It is 3 blocks (cross no main roads) to Shamrock Park and the Venetian Intercoastal Waterway with walk and bike trail, playground, tennis courts, basketball hoops and nature center plus restrooms at the park. Our quiet, safe neighborhood includes a boat ramp, a separate kayak launch as well as fishing spots along the intercoastal. All 4 of the Venice beaches (including a dog beach) are within 7 miles of our location and are well known for finding shark teeth. Our beach's offer free parking, outdoor yoga, drum circle and live music. Downtown Venice offers a variety of stores, restaurants, souvenir shops, high end clothing, an interactive splash fountain and several ice cream shops. It also offers Historic Walking Tours and Farmer's Market (Saturday mornings). Venice has four main beaches: Venice Municipal Beach 4.8 miles (the most popular); Nokomis Beach 6.9 miles (home of the Drum Circle at sunset on Wednesday and Saturday evenings); South Brohard Beach (22 acres including a dog park) 4.5 miles and Caspersen Beach 5.3 miles (the longest beach in Sarasota County and famous for its shark teeth). 30amp electric and water included. Red Mombin, and thousands of banana plants. Fishing can be great, wildlife and bird watching too. Fenced and gated for safety, this old historic nursery property has good vibes and plenty to offer. Until you see it - you really may not understand. Parts of property are wide open, other areas are rugged and difficult to walk through including some wetland areas. The nursery has plenty of trees, and some fields -the large pond is surrounded by cattails and marsh/wetlands and has fish (Bass, Tilapia, Sunfish, Catfish). This is a perfect place for being close to the island without paying island money. Emilie greeted us when we first came in, and then left us alone for the rest of the stay. Her place is very peaceful, it's a dead end so very few cars driveby. The spot was nice and shaded, we stayed a week and I would definitely stay again.

It was the first experience for my wife and myself with Hipcamp and we really enjoyed staying at Emily’s place. This is great place to stay at for short and longer time. Emily is a very nice and helpful person. She advised us places to eat and explore around in Cortez. The lot was equipped for all hook ups and we could easily get power and fresh water for our motorhome. Truly recommend this place!

A working farm oasis perfect for primitive camping! There is a sandy drive looping around a pond area where rustic camp sites are designated; so it makes the camping best for tenting or a camper van sized vehicle. There is no restroom, showering, water, electric available, but this is not a deal breaker. The land is lovely and sites are well spaced and give you privacy. A bit of highway hum can be heard, but not enough to distract or keep you awake. It is best to make reservations in advance and arrive prior to sundown. This will give you time to scope out the farm and sites as there is no lighting to guide you. I would definitely stay again!

Nice quiet spot, was a bit confused finding gate as it’s at a dead end in a neighborhood and I assumed it was more country from the pics, so I thought I was lost. Mike was very helpful and met me at the gate and I followed him to my spot. Surroundings in my area were pretty. Site 7 wasn’t exactly as the pic represented.. it was a pull off next to the dirt road that takes you around the pond. Not much room to put out a tent but I was camping in my car so it was fine for me. I drove around the pond and other areas had more room, so if you’re tent camping I’d pick a different site than 7. Overall, it’s a great location and a nice safe stay and would stay here again

Pure Florida Magic

One of the most beautiful state parks! If you go around May there are fields of wild flowers. And anytime a year you can find alligators, wild boars, deer, and tons of other cool creatures roaming around the hiking trails. Be sure to check out the tree canopy walk. And rent a canoe and paddle around. It’s awesome.

Big Flats Campground

Quiet, shaded campground. Handicap accessible, paved campsites, restrooms and showers. Camp store has grill with good burgers and craft beer on tap but not any real camp provisions. Hike about 6 miles round trip to Deep Hole to in beautiful wilderness area and watch alligators as close as you dare :) Get permit at Ranger station to enter wilderness area. Boat ride on river is completely handicap accessible. View huge alligators closeup from comfort of boat sunning on shore, learn about their habits and biology. Suspension bridge climb is also awesome but requires strong knees!

Big Flats Campground

Tent area is fairly small but scenic, and across from open area with RV's. 1/2 mile from bike and kayak rentals and camp store.

Favorite. State. Park. I primitive camped a year ago at the Mossy Oak Campsite and it was perfect! Two-mile hike in and plenty of space to set up camp under a beautiful hammock so there's plenty of shade cover. The park itself has 39 miles of hiking trails, look-out points, cycling opportunities, as well as kayak and canoe rentals (or bring your own!) for jaunts down the Myakka River. There are other primitive sites that require a further hike-in but are sometimes unavailable due to flooding so call ahead and ask about conditions! You really can't go wrong at any campsite, primitive or not.
