Best for self-contained campers. There are no toilets, showers, or potable water at this Hipcamp.
**We recently sold the majority of this property to a local landowner. We have paused this site until 2026-27 in order for us to update our camping locations** Come experience private mountain meadows, on 70 acres, at the crest of the South Mountains. Camp at one of three sites, or hop around during your stay on the meadows below Bolin Knob. This entire listing is one booking, you’ll have the mountain to yourself. Views to the west of Mount Mitchell and the Blue Ridge Mountains; views to the north of Table Rock and Grandfather Mountain and to the east direct views of Silver Creek Knob. Stargaze the Milky Way at night with very little light pollution, relax by the fire, or explore the property and Bolin Knob. Hike adjacent to the property on 1,000s of acres of public land on South Mtn Game Lands. Nearby recreation: South Mtn State Park and Lake James State Park; fish/float the Catawba River in Morganton or Marion; bike the Fonta Flora trail at Lake James.This is one Booking with three potential Campsites, pick one when you arrive: A. Spring Flat: the lowest elevation and easiest to access, has clear views to the east of the South Mtns.  Listen to adjacent spring bubbling out of the mountain and wake up with a sunrise over Silver Creek Knob. This site is easy to access and best for low clearance vehicles. B. Old Homeplace: tucked into the mountain, this large, flat site has a firepit and several trees for hammocks. Clear views to the north and east.  This is the best site for ground tents. C. Windy Ridge: the highest elevation site with sunrise and sunset views.  The wind blows up here a lot!  See the sun fall across the Catawba River valley and watch the shooting stars at night.  AWD/4WD or hike to access this site. *We highly recommend AWD or 4WD vehicles, when you leave the state maintained road you'll be climbing 400 ft to the meadows. In order to access the highest elevation site 4WD is always needed. The majority of the road is packed gravel but some of the campsites are accessed through bumpy fields. You're welcome to park on the gravel and hike a short distance to the campsites.

Might be the best view I have seen East of Mississippi. It's looks like you are out West because off the long range views. Site C is the best but at night it gets breezy you will need a wind block at firepit. We brought cinder blocks which worked well. Site A you feel like you up in the mountains. Best yet!

This is the second time we’ve stayed here, and it was just as wonderful. The definition of serenity and what camping is supposed to be. I’m so sad that the land has sold, but man, what a lucky buyer. Hope it doesn’t get too developed 😔

Hands down the best campsite I’ve ever stayed at. We camped at the top of the mountain and the views were incredible. The host was very communicative and responsive. Overall, this was a 10/10 experience and we’d come back in a heartbeat

This spot was absolutely beautiful. Well maintained, clean, thorough communication. I highly recommend staying here. The ground cover is so soft that my 1 year old and I were able to be barefoot for our entire stay!

Great spot, highly recommend! Sheer luck having a week of good weather. Host is responsive and helpful. I BARELY squeezed a camper up into site B. But once there it is level, grassy, and spacious. (Heed host suggestions on any size trailer. Greater than 20 foot total frame not likely to manage tight turns on the gravel road in). Daily hike or *4WD* to C for picnic dinner, sunset, and long views (... certainly tent only there, or the very smallest of high clearance back country trailer). Nightly camp Fire and starry sky at B (clear sky permitting). Road paths and clearings around property were well kept and great for walking. A+!

By far our favorite campsite! Great view, plenty of room, and lots of solitude. Our dogs look forward to camping here and spend several days after coming home sleeping because they are so worn out from playing and exploring.

Camping at this location was a great time for my girlfriend and our 2 dogs. We chose site B since my Tesla couldn’t handle the path to site C. Be careful attempting to go that far because when the owners say you need 4x4 they are not kidding! Moreover, we really enjoyed the freedom to choose which campsite we wanted. We also appreciated how the owners could have easily listed each separate site but chose not to maintain privacy. Given the space and privacy we are heavily considering coming back in the fall with friends! Overall, it was a great time and I’d definitely recommend! One tip: there are a bunch of stores nearby so don’t feel the need to pack much before the trip as the local towns have a lot of stores to get camping materials and food

This place exceeded my expectations. Very well maintained roads and I don’t know that I’ve ever been in a place so quiet. It was exactly what I needed!!! Cell service was fine (Verizon) and I camped in B and walked up to C For those sunset views….INSANE BEAUTY!!!!! Definitely coming back when the heat starts to fade (only downfall was it was HOT🤣) …this place is HEAVEN!

This is my favorite Hipcamp EVER! The views are stunning and the privacy is unmatched. I love to camp at the site just below the summit and then walk up to the summit for sunset. We’ve been here several times and I can’t wait to go back in the fall!

William’s suite of campsites is fabulous! Access wasn’t bad at all, our Honda civic did fine getting to the campsites (although we could not drive up to C). Would highly recommend camping at site C, that’s really the winning site. Our trip was over the 4th of July and we could see 10 or so fireworks shows from site C. Thanks, William!

We had the most wonderful time at this location. We looked at all 3 sites. Such amazing picturesque views from all 3 sites. Stayed up on top at C. Definitely need a 4WD to get up there.
