Unplug and escape
Pretty amazing experience down to the low mosquito level and up to the fact we didn’t have to leave campsite to get in 5 hours worth of hiking. We wanted a pandemic weekend escape to unhook and this place sure delivers. I had even missed out on making a reservation and Michelle returned my call to say they opened up a spot for us. People were courteous at other sites and onsite bathrooms provided what little we needed. My small complaint would be that trail markers were a bit tough on hikes but that added to the adventure and I don’t know if that was from the result of upkeep during the season of pandemic closure. We found lots of mushrooms species including golden chanterelles thanks to the good rain we had. So happy to know of the project and how well it delivers on escape. Grab your tent and turn off your phone, this is the place to be for quiet.
Beautiful and peaceful!
This is a beautiful campground! My family (child and dog included) enjoyed lots of fishing, hiking, and venturing out into the rural community. The area was clean and kept up nice. It feels very safe there. The pond and woods had a lot of animal activity which we loved listening to at night. We camped next to a beautiful gazebo that looks over the pond and the full moon peaked over the trees-- very romantic. It is an area that is open to the public for hiking and fishing so there were a few visitors walking around us but we didn't mind it. We would definitely come back to here!
Peaceful and relaxing
The site was perfect and as advertised. We did have shade in the late afternoon. There was a picnic table and plenty of room for our little teardrop camper trailer. The site is just at the bottom of the levee before you get to the 2nd pond. Close for fishing, close to the hiking trails. The bathroom was handicap accessible and immaculately clean. I would definitely stay here again. Be sure to bring insect repellent and watch out for ticks. There was no cellular service at this site, but we did get it once we were back on the road in front of the farm house.
Great site! The whole project is a hidden gem of Illinois. I brought along my two Bostons and found it pet friendly and safe for them as well. I recommend everyone visit- I'll definitely be back. This is a great place to unplug and get away from it all for a bit.
Labor day weekend
Beautiful campsite, bathrooms were nice. Loved the scenery and local wetlands across the way as well as all the trails!!!! Will definitely come back here, I love everything this place is about.
Gorgeous, with some reservations
Sent this to McCully directly after our stay, but got no response. The takeaway is 1) gorgeous land that could be the perfect place if the conditions are right, but 2) if you have inconsiderate neighbors, probably worth camping somewhere more private because the sites are close enough that lots of noise carries. Note: Upon further inspection we realized that the pond site is listed to accommodate 25 people, so really just an unfortunate mix of inconsiderate folks and acoustics.
“I so badly want to leave an excellent review for you, because this is easily one of the most beautiful and lovingly maintained campsites we have been at during our cross-country road trip, but I just can’t given our experience last night.
I don’t want to leave a public review without letting you know about our experience first. We arrived at our site (the levee) around 7:15pm, and saw that the neighboring campsite had at least one family, which would have been totally fine had another 4 cars not arrived between then and 10pm. By 11pm, there were at least 6 cars and easily 15-20 people camped there. Our neighbors ran a generator until after 11pm, were talking loudly, had a dog that kept barking, and despite asking them to keep it down twice (once at 9:30, and then again at midnight), it was nearly impossible to enjoy the surrounds due to the noise.
We did enjoy our morning and after a rough night wanted to spend some actual time enjoying the place. It’s really fantastic. That said, we thought we had until noon to check-our, but at 11:15, folks who booked the site for tonight rolled up, stating that they had booked it and that check-in is listed after 8am. Someone who works/lives at McCully followed them up on a golf cart, but didn’t tell them to go back to the parking lot, so they idled for almost 45 minutes, watching us while we packed up, which was just an unfortunate way to end what could truly have been an ideal camping experience.
I realize you can’t police every person who makes a reservation, but listing quiet hours, or coming through to make sure people are being respectful of the space and fellow campers would go a long way.
We love what you’re doing and definitely want to support the project, but last night was rough!“
Gorgeous area, private but not too rustic, and extremely well maintained. The bathroom and shower house was immaculate. We had no cell service (ATT) which was a bonus for us. Highly recommend!
Beautiful and private
We loved every minute of our stay. We were celebrating our 1 year wedding anniversary and wanted to be one with nature and have privacy. We got both! The bathrooms were super clean and everyone was very friendly. This is a hidden treasure that we are so happy to have discovered. We will be back!
