The Legend of Possum Hill is an old one. Most likely named thus even before the settlers arived in St. Louis. Before the great expansion west and before the Gateway Arch graced the sky. Wild was the west and animals roamed at will never having seen a man. The acient Indian tribe of Cahokia once had its own travelers who left their mounded cities of pyramids to explore and hunt for new adventure. It was on one of these travels a great storm arose from the spring sky bringing ice down from the heavens. The Indian party was hard pressed to find shelter from such turbulent winds, rain and it was even claimed they witnessed some snow blended in as well well! This particular spring the waters had risen quite high . With this latest storm the creeks and rivers were rushing over their banks. The Indians knew they had to find high ground. They knew they would only be safe in a shelter high enough the raging waters could not breach. Just when they were giving up hope for a suitable place they passed through a low lands grove treading through ankle deep waters when the land started to rise. And rise it did! Up they went up a steep climb and as they crested they found a large grove of hickories, Sycamore and Oak trees. The Indians prized such trees for their strong hard wood and towering hight. They found safety within them and upon chance several hollows in the ancient trees and quickly sheltered themselves in pairs. They weathered until the suns golden rays stretched accross the small pond. In one hollow a young Indian stirred and and he and his companion left their shelter. Reaching back into the tree they grabbed their packs and found hidden behind them, a family of possums who also hIad hid from the storm. Upon return to Cahokia the young Indian told of their travels and remembering the sheltering family of marsupials, he named the place in their honnor because they shared their shelter. And that is the Legend of Possum Hill.Learn more about this land:4 acres with scattered hickory and oak trees with a small fruit orchard in front of an acre size pond. Some of the things you will experience and see are: volunteers helping out;

We purchased our 45 acre farm in 1997, since then we have operated a sustainable small organic farm.
In January of 2018 we purchased 58 more acres that is attached to our land.
The property has a greenhouse and about a half acre of field that we raise vegetables and fruit on.
We have a 3 acre pond with a naturally sustaining fish population, that we swim and boat in. We have some news for everyone from new campers to those that have visited before, we had our pond dredged this fall and winter (2025-2026). this was a much needed improvement for the ecology of the pond and it's inhabitants. We do want everyone to know it will look different for a while. There were trees that had to be removed from the north and east side of the pond, and until we can get the soil moved that came out of the pond, there will be piles of soil around the pond. The depth of the pond will be low until we receive enough rain to fill it back up (we didn't drain it completely, but it is much lower right now). We are keeping site 2 closed for 2026 so the grass has a chance to grow back. We will be adding a few more sites once the pond area is landscaped. There are hiking trails that go through many small pastures and woods with streams running through them.
Plenty of wildlife, hiking and mountain biking areas. We have a certified kitchen at the farm and have products raised and/or made on the farm for folks to purchase.
Ice is available at the farm $5/8 pound bag.
Supposedly our house is haunted and there are a couple of haunted sites within 15 miles of the farm, Anderson Cemetery and Witch's Bridge.
Nearby Taylorville has a Walmart, Aldi, Kroger, and many small local businesses. There is a YMCA and a few parks, in Taylorville.
Lake Sangchris State Park is close by. The capital of Illinois, Springfield, is 35 miles from the farm.

Through the mulberry bushes, past the ducks, chickens, and roosters you'll be met by a dog at the gate, who will guide you to the persimmon grove. Here you will be able to set up camp with ideal views of the stars. The fire pit provided was perfect. Unzipping my tent in the morning and making eye contact with 20 goats was an experience. The views are incredible, hanging out with the goats and the dog in the morning is a memory I will cherish forever. 10/10 recommend.

Great camping spot, easy to find, felt secluded but great facilities in close range. Hosts provided carts to help ferry equipment to the site so the walk from the car was easy.
It was a pretty wet weekend so the walk to the car was a little slippery but overall we loved our stay!

Great spot to stay after our evening plans! We set up under a nice tree canopy and would have hammocked if it was a little cooler. The affordability was a huge win! There is a very bright streetlight (?) at the far end of the property that would have been annoying for a multi-night stay, but we just turned the tent and were fine. Host was super communicative and accommodating. Would definitely book again for a similar stay!

This place is a GEM! Our family had so much fun, despite weather & are looking forward to going back!! Fully stocked with so many things campers usually need to take & no additional charge for these amenities- what a great idea!
The flushing toilet on-site was more than anyone expects @ such a great off grid location.
We found a small painted rock garden there & all 6 of us added to it 🪨🖌️🎨
We didn’t realize the local marina isn’t open to rent on Tuesday & Wednesday, so we didn’t get to explore the water very much, but that wasn’t their fault!

This campsite has become a recurring destination for our group, visited nearly three times each year, and it remains a standout choice for both comfort and atmosphere. Despite being a first‑time organizer, I found the booking process straightforward and efficient.
The host’s professionalism, friendliness, and exceptional patience have consistently elevated our experience. Their commitment to hospitality is one of the reasons this site was originally recommended to us by my older brother — and it’s easy to see why.
The property offers dependable access to essential amenities, including bathrooms and a water source, while still providing a peaceful retreat from the noise and pace of city life. It’s an ideal blend of convenience and quiet, making it a reliable choice for group outings.

It’s probably about as unique as location gets I can’t imagine there’s another one like it in the neighborhood.. it feels like you’re in a SWAT at a well-kept RV park except you’re in the heart of what was once a thriving community during St. Louis’s heyday. I never felt unsafe walking around, but it’s not the kind of place that most people that are staying there live. That said if you want a taste of a place that has a lot said about it that’s over blown. Try this. It’ll be a unique experience. Also, you can walk to the spot bar and grill local black owned business that welcomed me as if I was a regular, you can walk there in about 15 minutes. Host was great and his knowledgeable about the area.

This is hands down one of the most incredible campgrounds we have visited. We loved our stay and cannot wait to plan our next visit. It was close enough to civilization that we didn’t feel completely lost but far enough away that the week held magic and wonder. The kids all loved exploring and playing. super Clean bathrooms and showers. The only problem we had was we needed more time we didn’t get to see all we wanted to!

I stayed at site 3 ponds edge. Beautiful scenery and the hosts are very nice. The spot is surrounded by trees and shady so quite cool even with the sun out. Unfortunately I had to leave early (personal, not anyone else's fault) but I would recommend this place for anyone who wants to get away!

The grandkids LOVED the bunk beds and "treehouse" feel in the cottage. It's a rustic wonderland. The kitchen is well-appointed. This was a perfect landing spot for family to hang out while attending a family reunion in nearby Morrisonville.
Debbie was so friendly and accommodating. We will for sure be back!

I camp with a roof top tent and it's great when you can park right at the site. Karmen verified with me before I arrived I could drive in. The property was awesome and very quiet. My site was in a little Grove of trees above the pond so I set up so I could lay in my tent and look out to a great view. I would definitely love to stay here again.

The place was quiet and peaceful well away from the crowds. I pitched my tent and absolutely SLEPT LIKE A ROCK. The bathrooms and showers were clean and well cared for.
My only complaint, and it's not their fault, is this place is deep into mosquitoes and tick central. In the heat of summer you are what's for dinner. In the cooler months closer to deer season things should be perfect here.
