I grew up in the Philadelphia area and in 2002, I followed my calling and moved out to Portland, OR. I am a nature lover and enjoy everything that the Pacific Northwest has to offer -- the mountains, unlimited hiking and biking trails, beautiful lakes and rivers. Not to mention the abundance of good IPAs, coffee and delicious food. Over the years, I camped in several places in the area and always dreamed of owning a cabin near Mt. Hood. In 2008, my dream came true when I purchased my cabin and land in ZigZag. I am very excited to share this magical place with you and hope that you enjoy your time!

Located on Mount Hood about an hour from Portland, Zigzag Mountain Farm is home to an organic garden, old homestead, house, yurts, and barn. 50 acres of open meadows and forest, bordering thousands of acres of national forest. The farm is home to an organic garden, campfire circle, picnic area, a city bus with a campers' kitchen, outdoor seating area with BBQ, kids play structure and hiking trails. The cabin on the property was built by the original homesteaders. Britta and Jim purchased the property in 2009. It had been vacant for a number of years. Giant slash piles scattered the land from previous logging. The house and cabin were not livable and needed major renovations. In 2019, we purchased and brought in a city bus and converted it to a campers kitchen. A year-round creek flows through the property and 3 major rivers are nearby. The Zigzag Mountain Lookout Trail leaves from the property. The property was homesteaded in the early 1900's. E. Mountain Drive was the wagon train trail into Portland, known as the Barlow Trail. Zigzag Mountain Farm offers the perfect escape from the city.

My husband, Chandler and I were both lucky enough to have grown up in the beautiful Mt. Hood area. Now with hard work and determination we are raising our five children in this magical place. A few years ago Chandler sold a large portion of his company and we purchased our rustic log cabin. We love the idea of sharing our peaceful cabin and property with the world! We recently decide to put our primary home on the site, to allow us to catch up on our debt. We are so thankful that both our places are loved by our guests. Renting our homes has allowed us to work a little less and enjoy our little ones while they are still little. Learn more about this land:Rustic log cabin on secluded 34 acres with exceptional Mt. Hood and Zig Zag wilderness views all around. Only 3.3 miles from highway 26. The property is horse trailer accessible. Just moments away from endless hiking, horse trails, and sandy river beaches...not to mention all the other Mt. Hood area attractions. We also rent our property for weddings, family reunions, camp-outs, graduation parties and other events. Bring your own bedding and towels or we can supply them for you to use for an additional fee. 🏕️ Welcome to Vanhala: Your Mt. Hood Spring Basecamp Spring at Vanhala is one of the best-kept secrets on Mt. Hood. Snow lingers in the trees while the valley wakes up — flowing creeks, crisp mornings, and longer daylight hours make this the perfect shoulder-season escape. Whether you’re chasing late-season turns, hiking, or just want a quiet forest reset, this is your spot. ⸻ 🔥 Fire Policy A propane fire pit is always available and allowed year-round. Wood fires are permitted in our two fire rings when conditions allow — spring can bring changing conditions, including wind or early seasonal restrictions. If wood fires aren’t permitted, the propane setup ensures you’ll always have a warm place to gather. ⸻ 🌲 Spring Amenities • ⚡ 30-amp power + 120V adapter • 🚿 Hot shower (clutch after a wet hike or ski day) • 💧 Clean, potable water • 🔥 Two wood fire pits + propane pit • 🏕️ 20x12 four-season covered hangout area • 🚐 Level gravel pads for vans/RVs • 🐾 Fully fenced & dog friendly (treats + bowl included) ⸻ 🧰 Gear Bin Includes • TP, body wash, shampoo, soap • Candles, matches, charcoal • Backup toiletries • Dog treats + bowl • Clean camp toilet with bark cover + scented swabs (Guests must pack out all waste. Bring your own system if preferred.) ⸻ 🧭 Close to Everything • 1 mile to groceries, fuel, coffee, bakery • ~12 minutes to Government Camp (spring skiing) • ~6 minutes to Lolo Pass Perfect for spring skiing, hiking, mountain biking, and low-key weekend resets. ⸻ ⚠️ Spring Conditions Expect a mix of conditions — mud, lingering snow patches, and occasional freeze–thaw cycles. Gravel pads stay solid, but AWD is still a good call early in the season. Weather can shift quickly on Mt. Hood, and spring storms aren’t uncommon. Please arrive before dark when possible and be mindful of natural forest conditions, including wet ground and occasional falling branches. ⸻ 🌿 Come experience Mt. Hood spring at Vanhala — quiet, green, and just waking up

Hood, you'll find the most peaceful corner of the Pacific Northwest for you to pitch your tent or park your van. We are conveniently located just 6 minutes from downtown Sandy, known for its food trucks, outdoor gear shops, and the famous Joe's Donuts. Though we are right off a busy highway, we're in a valley so all you'll hear are the tranquil sounds of Cedar Creek's flowing waters and the chirping birds who live in the cedars overhead. The small clearings throughout the property provide natural privacy for our campers, while the barn provides amenities making it difficult to leave. We're so honored to share this magical place with as many people exploring the Pacific Northwest as we can. We hope your stay here will bring you a deep sense of peace, inspire creativity, give you whatever it is you're in need of at this moment in time. We can't wait to host you! NON-NEGOTIABLE RULES: PACK IN PACK OUT: We do not have trash or recycling bins down in the creekside campground so please keep your waste contained and take it with you when you leave. Please do not throw any trash in the porta-potties. 4WD/AWD REQUIRED PAST THE BARN: The steep gravel roads can be tough for some cars and rigs (particularly on the way out) and consequently, can cause a lot of damage to our roads. So for everyone's safety, we have restricted access to only vehicles with 4WD or AWD only. Please do not message us asking us to advise on the vehicle you have. If someone in your party has a 2WD vehicle, they can park up in the entry lot and get shuttled down to the campsites in a 4WD vehicle. If we see a 2WD vehicle in the campground, we will ask you to leave and if we have to dig you out, we will charge a $200 fee. Thank you for respecting our policies and helping us maintain our space. DOG FRIENDLY: We are as dog friendly as it gets here. Unleashed dogs are allowed on this property down by the creek (on-leash required in and around the barn). If you have a fear of dogs, or have dogs that are not friendly with other people or fellow dogs, this probably isn't the right campground for you. Of course, we expect all dog owners to keep an eye on their pets so they don't disturb other campers or ingest anything they're not supposed to. QUIET HOURS: 10pm-9am. We ask that guests keep the noise (loud music and loud conversations) to a minimum between 10pm and 9am. We live onsite and will enforce these if we have to (please don't make us). NO FIREARMS, FIREWORKS OR ILLEGAL SUBSTANCE USE. This is not a late night party campsite. This property is best enjoyed in the daylight and we encourage campers who want to take full advantage of the scenery, will abide by the quiet hours, and maintain a safe space for all. OTHER INFO: CELL SERVICE: There is an AT&T tower on our property so that gets the best service by far. Verizon is pretty good. T-mobile does not get reception here. There is high-speed internet up at the barn that is accessible with a Blue Barn Pass.

We purchased this slice of paradise in 2003 as a place to relax, recharge, and someday build our dream home. It started as nothing more than a gravel road leading to a small clearing with an old bus and a couple decks. Our children have grown up out here learning a deep respect for nature and the real (non digital) world. Now empty nesters, we live on site. Part of our retirement planning is to spend next several years developing the lower portion of the property (approx. 15 acres) into a campground and retreat for our guests, as well as our own family, friends, and grandchildren. The campground area (currently) consists of a handful of primitive campsites, and a group area. We are working steadily on improvements, including adding more sites, improving the roadways, and upgrading the common areas. In all we will likely have 12-15 total designated camping areas (including a group area or two, as well as a couple hike to secluded locations). There is also a lot of additional information listed on the individual campsite descriptions.

First thing everyone should know is that we are under the landing approach to PDX. Some planes are quiet, and some are not. My wife, our farm pals, and I are used to it but, we want you to be aware. So, our property: coming in at roughly under 30 acres, Cold Springs Farm, established in 1885 and sits nestled in its own little valley. The farm's name is inspired by spring feeds a small pond at the Northeast Corner (near the Alder Site) that has crawdads, Mallards and Blue Heron. Of course, there are also curious Raccoons and Possums about. A canyon running the north of the property in known for its wildlife population including bear, deer and elk. Wherever you camp, you may hear someone moving through the forest at night. Although we are a short 30-minutes to Portland, our private farm is free from unwanted lights and traffic (save the intermittent air traffic), when the skies are clear, starwatchers who bring their telescopes have many vantage points from which they can indulge their hobby! Our wide-open field is great for kite flying, frisbee, doggie frolics, and it's also a great place to practice your drone piloting skills. Mid-July through early October you have access to pick as many blackberries as you want and they are delicious. Cold Springs Farm is also a sanctuary. Our current residents include our Kunekune Pigs: Chris P Bacon, Wilbur, Piggit, Hamish McBiscuit and Rowdy. The resident goats include Dolly, Freddy McNubbins, Princess Daisy, Mikey, Mildred, Marvin, Daphne, Booger, Cyra-Nose, and Delilah our big, gentle goat. Rounding out the bunch are our farm dogs, Oscar Braveheart, Hoppin' Howie and Lulu-bear our rescue Pyrenees and resident sweetheart. We look forward to welcoming to our Columbia River Gorge farm and introducing you to what our beautiful area has to offer. We are just minutes from many of the gorge waterfall hikes including the historic Multnomah falls and Vista House sitting on Crown Point. One of Oregon's favorite summer concert venues, McMenamins Edgefield, is a short 10 miles. And we have economy spots specifically for Mcmenamin Concert goers. Contact us for details. Concerts, wine tasting, and hiking within a short distance of the campsite, plus goat and pig cuddles (should you want them).

Mt. Hood National Forest camping guide

Overview

About

Stretching from the Oregon-Washington border on the Columbia River and extending south to snow-capped Mt. Jefferson, Mt. Hood National Forest has long been popular with Oregonians looking to get out in nature. The hiking opportunities are hard to beat, with miles of trails traversing over a million acres of wilderness, plus plenty of options for camping, rafting, horseback riding, mountain biking, fishing, and boating. Winters are equally magical, and popular activities include skiing, snowboarding, and even just relaxing by the fire at the historic Timberline Lodge in the Mount Hood town of Government Camp.

Tips for snagging a campsite

  1. Many campgrounds are available on a first-come, first-served (FCFS) basis and can fill up on weekends. If you need a weekend site, you’ll have better luck showing up on Friday evening than on Saturday morning.
  2. Plan ahead of time. Reservable campsites, cabins, and yurts open up six months in advance, at 7am Pacific daily, and can be reserved online.
  3. Check with the US Forest Service for last-minute cancellations.
  4. Reservable sites sometimes open up at the last minute. Hipcamp campgrounds, RV parks, and lodges provide alternative camping options in the area.

When to go

Mt. Hood National Forest is at its most pleasant between the months of July and September, when temperatures tend to be warm and rainfall is limited. If you want good weather without the crowds, come after Labor Day, when Oregon kids are back in school. However, be aware that August and September are wildfire season, and if the risk is high, your campsite reservation may get canceled. May and June are also possibilities for visits, but you’re more likely to encounter rainfall and some parts of the forest may still be blanketed with snow.

Know before you go

  • Always check for road closures before heading out. Snowfall, landslides, fires, and road construction can lead to area closures.
  • Fire bans are common in this area, particularly in summer, and may extend to propane stoves and other cooking devices. Consider packing food that doesn’t require cooking.
  • Be prepared to pack in what you pack out, and don’t forget garbage bags. While there are plenty of campgrounds with amenities such vault toilets, drinking water, and RV hookups in Mt. Hood National Forest, many others are primitive and lack facilities for waste disposal.
  • Warm days don’t mean warm nights. Temperatures can drop drastically after dark, particularly in areas of higher elevation.
  • Download offline maps before you leave. Cell service can be spotty in much of Mt. Hood National Forest.
