IMPORTANT NOTIFICATION: The river edge erosion wall construction is complete. The area is being prepared to have additional river sites added sometime in 2026 depending on vegetation growth. The entire Beach (R3 & R4) will be closed to Campers starting October 1. This is due to hunting season starting. Campsites in the main campground will be still available, but guests are not allowed on the lower 40. Contact Cal or check our Facebook page and web site for more information. The campground and rental house will open about May 15, each year. The English Pale Campground is located along the Black River in Jackson County, 1 mile west of the Village of Melrose. The entire property only allows guests and occupants who are 21 or older. Sites/house can be booked 6 months in advance. The main campground is 70 feet above the river. We have 5 rustic (no hook-ups) RV/Travel Trailer/Tent sites, a fully furnished “Manor” House, a travel trailer as well as 2 rustic beach sites that are located along the river. The property is a total of 70 acres, which includes the 4+ acre beach, a mile of river front and trails through the woods that connect them all. The English Pale opened in 2021 and is a developing property. In late summer of 2025 an erosion wall was built along the Black River. This included clearing of a section of the forest, building a gravel access road and an riprap river wall to prevent further erosion. Since 2016 over 60 feet of the riverbank has washed away. Our property offers a reasonable expectation of privacy and we do not offer day passes as our target guests are campers. We are an adult only property, but not a nudist campground, as that is not our central theme. We do not prohibit our guests from nudity for the purpose of sunbathing on the beach, campsites or sundeck, but nudity is not allowed in general common areas. Part of our nature is allowing discreet nudity for tanning purposes. While we target couples for time together, singles and groups are welcome. As stated in every other review, the camping spot is very scenic, nature filled and beautiful. Gregory is great as a host as he let us have our privacy, but checked in as we were driving or walking by. Just a note to get to the site: when you pull in the driveway, turn left and drive in front of the house. Then right after the house take a right and that trail leads you back into the woods by the river. I think he has a map that works great. Lacrosse and Lake Crescent are not far from this site if you wanna make a trip into town. The site itself is very open no backing up as needed. Just pull in where you wanna be. Big enough for a couple of campers and tents.

A Phenomenally Beautiful Campsite with a lot of Area to Set up your Camp. The Streams were Gorgeous and Had Beautiful Sunsets. Gregory Drove to our Campsite in the early morning, waking us up, to Advise my Husband and Myself of the Rising Waters and the Next Huge Storm Surge coming our way! This is Unheard of, That A Man not only Checked out his Land, he Informed us of the Big Storms and Concerning Weather On the Front. Also, Delivered our Farm Fresh Eggs to our Campsite! Highly recommended!

Long story short: great site, great host, 100% recommend. BIG site. Lots of room for either multiple tents or just choosing a perfect location for a single tent. Very level ground as well. The trout stream is small, but very fishable. I had a blast fly fishing the water right at the campsite, as well as the mile of public water upstream of the site. The site is private, but I wouldn’t call it “secluded”. There are a couple other houses and a main road nearby. I would compare the general noise level similar to what you’d find in a suburban neighborhood. In my opinion, this is actually more acceptable than what I’ve found in popular state park campgrounds, which often have “party noise” later into the night, and much closer neighbors making noise. Once the sun goes down, this site is quiet and sleep came easy. I opted to have an early check in time as well as a dozen fresh eggs from the camp host’s chickens and ducks. I had fresh duck eggs for breakfast for the first time…they were great! The camp host couldn’t have been better. Just a regular guy that didn’t interfere with my stay at all. Communication through the app was very good and really all that was needed. I did speak with him briefly in person and it was a pleasant conversation.

Fantastic place! Very clean, and secluded but town is just a few minutes’ drive if needed. Sleeping next to the stream was amazing and you can see tons of trout swimming in the stream. Gorgeous views as well. Appreciate the firewood, fireplace, water spigot and dumpster. Highly recommend!

Completely relaxed and sleeping after a day of play on the beach and hiking up and down.

My dog and I arrived pulling our teardrop to spend three absolutely wonderful days and nights. We came for the dark skies to watch the meteor showers. We did see some burning re-entry of some space junk. Truly dark-sky areas are very special to me. This place is one of those places. The new outdoor shower and sink area are just the best. Nothing better than a shower after spending the day playing on the beach and in the Black River. This is truly a special spot. I’m a kayaker and the Black River is a great waterway for paddling or just floating. Cal is a wonderful host who seems to be always available even though I know he’s got a lot of stuff “on the stove.” The improvements he is making are just going to heighten the camping experience for future guests. Put this place on your favorite Hipcamp destination list. ❤️

What a great camp. It's as good as all the reviews say. Friendly host with great directions and communication. Eggs and firewood adds on well worth the price. Private camp by a stream with trails and wildlife. Perfect. Will definitely be staying again.

Gregory has a wonderful spot here. Easy to find then a nice short path back to the clearing by the stream. Lots of room to find your ideal spot as well as room for activities like Frisbee or fetch. Our dogs had a great time walking through the stream and on the walking trails. Gregory does have option to purchase firewood bundles right on site. Look forward to trying this again.

I absolutely love this place. B14 is nice, large, pull-through site with a very level gravel bed to park on. It's got a lot of shade and looks out into an untamed wooded valley. The bird song and croaking frogs provided music constantly. The beach, though: that is heaven! Lots of soft sand and enough privacy to allow nude sunbathing, which I highly recommend. The river is shallow with a clean, sandy bottom, and it felt delightful after heating my skin the sun. I would live here if I could!
