay a visit at some point.  Depending on where you want to camp there are three possible campsites to choose from: The Meadow, 2 to 24 campers and, The Woodland site, 2 to 8, The Head Waters, 2 to 6 campers.  The Head Waters site is down next to the creek and next to a meadow, very secluded, no latrine. The Meadow is best for larger groups of 8 or more. It is is a medium size meadow with flat ground suitable for spacing a number of tents out. There is a fire pit, grill/grate and three benches. It also has a creek and a latrine. The Woodland site is suitable for 2 to 8 campers but is a bit limited on places to pitch tents. It too has a fire pit, grill/grate, benches, and a latrine. It is by far the prettiest site. It's possible to sit in the creek in areas during hot weather(shallow water and COLD!. You are not completely disconnected from the world here(WIFI) but far enough away to feel isolated and private. In the bottoms, you are nestled in the woods and can see nothing around you but forest, not even the Villa and not the other campers in the meadow. You see no neighbors, houses, lights, etc. Stargazing from on top of the hill is not to be missed. I recommend Sky Watch app. Clarkesville is close by. Ingles is close by for forgotten supplies or a Starbucks fix. Yonah Cafe is great for breakfast and specialty coffees This is a small town, rural area, quiet and slow. There is plenty more to do if you just want Sole Farm camp as a base. Tallulah Gorge is 20 minutes to the north and hiking at Panther Creek.  Alpine Helen is a 20 minute drive Many good hiking opps are close by, waterfalls, thrifting. The Chattahoochee is good for canoeing, kayaking and swimming. There are several stables that offer trail rides close by. You are allowed to walk all over the property using the mown paths but please respect the other campers and my privacy. I will be respecting yours.

Hello Campers, We are a 125 acre property that has 36 holes of championship disc golf. The North Oconee River runs through our property as well as three ponds throughout. We have plenty of room to pitch your tents. It really depends on how far you would like to be from the bathhouse. We are 6 miles from Lake Lanier and the Chattahooce River, and a short drive to hiking/mountain biking trail heads. We have a wonderful bathhouse with restrooms, showers and laundry just a very short walk from our sites (maintained by the staff at the park). We're also pet-friendly and love our furry campers! Come join us at this unforgettable camping spot at Historic Castleberry Bridge where the Gold Rush happened, the Indian fish trap still exist, the birth place of Denver Colorado and the hideout of Jesse James just some of the history that happened at your campsite on the Etowah River. If you're feeling extra adventurous, there are rope swings that let you swing over the river, and there are super cool places to splash around and swim, part of which, is in the Indian Fish Trap. When your tummy starts rumbling, don't worry. We've got you covered with grills in the community area where you can cook delicious food. So you can have a tasty meal with the sound of the river flowing in the background. Also we are within 5-10 minutes to stores, restaurant , etc. But wait, there's more excitement! If you're looking for an even bigger adventure, this is the perfect spot to begin an awesome kayaking trip if you brought your kayak. It is located between campsites 3 and 4. Within a couple miles of our property there is mountain biking, hiking, lake access of swimming and boating. Bring your kayak to enjoy seeing Lake Nottely! We live on the property, and it is a working homestead. We have chickens (roosters crowing too, sometimes in early hours - sorry about that). We ask that you keep your dogs *at your camp site at all times* (we have had camper's dogs run through the field at us and scare us to pieces and we'd rather not experience that again! lol) Enjoy the sounds of the creek and put your tent on level land. Castleberry Bridge has become our go to spot for our annual camping trip, and it truly is a hidden gem! We spent amazing days swimming, tubing, fishing, relaxing by the fire, and just enjoying being together. The hosts are absolutely wonderful, friendly, accommodating, and always making sure everyone has what they need. Free firewood, daily trash pickup, and honestly some of the cleanest campsite bathrooms we’ve ever seen. It’s incredibly family friendly, and we especially love that the dogs can be off leash and enjoy the trip right along with us. 🐾 Our pups give it two paws up\! Another amazing trip in the books. We’ll definitely be back next year!

2 nights at Castleberry Bridge

George & Gini's site was so nice for a small getaway + they are amazing hosts. They helped us out with some small accomodations with a friendly attitude + no issue. You can tell just how much love, pride, and work the 2 of them have put towards this place. George is so friendly & we chatted with him a bunch about local history, things to do, some shared interests, etc. Gini was also a doll when it came to questions we had & some technical stuff with our booking. The camp sites are a bit close to some other sites and the "road" through their land is more on the narrow side so I probably wouldnt recommend bringing/driving a pickup truck but our SUV had 0 issues navigating back + forth. There's a cute little butterfly farm about 5 min down the road that I totally recommend checking out. My only other suggestion would to definitely bring flashlights as once the sun goes down, it is a bit hard to see while walking. We will most certainly be back next time we camp in GA!! Thank you again so much to George + Gini :)

The view was spectacular. The pictures don’t give it justice. The cabin I was in had a map of the area, Ga and Tn. It was just the right size for my dogs and I and the bed was very comfortable. I believe it was a tin roof and it rained that night. The sound was beautiful to me, not so good to my dog. The people were extra friendly. I felt very secure. I received a flash flood warning and was very concerned but heard the cart driving by ever so often. I had my dogs with me and I believe the camp dog came and took my dog on a walk😂😂. It was the cutest thing. I purchased so many mosquito items and never had to use them. I had to leave earlier than I wanted because my dog was so stressed and he is an elder dog. One last thing I don’t know what the heck I was thinking but driving up the mountain was extra scary for me. I was panicked about having to drive down. Guess what? There is a service for that. I wish I had known before coming. It’s called Stat Ride. I absolutely loved everything about this resort.

This was our first camping trip as a family, and George was incredibly hospitable and attentive. His helpful advice made our experience much easier. We ended up staying at campsite #1/2, which offered a great view and was conveniently located near the river. We had a fantastic time and highly recommend staying at this campground.

This was a wonderful campsite! It was right on Brasstown Creek (running from nearby mountain peak - Brasstown Bald), with easy access to the creek via a short set of stairs. Laying in the middle of the rushing creek was the ultimate comfort in mid-July. The campsites were well put together, and June (our host) was very kind and accommodating. There is a tubing company (West Tubing) which operates on that creek, also run by the host. The campsites are secluded from each other and feature a beautiful view of the creek below, and plenty of shade from the trees around. We also enjoyed stopping by nearby Cupid Falls in Young Harris, GA - about a 15 minute drive away. Brasstown Bald offers a beautiful drive/hike to Georgia’s highest mountain summit, and is only about 40 minutes away. We only had the opportunity to eat at one local restaurant, but Young Harris Wings was absolutely terrific as well. There is a dollar general grocery about 5 minutes away, as well as a convenience store - gas is a little bit further out of town. The turn off of the road was slightly different than the GPS told - it is to the right side, and look for the sign with the Hipcamp logo next to a gate (also a sign saying “West Tubing Co”). I reached out for help finding it, and they called right away. We stayed for 4 nights, and I would certainly camp here again!

I can’t recommend Mr. Gary’s site enough! My boyfriend and I had such a lovely time, and he was a gracious host. This was our first time glamping (we normally camp primitive), and it felt like absolute luxury. The bed was comfortable, there was plenty of seating, and the access to electricity was a huge plus. The sound of the bubbling brook beside the camp was so nice to fall asleep to. The location is great because it is peaceful and secluded, but it’s also 10 minutes away from the Main Street of Helen. It’s an ideal location if you want to enjoy the quiet and relax in nature while still having the option to easily participate in civilization. It rained intermittently during our stay, but it did not affect the fun we had one bit. We stayed cozy and clean, especially with access to a hot shower! We did have to fight the mosquitos a bit due to the humid, rainy weather, which would have been no issue if we hadn’t forgotten to pack bug spray. So just remember to pack your bug spray and you will be all right! And don’t sleep on the breakfast menu and other fun packages the host offers. Breakfast was incredible and definitely made with love. It really added to the experience and made our anniversary trip even more special. We can’t wait to come back again! Thank you for such a wonderful experience.

Great site- lots to do there- wish we could have stayed longer. You can tell the hosts have thought of everything- high chairs built into picnic tables, hook and ring games and firewood all set up. The hosts were very communicative and helpful.

What doesn’t Smithgall Woods State Park have? Well, we can’t think of much, so let’s just stick with what this nature lover’s paradise does have. Dukes Creek is one of north Georgia’s favorite trout streams, and anglers from all over flock to its waters for catch-and-release fishing. Be sure to call ahead for reservations, because the park limits fishing along the river. This lovely mountain retreat is more than a pretty stream. Hikers and bikers will love exploring the trails and roads, but they might just love returning to one of the six gorgeous cottages even more. Yup, cottages are the main way to stay in style out here, and we’re sure that you’ll be all about the possibility of having your morning coffee on a streamside porch. Heck, can we come, too?

When to go

The best time to visit Smithgall Woods State Park is during the spring and fall when the weather is mild and the natural scenery is at its peak. Summer offers lush greenery, but be prepared for warmer temperatures. Winters are quiet and serene, though some facilities may be limited.
