We loved our brief stay at the Back 40, on the Myakka River. A few suggestions to future travelers:
1) book it - this is a beautiful property at the end of a long dirt road, nestled into live oaks. Your campsite might be near others, but you can't see them.
2) be sure to ask the host about fossil hunting nearby. The Peace River is close, and the host has ample experience and is happy to share! After we broke camp, we took our two kids (9 & 7) to Arcadia for a few hours of fossil gathering. Super fun!!
3) The sound of gunfire, off in the distance: there's a gun club pretty far away, and as noted in other reviews, you might hear it. It's a light "pop pop pop" and not a "bang bang bang," and no one but me in our campsite knew what they were hearing. Those sounds were oddly starting up at about dark (6:00) and probably quit by 6:45 - was not disturbing.
4) bring kale for the tortoises!

We had a great time, Rebecca was a great host and very communicative. The property is very large, private and cool. They have firewood and ice for sale which came in handy for us. 10/10 will be returning.

The Back 40
I really enjoyed my stay in The Back 40. The campground was really well kept and the host ensured that my stay was a enjoyable as possible. While walking the land I observed other sites which I would also consider staying at, as they were also easy to reach and maintained nicely. The restroom was also very clean which is always welcome. Overall, I had a great experience and would book again.

I went tent camping and we set up our tent to view the river, great spot! Our dog loved it too.
We woke up to some cows by us in the morning which is a fun way to start your day.
Great stay and would recommend.

Had a wonderful time here. The view was spectacular and the camp site was perfect! Was able to feed and pet the cows and also the tortoises! Have so many new memories now ad can't wait for another trip here!

Beautiful and secluded. Loved the private site among the palm trees and next to the river. We also loved getting to meet the tortoises.

This was a really cool property that’s very private right in classic old Florida land. Out campsite was huge, had a nice fire pit and fire ring, and backed right up to a cool creek with sandy bluffs. Highly recommend!

We had a great time! Kids had so much fun and really loved the cows and tortoises too! Would definitely go back! Was a very peaceful and beautiful area.

The host were excellent and kind. Sweet spot to hide out for a couple days. Can conoe, fish, just sit around and enjoy the scenery. Kid friendly and just all around very nicely set up.

Positives: Lots of trees, nice little creek, deer, otters playing in the evenings, huge camping spot and privacy.
Negatives: 7 miles of washboard shell road to get there ( it was graded the day after we got there) and cowpies scattered over the entire camp. No electric or potable water made $139 a bit pricy.

I loved camping at Becca and Kary’s spot, this is now my favorite camping place yet! I loved how quiet it was and serene- it felt like I was the only one there. My dog loved being able to swim in the river. Lots of time spent riverside sunbathing and reading. The porta potty was clean and convenient. The only sounds to be heard were birds and night sounds mostly, I did hear some moo’ing and a dog barking a little bit but it didn’t bother me at all… the whole weekend was SO PEACEFUL. I didn’t want to leave.

The property is expansive and we enjoyed walking around it with our dog. Splashed around and wasted in the water for over an hour. Dog zoomies in the water?? Priceless!
We loved our tent-camping site but on our walk we saw several other nice sites and a picnic area. Next time we may rent kayaks!
We were pleasantly surprised there was a port-o-john on the property, which was very clean.
The only drawbacks were slight. When we stopped at the homestead to meet the host, a barking dog announced our arrival. No front door clearly visible, so it was several minutes of the dog barking non-stop and me calling out for anyone who may hear before someone came out. I may recommend training the son how to host if he is going to regularly be the greeter.
We will bring a shovel next time in case there are cow patties on the campsite, as they are not removed in preparation for guests.
Otherwise, we enjoyed the solitude and quiet. Unassuming place and we were left to our own devices. We will save the spot for future visits!

We continue to have a wonderful experience every time we camp at Costa Myakka!! It’s so beautiful and tranquil.. We requested firewood and Cary brought us a big bunch of great logs to burn. I highly recommend staying there!!

We had a beautiful large private site right on the river. We were able to launch our canoe and kayak at the site. We had otters playing in the river on 2 days. Site was clean and well kept. Currently there is no potable water, so bring water or boil river water. Hosts were outstanding!
