The best camping in Judge C. R. Magney State Park, MN guide

Overview

About

North Shore is always the best part of any body of water, isn’t it? In any case, that rings true here! Judge C.R. Magney State Park takes up the scenic, north side of Lake Superior, only 25 miles down Highway 61 from the Canadian border.

The rocky and rugged terrain of the park gives way to some killer waterfalls, namely the unusual and grand Devil’s Kettle, where half of the Brule River disappears into a giant, black pothole. Even though there’s steep stair-stepping to get to the Kettle, plus the Upper and Lower Falls, the sight is unexplainable and totally worth it. Upstream, you’ll find incredible rapids for more experienced whitewater rafters and plenty of trout and salmon for the anglers of the group. Downstream, you can camp and give your legs a rest after all that climbin’! This shore is definitely worth staying beside, where the rushing power of these grand waters meets the dense greenery of the Minnesota woodland. Every view is guaranteed to be incredible and even better than the last!

When to go

The best time to visit Judge C.R. Magney State Park is during the summer months when the weather is warm and the park's full splendor is on display. However, be mindful of the winter season, as harsh conditions can make access difficult and some facilities may be closed.

Know before you go

  • Highway 67 is closed; follow alternative directions provided by the park for access.
  • Check the weather forecast before your visit, as conditions can change rapidly.
  • Remember to pack essentials, including water, snacks, and a first-aid kit.
  • Cell service may be limited, so plan your route and communicate with your group in advance.
