His daughter Bathsheba became the last woman executed in the United States for the murder of her husband Joshua Spooner. (There’s a book about it called Murdered by his wife, by Deborah Navas.) Want to know local eateries? For breakfasts and lunch there is The Whistle Stop diner, it was a former Boston & Albany Railroad station. Speaking of railroads, did you know that The Mass Central Rail Trail runs through Gilbertville! Rose 32, is a well known bakery that serves tea, coffee and sandwiches. Hardwick also has a winery- Hardwick Vineyard and Winery, they have all kinds of events, (find them on facebook) and, check out Lost Towns brewery- the name is a throwback to the 4 towns that were submerged to create the Quabbin Reservoir! Medicine River Pow Wow is in August here in Gilbertville, on River Run Rd. The East Quabbin Land Trust has birdwatching and fabulous views, and the Mass Central Rail Trail entrance is located here. Bike it or hike it! Quabbin Reservoir is close by for boating and fishing. There are free concerts in Grenville Park in Ware, (check for dates). Ware also has Janine’s Frostee ice cream and fast foods- and live music on weekend nights! Also check out these on line: Ragged Hill orchard and Rock House Reservation in West Brookfield, and Carter and Stevens farm in Barre. The Leicester, and Mendon movie drive-in’s. Old Sturbridge village is 30 minutes away. Lake Lashaway has a swimming area in East Brookfield, right off of Rte 9. It’s about 20 minutes from here. Lake Siog in Holland has a lovely picnic area and beach for swimming. (30 mins South from here) Is this area great or what?!

I'm about 20 minutes from Mount Wachusett and 5 minutes from the Quabbin. Lots of hiking all around, including from my farm (a nice 3 mile walk through a wildlife preserve). Worcester is about a 30 minute drive. Lot's of lakes all around with good fishing. The town of Barre has some excellent restaurants, a grocery store, hardware store, etc. This is an organic farm so you must use biodegradable products in you use my dump station. Our property is 85 very private acres with an open field surrounded by forest and open wooded area with many trails. The forest is very diverse including some old growth maples and birches, as well as hemlock and pine trees. The campsites are at the edge of the field set back into the woods. I have recently added sand and gravel to improve drainage since the heavy rain we have had last year. We have a portable composting toilet outhouse and a hot outdoor shower. Feel free to explore all of the trails on foot or mountain bike. You may see some turkeys or deer out there. There is a small pond with lots of frogs and salamanders near the camping area, and a few seasonal streams on the property. You can hike a one mile loop on our newest trail. It is medium difficulty because of the hillside it is built on so hiking boots are recommended unless you are on a mountain bike. Rock walls built in the mid 1800s circle the property almost entirely so the borders are easy to see. The Deerfield river is a few miles away where you can fish for trout or go for a swim or kayak. The Connecticut river and the green river are about 15 minutes away as well. We have tubes, a canoe, and a kayak that are available to rent for some floating! Historic Deerfield village and Yankee Candle store and factory are about 10 minutes away. We are about 20 minutes from Northampton and Amherst.

The forest hut is a screened in platform that is lovely for camping on a warm summer's night. It has large windows and screens to keep out the bugs while enjoying a cool mountain breeze. There is a newly built composting toilet on site and small fire pit. This is not a cabin, no electricity, running water or plumbing. It is not well suited for winter camping unless you’re well equipped. BYO gear as there is not mattress or blankets in the shelter. We have a small farm store near the road filled with herbal teas, tinctures, gifts, chicken eggs, soaps, maple syrup and ghee. Take a swim in the Ashfield lake 1 mile away or visit the enchanting Chapel Falls on Trustees land just down the road in Williamsburg. Sweet Birch Herbals is a community herbal company offering workshops, apprenticeships, wellness consultations and hand crafted products including Full Moon Ghee. We grow organic herbs and ethically forage plants for medicine. Request a farm tour, herbalism class or any of our products for your stay here. What stands out to me is the amazing scenery and simplicity, this truly is rustic camping at its finest wether you’re in a tent, RV or car camping. This is my second time here and Im already planning another trip. The owners are fantastic with communication and I feel 100% safe here. Lots of log firewood is provided along with a pit and a newer picnic table. A kettle & some utensils are on site as well, if needed. Highly recommended. The owls hooting at night is peaceful and if it’s a clear sky, look up. The stars are so bright & clear due to no light pollution.

Weekend Trip to Winimusett Farm
A friend and I stayed here over the weekend in mid-November. We enjoyed our trip, the cabin is cozy, and Misty was very communicative and helpful! The directions were thorough, and we had no problem using the cabin. Outside temperature was ~28-45°F, but the wood stove was very effective and the cabin became very toasty. One thing to note is that the solar-powered battery banks had little charge. The string lights only worked for 20 minutes on our first night, and their battery banks did not recharge the next day. The large solar-powered battery bank that powered the lamp in the corner had only about 6 hours of charge. We're guessing that the weak fall sun, combined with cloudy conditions, meant these battery banks didn't fully charge. This might be something to consider when packing for a fall/winter trip. We're glad we brought flashlights, a rechargeable lamp, and some pillar candles. We also brought our own kitchen supplies; not sure what to expect, but there were plenty of utensils, cookware, etc., even if we hadn't brought our own. The floor needed a little sweep when we arrived, but everything else was clean. Overall, we enjoyed our stay!

Mary is an exceptional host—warm, thoughtful, and genuinely invested in creating a magical experience for her guests. Thank you, Mary, for opening your beautiful space to us! One of the absolute highlights of our stay was the pizza oven. It was such a hit—easy to use, incredibly fun, and the perfect activity to bring everyone together. We made some truly delicious creations and shared plenty of laughs around it. We also loved the variety of sleeping options throughout the property. With so many different configurations, everyone in our group found a cozy, comfortable place to settle in. It made the whole weekend feel relaxed, flexible, and tailored to us. We’re already talking about coming back. Salamander Hollow is a gem!

Awesome place, 10/10. My friend and I had a great night at the cabin. Huge property. Cabin is up on the hill. Well out-fitted. Great big open space down below. The hill is non-trivial, but Eric helped us bring up some of our gear in his tractor. Eric was very friendly, and Misty (with whom I communicated with messaging) was also very friendly and responsive. This was my first experience with HipCamp and it was excellent. Highly recomment.

I stayed in the island for four nights and had an incredible time. It is truly a magical spot. There is something special about paddling out and arriving on a small piece of ground where you are only one there - a sort of threshold. The house (while it is uninsulated and “rough” around the edges, “shack” does not do it justice) was clean, inviting, and thoughtfully stocked. I hope to return soon. And I definitely recommend!

Cynthia is an amazing human and great conversation! Her farm is an amazing property. Absolutely worth stepping foot on. I slept better here than I have in a very long time. Great views all around. Was in the area to visit a family member in Amherst. This was a welcome place to camp at the end of a few busy, long days. Didn't get to experience and enjoy the property as much as I'd hoped (didn't have enough time during my days there). However, I'll gladly book this Hipcamp again! Cynthia greeted me upon arrival, and showed me where the bathroom was (it's a nice walk through a very well kept horse barn). She even turned on the bathroom heater before I got there (my stay was during fall nights that got a bit cold). I car camped in an SUV and had no problem finding a level spot to park and set-up my sleeping area for the night. Lighting at night on the property felt safe and bright...but not TOO bright.

It was nice to have a fire pit and picnic bench available to use, and our neighbors were a fair distance away for a bit of privacy. Very quiet and peaceful there, and conveniently located if you’re planning to go to apple fest at wachusett mountain.
