Plumtree Campground and Retreat is an off-the-beaten-path property for hikers, bikers (both pedal and motor), campers, adventurers, parkway goers, mountain lovers, fisherman, and skiers/snowboarders. The property is the former Blind Squirrel Campground which included a zip line recreation area. Relics remain, with zip lines and bridges still running through the tree canopy and an old climbing wall. These aren’t currently in use, and cannot be explored, but they add a wonderland-like quality to the land. Other features also remain that can be used: a sliding rock waterfall which is a short hike within the campground property, moderate trails for hiking, and mountain biking running from the waterfall through the back of the property (these trails are mountainous, so please enter at your own risk), fruit trees, blueberry bushes, small trout pond, a playground, an open meadow for star gazing, and our friendly neighborhood duck, Howard. (He hangs by the pond and accepts treats!) You are welcome to explore all these features, but please be mindful and respectful of residents and guests, do not enter or explore the greenhouses or gardens, and remain aware that this is mountainous terrain with inherent risks. This is a rustic property in the forest, centrally located to all the area has to offer. Privately run, we offer a variety of lodging options: - Seasonal and daily camping with full hook up RV sites - Popup sites, tent sites with water and electric - Group tent site with pavilion - Primitive tent sites - Primitive cabins (no electricity/water) - Lodge with four bedrooms/bath - Cabin with a two-bedroom/bath among the trees - Cabin with a one-bedroom/bath pond side - Studio apartments. There are 5 tent sites boasting elevated tent platforms nestled against the mountain. Sites are generally mossy, treed (think hammocks!), and have gravel parking. There are 3 his and her bathhouses on the property with the largest within walking distance of the tent loop, with 2 toilets and 3 stall showers each. This corner of the world has so much to offer and we are close, but just far away enough from it all. The scenic drives alone are worth venturing out: - Blue Ridge Parkway - Linville Falls - Linville Caverns - Grandfather Mountain - Beech Mt Ski Slope/Rec area - Jonas Ridge Snow Tubing Park - Sugar Mt Ski Slope/Rec area - Roan Mt State Park - Appalachian Trail - Yellow Mountain Gap Trail Head - North Toe River - Banner Elk - Little Switzerland - Mayland Dark Sky Observatory - Brown Mountain OHV Trail System All these adventures within a 20-40-minute drive. Boone is only 50 minutes away, and Asheville 1 hr. 20 minutes. Off HWY 19-E is Spears Country Store, about 5 minutes from here, where you can get basic supplies, propane, and gas. We can also provide firewood for a fee. Ingles grocery stores in both Newland and Spruce Pine are just 20 minutes away. In Spruce Pine you will also find a Walmart, historic downtown with many shops and restaurants. Be aware cell service can be spotty in the area depending on your carrier. WIFI is offered, but not guaranteed due to the mountainous terrain. This primitive cabin is a great alternative to tent camping. You have a solid roof over your head, a great covered porch and a nearby bathroom with a full walk-in shower. The cabin does have an electrical cord running to it for phone charging and other low electrical drawing devices. It is equipped with a queen air bed cot. The walls have been insulated and encapsulated in plastic. The ceiling has not been insulated.

This wonderful cabin was finished with materials from our old chicken coop. Sit back and take in the wonderful views from the porch. The cabin is equipped with a window unit air conditions, portable electric heater, ceiling fan and electrical outlets. Just bring an air mattress, cot or sleeping bag and you are good to go! 4x4 or AWD recommended for the cabin parking spot. Other parking is available for 2WD vehicles

At an elevation of 2,867 feet, Plumtree is in the Blue Ridge Mountains convenient to Newland, Spruce Pine, Banner Elk, Newland, Little Switzerland, Beech Mountain, Sugar Mountain and Grandfather Mountain. This area's beautiful and magical scenery can be explored by driving on the Blue Ridge Parkway, hiking the Appalachian Trail, exploring Linville Falls, trekking Yellow Mountain, fishing on the Toe River and its tributaries, taking in the views from Grandfather Mountain, skiing/tubing the local ski resorts,Â and discovering the surrounding down town areas with unique shops and restaurants.Â Enjoy the remote and relaxing atmosphere on property that includes hiking/mountain biking trails, a playground and a sliding rock waterfall. The space: Hilltop is located in Plumtree Campground and Retreat. The cabin has a covered porch with two gates and a back deck with a gas grill and picnic table. There is a fire pit for use. Keyless entry for self-check in/out 1 bedroom with a queen bed including linens Bathroom with fluffy towels and complimentary soap Central heat/air Washer/dryer Full kitchen with refrigerator, stove, microwave, and toaster Dishes, pots/pans and utensils Coffee maker with complimentary coffee TV with Direct TV box Other things to note: There is parking at the side of the cabin. Speed limit on property is 5 mph and be watchful for walkers, bikers and children. Please be respectful of other guests. No loud music or parties in cabin, on porch or pavilion. No smoking in cabin (additional cleaning fee will be charged) and porch/pavilion. Pets: Limit of one dog and an additional dog may be allowed by pre-approval. Pet fee of $25 will apply (second dog will be additional $25) and will be paid prior to check in. Dogs must be nonaggressive, house trained, under voice/e-collar command and remain on a leash while on property. No pee pads are allowed in studios and waste must be picked up/disposed. Dogs must be supervised at all times and not left on property alone. Any disruptive behavior will not be tolerated and guests will be asked to leave. Damage by dogs will be the responsibility of the owner.

The group tent area, located at the top of our tent loop includes exclusive use of the pavilion, a large fire pit area, and spots for 3-4 medium to large tents and several spots for smaller tents. There is a park-style grill, water hydrant, and power in the pavilion. Situated adjacent to the creek, you can easily hear from this wonderful, shady site!

I-1 is a beautiful creek side site overlooking Issacs Branch. This site is the closest to the bathhouse of the I-sites. It is very private and had a nice path to the creek. Primitive site with no water or electric. Tent platform is approximately 16' round

Where to start with this review. I guess from the beginning, Jed/Jenifer were fantastic with recommendations and accommodations. We booked B3 as from the photos it looked to be the best spot for my family of five and a dog. When planning how much we wanted to pack for our four day three night trip, I reached out to ask for recommendations. Our three boys ages 9, 12 & 14, like to camp in their own space, separate tents/hammocks. After chatting they recommended hike in site H3 for our crew and we decided to pack our enclosed trailer as it would be easier with rain in the forecast. It was set and couldn't had been a better spot for us. Upon arrival, we were met by camp manager Jimmy, who led us to the perfect parking spot for our rig and then both him and Jed helped us get our gear to the top where our site was. We were the only one up there among the four sites and again couldn't had picked a better spot. We had such a fantastic time at this tucked away campground. The websites and photos do not do this place justice! I don't think it was just our love for the mountains, no cell service (which we loved the most) or the beautiful weather. I believe it had more to do with the fact we didn't have to leave the campground, we felt more than welcomed there and the hospitality from Jimmy was fantastic. It was a trip to remember and we'll surely be back.

Plumtree was absolutely a dream camping spot! The site was perfect for our jeep setup, and left nothing to be desired. We were met by the hosts upon arrival, and they were extremely gracious the whole trip. The bath house was kept absolutely spotless, and was in a perfect location. We slept so good at night with the sound of the creek nearby. We'll definitely be back, with the whole family next time!

Primitive Cabin #1

This was our second time staying at plumtree and both times were great experiences. The camp hosts are super sweet and very helpful. They went out of their way to make sure we were comfortable. I heard from others staying there that they opened their property to people who were displaced by Helene free or charge. The place is very affordable and is a true gem off the beaten path. We will definitely be back.

I recently stayed at Plumtree with my buddy. We were in town to hike Grandfather Mountain. We ended up staying in the community campground by the creek as a last minute upgrade. Jimmy was extremely helpful throughout our entire stay. I honestly think it was the perfect campground.

We had a great time camping at Plumtree Campground! The hosts were very helpful and friendly! The location is close to a vast variety of great for hiking spots. Campground was quiet with plenty of amenities. Bathroom were clean and well taken care of, grounds were kept up nicely, camp store was full stocked with anything you could need and everyone we ran in to was very helpful

Secure serene and lots to do nearby. Reasonable rates. Trails waterfalls…Bathrooms & showers, Cabins, Tent sites & RV spaces , my site was across from 3 sites that a van could easily fit into. Some tent sites have electrical outlets & potable water. There’s a little store ( GREAT COFFEE) & they even bring you a bundle of wood & ice!! Dog friendly, kid friendly & the hosts Jed & Jennifer are very down to earth relaxed happy people, they go out of their way to make you feel at home. If you’re looking for a great place, close to other amazing places like GrandFather Mt, Scottish Highlands Festival or just a slice of cake from the Tarten & then be able to go back to your peaceful camp site … this is the perfect place! I really didn’t want to leave.

I loved camping at Plumtree. Jed and Jimmy were both super. Jed met me at the gate to escort me to my awesome pull through campsite at B6. I needed to extend my stay for one night which the app doesn't allow so they took care of that for me. The store is very well stocked and the bath house is amazing! The trails were awesome and my dog loved them. It's a beautiful place and I would definitely stay again.

We were attending the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games and wanted a place to camp that was near enough to the shuttles and still a pleasant campground. We were thrilled with Plumtree. We picked site B4 because it was more toward the end that overlooked the field and the stream. Score! The campground was clean and upkept. The bathrooms were very nice and clean, warm water, nice facilities. The fire rings were nice size and location. The picnic table was solid. The gravel driveway had enough room for our tent and our van and felt decent under the tent. There are sites with platforms (we didn't use these), but from upclose, they look very nice and sturdy. There was so much shade that it really kept the weather cool in the middle of July. Almost no sun peaks through. At nights, we could hear the pleasant burble of the stream on the night air. In the morning, they were offering free and tasty coffee in their general store. There was even a nice little sitting area outside in the shade. There was a nearby waterfall that we didn't get a chance to walk to. The staff and owners were pleasant and helpful, and they even cart-delivered our purchased firewood to our site. When I'm in the area again, I will gladly stay here again. Kudos!

We loved camping at Plumtree Campground. We stayed at campsite B8 - P and it was great to have water at our site as well as an outlet to charge any electronics. The camp site was quiet and peaceful at during the night, with some moderate activity during the day. We really enjoyed picking a few blueberries from the bushes on the property and adding them to camp pancakes! The manager and staff were super helpful and their camp store had fire wood and ice, as well as anything you might have forgotten.

The campground is beautiful, shaded, the landscape is well kept and very friendly staff. Campsite is in a good location I am not sure I would stay here again for a couple reasons. 1. The campsites are too close together, it's like parking in a parking lot. Some of the campers next to us were loud and up till 1am-2am every night. So it was hard to sleep. (Not the campsites fault but because everything is right next to each other there is no noise buffer. 2. The restrooms were okay but the toilet stalls constantly had standing water on the floor because there is not good drainage for the bathroom showers.

Amazing hike in camp site! Primitive feel with the benefits of a bathhouse. We loved our stay and the hosts were amazing. Would recommend to any mature adult group. Very quiet and civil which is exactly what we needed! Plenty of wildlife! Very close to Roan and Grandfather mountain.

Best Campground Overall!

This campground was one of our favorites hands down. The scenery is incredible with blueberry bushes, LOTS of apple trees, pear trees, and the hundreds of different flowering plants. It’s was just amazing! We loved it here! Plus, if you don’t want to fish in the stocked trout pond, you could ask Jimmy for a bag of food and go down just to feed the trout! But Jed and Jennifer(Owners) were so incredible and hospital! If you need firewood, they bring it right to your camp site and no matter the time of night, if you need anything out of the camp store, they will open it up for you. And if there’s anything you need, they have it in the store. We have already booked our next stay in a couple months! Can’t wait to go back and see them again!

Plumtree Campground is a beautiful paradise. I visited Elk Park Falls, Roan Mountain, the town of Spuce Pine and Linville falls. Fresh air and peace. The owners are wonderful, helpful and genuine.

Great Time at Site H4.

Tent camping up on the ridge at Plumtree Campground was awesome! The campground staff was very helpful moving our camping gear up the ridge using a golf cart. Without that, this wouldn't be the spot for "tailgate campers". Site H4 had several large trees that allowed us to string up our sleeping hammocks and use those instead of a tent. While the other sites on the ridge are wooded, I think they probably had less pairs of trees that would work for hammocks. Great for tents though! Staff was friendly and courteous and always looking for ways to make sure their guests were comfortable.

Plumtree is a beautiful, clean, and peaceful campground with lovely landscaping and plenty of activities in the neighboring area. The owners are so inviting and accommodating. The tent area is also close enough to the stream to hear the water.

We loved tent camping at the hike in sites. The staff were always around to help out and had a motorized cart to help us haul our stuff to and from the site. Restrooms were always tidy and the camp store had everything we needed, including ice. Highly recommend staying here.

We loved our stay! The owner was awesome and great to chat with. Our site was perfect and our girls had a blast. It was nice knowing we really didn’t have to leave to entertain our kids since there was a playground and a waterfall there.

Group Tent Area with Pavilion

Beautiful and relaxing campground! The employees were friendly and very helpful. We would highly recommend this campground. It has clean bathrooms, trout fishing, a creek to play in, lots of places to ride bike, and beautiful wooded areas. We took a big group of kids with several families and we had the best time!

We absolutely love this place! We love the location…just far enough from civilization but not too far from necessities. The staff was incredible! Very attentive and incredibly helpful. The condition of the campground was clean and well kept. We will definitely be back.

Jen , Jed and Jimmy were incredible hosts . We had a rainy weekend and with an older tent we ended up choosing to leave early, they helped us get our gear packed and back down the hill before the sunset. Really pretty property , you will be close to other campers if it is a busy weekend but the waterfall hike loop onsite was really fun .
