Bear Chase Brewery is just a half mile walk across the street, and we are 15 miles from Purcellville.  The land and lodge used to be the summer home of a trained opera singer, whose singing could be heard throughout the mountain.  Your Host lives onsite in the stone house that also acts as a hostel for hikers on the Appalachian Trail. Built in the 1930's all from locally sourced hand-hammered stone, the house is open every night from 5pm - 9pm.  Note that we offer several campsites relatively close to each other, so you should expect to see and hear other campers on the property during your stay.  About the listing Pitch your tent in a forested area just a short walk up from where you’ll park your car. Enjoy unbeatable proximity to hiking and panoramic views while still having basic amenities that ensure a comfortable stay.  You’ll have access to a composting pit toilet, and can access potable water from the tap in the lodge. That’s also where you can access hot showers. As noted above, we host Appalachian Trail thru hikers on the property, so you may see them hanging around or sleeping in the bunkhouse near the shared facilities.  For meals, we have picnic tables, and you are encouraged to cook over the fire pits that accompany each site. Please practice Leave No Trace practices during your stay, as the property has raccoons and other critters who will be drawn to any food scraps that are left behind.   Pets are allowed! Please keep them on leash during your stay.   Trash can be disposed of in the bins onsite.  Additional details to note Expect to see and hear other campers on the property during your stay. No kitchen equipment is provided, so campers must bring their own supplies if they'd like to cook. We do not offer WiFi, but there is good cell reception for all common carriers.

Berryville Berries

6 sites ¡ RVs, Tents65 acres ¡ Boyce, VA
We bought this little slice of heaven a little over a year ago. We decided to offer a small section of the land so folks could camp out by the creek and have a peaceful alternative to the cramped RV resorts that are nearby. We'll be growing pumpkins in summer/fall and we're starting the berry patches as well, but right now the produce isn't ready - so you'll have to enjoy the quaint Opequon Creek, quiet sites, and nearby tourist attractions. Ideal visitors will be self-contained units for short stays or just through-traveling. All sites are for dry camping so please be self-contained. We are just now starting this project and have decided to dive in a little earlier due to interested campers. Please be patient as we get this up and running. Email berryvilleberries@gmail.com with any questions. Hope to see you soon! Drive directly to your own private site near the quaint Opequon Creek. Picnic tables and fire rings are available at some of the spots (just ask if you need one, but some folks just bring their own) . You may use our clean porta-potties and trash cans as well. Please help us keep this creek-side berry and pumpkin farm clean and serene for all visitors. We're near I81, Rt 7, I66 and Rt 50/17, grocery stores, Civil War battlefields and so much. The creek is a rocky bottom watershed that flows into the Potomac River. We are just now opening this ground to campers, so please be patient while we work through the learning curve and do let us know if we can do anything for you. This is a DIY camp, not a "bougey" RV resort. You'll need to be self-sufficient. This place is ideal for through-travelers and folks staying for 1 to 3 days, but longer visits are allowed. Just keep in mind that this is simply a working farm, so resort-style campground activities do not exist here. Rather what you will find is serenity and easy access to fun places to visit, especially Civil War tourism and visits to DC and Harpers Ferry. **Please also note that dogs MUST BE LEASHED 100% of the time. If your pet is off leash even one time, you will be asked to leave with no refund - no exceptions.** Quiet, non-barking dogs are allowed to visit (sorry, just has to be said).

Riverdale Farm

2 sites ¡ Lodging35 acres ¡ Capon Bridge, WV
Brand new custom high end "glamping" cabin nestled along the Cacapon River. Cacapon River is one of the cleanest rivers in West Virginia. The name Cacapon was given by the native americans for the healing aspects of the water. The cabin is located on the famous Riverdale Farm property that was home of Captain David Pugh. Captain Pugh was the last person to sign succession papers to make West Virginia a state. As we say, " West Virginia started here". The property was home of one of the first schools in West Virginia, the local post office and the Hook's Mill. People have traveled to this farm to enjoy camping and outdoor leisure since the 1830s. Come continue the tradition here.

Buffalo Gap Retreat and Camp

68 sites ¡ RVs, Tents70 acres ¡ Capon Bridge, WV
Located in the foothills of the Potomac Highlands, Buffalo Gap is a 1950s era former Mountain Kids Camp turned Retreat by a group of individuals who had a vision of creating a space where family and friends can enjoy a relaxing mountain get-away. Consequently, the 70 acre property is teaming with creeks and streams, along with a 1.5 acre spring fed lake, making it a peaceful and beautiful retreat from the daily stresses of life. Rent a cabin, camp, have a wedding or family reunion, enjoy our lakeview cafĂŠ, swim, hike, kayak, canoe, and so much more. Sacred Roots Herbal Sanctuary

8 sites ¡ Lodging, Tents32 acres ¡ Shepherdstown, WV
Looking for a personal retreat or get away ? Escape to our beautiful, RUSTIC 32 acre wild homestead / farm. What do we mean by "rustic" ? The camping experience we offer is about unplugging from the modern world , getting back to basics, and re-connecting with the land. Campsites are nestled in the woods. So although your vehicle will be parked within 50 ft or so from site, you cannot pull directly up to the site because of the trees. Feel free to wander through the herb gardens, eat your meals in the garden pavilion (we have picnic tables there and hammocks), get your Zen on in the meditation hut , and stroll through the woodland medicine path where we grow endangered and at at risk plant plants. (Please note that the woodland medicine path goes to seed by the Fall and is usually munched down by the deer by then, but is still a nice short stroll in the woods). We love dogs...but please leave them at home.

Our Farm

2 sites ¡ Lodging100 acres ¡ Strasburg, VA
Our Farm sits on over 200 acres of family owned farmland that has been in the family for over 100 years. It is the mission of Our Farm to provide experiences, products, and a destination for folks to learn more about agriculture in the Valley and to instill a connection to the land. At this time, Our Farm is focusing on unique lodging or "glamping*" options to bring people to the farm. We are planning our Christmas tree farm now and do have grass-fed beef available upon request. This spring we are adding a garden with fresh veggies, fruit, and herbs for our visitors to partake of.

Bear Creek Clothing Optional Camp

1 site ¡ RV, Tent6 acres ¡ WV
Enjoy a naturist lifestyle amidst 6 wooded acres alongside Bear Creek, with Bear Stream running through the middle of it. Quiet and private, with paths and trails on the property. Dry firewood is there at the campsite. A small RV onsite provides a bathroom and shelter, but camping by the creek, listening to the water running is the way to do it. The site is also very private and Naturist friendly, and perfect for the first time nudist, so it's time to get back to nature. Since guests have the whole site, they can decide whether it's clothing optional or not. With the new boat launch site near Capon Bridge, downriver on the Cacapon river nearby, and a few more upriver towards Wardensville, it's a great site for kayakers and maybe canudists to plan river outings and stay nearby. There are multiple places to set up tents, or hammocks, either at the main campfire ring, or at several sites away from the main campsite. Throughout spring, rear wheel drive is recommended, and 4 wheel drive might be needed, and during the summer if heavy rain is expected. The RV is limited to two adults, and two to three children, due to it's size.

Camping near Winchester guide

Overview

Saddled by the Blue Ridge and Allegheny Mountains, Winchester, VA hosts Shenandoah University and the Museum of Shenandoah Valley, complete with a historic house and gardens, detailing the history of Winchester. Campers might enjoy seeing the museum’s gallery of miniature furnished houses, or taking part in apple festivities at the annual Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival in May. After a tour around the city, travel into the wilderness at Shenandoah River State Park. Go fishing, boating, or horseback riding through the park before setting up at a riverfront campsite or yurt. Sky Meadows State Park and Cedar Creek & Belle Grove National Historical Park also bring a wealth of camping opportunities centered around fishing, hiking, and colonial farming history that shaped the area from the American Revolution through the Civil War.

Where to go

Raymond R. "Andy" Guest, Jr. Shenandoah River State Park

On the south fork of Shenandoah River, the state park with the same name sits along 1,600 acres and 5.2 miles of riverfront shoreline. Campers staying at one of 12 riverfront tent campsites or pet-friendly RV campsites complete with full hookups and firepits can enjoy scenic views right from the campground. Set out on 24 miles of hiking trails throughout the park. There are designated trails for biking and horseback riding, as well. On a hot day, launch a canoe or fishing boat downstream from Bentonville access area, where waders and anglers can fish for crappie and bluegill. Winter campers will find that lodging is available year-round in the park. Reserve an ADA-accessible glamping yurt or cabin rental with a fireplace and hot shower for colder months.

Sky Meadows State Park

Sky Meadows State Park is an International Dark Sky Park full of history, especially about the colonial farming practices that formed the landscape. Take in scenic views of woodlands and pastures spread throughout the state park’s 1,860 acres and 22 miles of hiking trails. Sky Meadows is a popular stopover for hikers along the Appalachian Trail, and offers primitive hike-in campsites along Hadlow Trail—about a mile away from parking. Each campsite has pit toilets, bear-proof lockers, and tent pads. Fishing at Turner Pond is available for those with a VA state fishing license, which can be purchased in town from local vendors. For campers with kids, check out the Children’s Discovery Area rife with nature, especially on the well-marked .7-mile TRACK trail.

Cedar Creek & Belle Grove National Historical Park

Cedar Creek & Belle Grove National Historical Park encompasses two historically significant Shenandoah Valley locations: the Battle of Cedar Creek in the Civil War and the Belle Grove Plantation. The park offers interpretive historical ranger programs, alongside self-guided and ranger-led tours through battlefields, soldier camps, and the plantation house. The rest of the park is also based on the history of the area, with hiking trails following trenches built by Union soldiers in 1864. There’s no camping in the park, but many privately owned campgrounds nearby welcome tents and RVs to campsites with hot showers and potable water.

When to go

Winchester has a humid continental climate, with hot summers and mild winters. Lots of parks and campgrounds stay open year-round, though some areas may be more difficult to get to with snowfall. Campers love heading to Winchester in May to hit the Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival, where Winchester’s surrounding orchards have earned it the moniker “Apple Capital of the World.” In summer, campers can enjoy water activities in temperatures that range from 62°F to 83°F.
