My son and I spent two nights at the Pickle Barrel Cabin and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Perched on a mountaintop near Gualala overlooking a beautiful valley, it was the perfect place to unplug, enjoy the stars, and spend quality time together surrounded by towering coastal redwoods.
Sleeping in the historic 100 year-old pickle barrel was a fun and memorable experience. The property is private and gated, with a nice walking trail that was perfect for the dog.
The host was friendly and responsive, and everything was exactly as described. If you’re looking for a peaceful, unique camping experience on the Northern California coast, I recommend this site.

Such a gem! We loved the cozy cabin, everything was kept very clean and warm. The place was safe and private, at a gated property. My dogs had a good time checking out the spot and roaming around. More equipped than we thought, it got toilet paper and even WiFi! Highly recommended

The Pickle Barrel cabin was fantastic, we want to stay there again. Private, quiet, everything we needed, including wifi (which we weren't expecting). Our first experience with a composting toilet and it was much cleaner than the cleanest outhouse I've ever seen, much cleaner than some homes I've been in! We drove by campgrounds in the area that were so crowded and were grateful to be in our secluded spot. Surrounded by trees, comfortable mattress, the firepit was better than a public campgrounds', plus a hose with fresh water right at the site. Communication with the host was great. Easy drive to fun things to do nearby including a lighthouse and amazing ocean cliff views. My husband and I love history and architecture, so the historic nature of the barrel and furnishings were an extra bonus. We brought a camping cot just in case the bed wasn't big enough for our personal tastes, and there was plenty of room in the barrel to set it up.

The camp was so cute, and so beautiful to wake up in the morning. There was a place nice and flat for a tent and the provided picnic table and fire pit were wonderful. G was very communicative and easy to ask questions to.

We’ve stayed here a handful of times. The host is very sweet and responsive. The Pickle Barrel perfect for us and our small dog. It’s very private and quiet. The bed is comfy and we love making fires inside. We bring our own propane burning stove for cooking outside, an electric kettle for coffee and tea to stay warm and lots of books and magazines to keep us entertained.
The Pickle Barrel is a perfect location for us. During the day we’ll check out the Gualala farmers market (Saturday) then drive up to Point Arena for coffee and breakfast at Cove Coffee, pastries and sourdough at Pelican (only open Wednesdays and Saturdays) then make our way up to Mendocino botanical gardens, come back down to Point Arena pizza for lunch.
There are so many beautiful things to see around this area. Looking forward to staying at Pickle Barrel again!

Pickle Barrel Campsite
We loved the weekend on G's land. It was a peaceful, wooded location. Easy to access with clear directions. Very private, which was particularly appreciated on a busy Memorial Day weekend - but close to beautiful beaches and nearby Gualala. Perfect for the 2 of us and our active pup staying in our camper van. Outstanding outhouse with composting toilet (no, really!)

I stayed here with my family and it was the perfect spot! Super close to beautiful coastal hikes and a cozy nook between trees with easy access to close by towns for any supplies. G was super responsive and helpful. We got some rain despite the forecast saying clear sky's but no issues in our tents and the cabin stayed toasty! I would definitely come stay here again.

This is absolutely stunning experience. If I would describe that in just one word, it would be “privacy”. You are all alone and barely see the host. The site is well fought and nicely organized. The amenities is just enough. you surrounded by a beautiful forest but beautiful and worthy point Arena coast hike is just 15 minutes away. Five stars experience. Highly recommend.

What a perfect mix of comfort and roughing it. We got the extreme weather w/ Thunder and Lightning but everything was cozy in the pickle barrel. It was so perfect to return from our skunk train rainy adventure complete with pouring rain that had collapsed our tarps, but we quickly built a fire in the cottage. tossed the teens in, fixed the tarps. got dinner. going everything right back on track. The compostable toilet is the best we've seen yet in a Hip Camp or otherwise. Our host was perfectly available cor guidance and check in but otherwise unseen. beautiful little hiking loop to take the dog on a quick Trek.
We will definitely return. One word of advice, because you need to take out your trash I would advise doing it daily. We waited and then getting rid of a large bag of trash was challenging before heading back. We travelled home with it because everyone locked their Trash bins these days. One final 💭 The bed was sheer comfort. perfect for two who sleep close. Fantastic old furniture that feels historic and beautiful. yeah, the other danger is that then you leave you may decide you want a pickle barrel and it turns out they're pretty hard to find 🥒 🙏

This was a great site! The land is beautiful, clean, and quiet. The shaded woods were the perfect getaway, but still close to coastal towns, the beach, and hiking trails. The water, composting toilet, fire pit, and table were also a big help making things extra easy for us. 10/10

The land is breathtaking! The trip up from Gualala is on a normal, every day paved road that takes you up a winding mountain, and then once entering the property its not far to the cabin so it doesn't seem like it would be a problem for most vehicles in any weather. The cabin is perched at the top of a hill that overlooks a wooded valley. It is SO peaceful, quiet, and green! The redwoods crackle in the wind and the leaves rustle and it's just a quiet piece of legit paradise only 13ish mins from civilization (which was important for firewood re-stocking, it was COLD up there, which made for perfect fire pit weather!)

Really nice and quirky small hut that was comfortable for a couple. Outdoor space was surrounded by trees and was very peaceful. Short drive to Gualala or Point Arena for food. No cooking facilities on site so bring a stove if that's your plan.

The instructions to the cabin were clear and it was easy finding Gena's place. The stove worked extremely well and we got toasty very quickly. The decors give the cabin an old charm. We enjoyed our stay and our dog loved roaming the ground. Would recommend this to anyone who wants to explore South of Mendocino and Salt Point State park (30 min drive).

WE WILL HAPPILY RETURN! LOVED the privacy and beauty of this special site. We brought our own teardrop camping trailer and enjoyed this amazing site complete with the worlds cleanest compost toilet. Seeing, hearing, and smelling the change of the incredible outdoor space of the campsite. Looking forward to next time already.

Five stars! We had an absolutely wonderful stay at this cabin! From the moment we arrived we felt right at home. The cabin was spotless, beautifully decorated and had all the Comforts and little touches that made it feel special.
The Host was incredibly kind of responsive, making sure we had everything we needed for a comfortable stay. She even recommended a local Festival that we had a blast at. 100% would recommend.

Everything is set for you to enjoy your stay. Really loved the details ! Thoughtful setting of spigot for doing your dishes & drying on an extra table, charming perfect size camping table with extra benches, cozy romantic chairs & fire pit. Restroom right there, very clean. Quiet & private, despite the host lives nearby, we really appreciate the tall trees, the proximity of the ocean, about 11 miles. We even saw the whales going South at Point Arena. Definitely recommend this place.

The bed was broken with sharp edges . It is not secure place but key from pickle barrel was not provided. No carbon monoxide detector installed . The stove is to big for that small area. No fire extinguisher. Bed is too small for second person to sleep in. No security screen door to obtain more air flow . Lots of small bugs. Restroom is not functioning well , No shower . To take showers you have to drive to different campground and you have pay daily fee and have a lots off coins with you , also you have to drive further that stated. The host should be more welcoming and more informative regarding property boundaries, trails and current attractions. The entrance is hard to find and the small dark sign inside “Hipcamp” “ is to far and not readable from the car so it is easily to be miss and you will end up in front the house of the owner, which she will not be pleased. The front of the pickle barrel was peaceful . The price was too high for the comfort provided .

Private, peaceful and accessible! Great site with great amenities (toilet, running water, fire pit and wonderful view). My 3 friends and I (along with 3 doggos) had a fabulous time at this site enjoying the weather, scenery, and each other’s company. Bring some firewood, enjoy the cool weather and mystical morning fog, and kick back for a good time.

Pickle Barrel Campsite
We LOVED our time at the Pickle Barrel campsite! Beautiful spot up on a ridge and the composting toilet was very clean. The host was friendly and checked in with us. We spent a whole day just relaxing at the campsite, which was perfect after weeks on the road/trail. We would absolutely stay here again!
