30 minutes from Washington, DC, nestled within winding scenic roads, a small sign for a narrow one-lane bridge marks the hidden entrance to our 4-acre manicured forest Hideaway. Find an idyllic weathered two-story barn with electrical outlets, a guest bed, a fire circle, hot pepper gardens with rare and super-hot varietals decorating the porch with outdoor table and last-minute BBQ-ing supplies for sale, and, if you ask politely, a hot shower (or cold if we’re out of heating fuel). Depending on site or access, you may be unwinding in the trees, or under the shelter of the barn, gazing out through the large double bay doors. As the moon rises high above the tree tops, lightning bugs emerge and twinkle in the night air, blending the bounds of earth and the starry skies.  The next morning enjoy the sounds of bird song so diverse and chatty you’re likely wonder like I did if you were awakening in a tropical jungle, and not the NoVAn outskirts of Washington, DC. Later in the afternoon, see the Corvids and Falcons gracing skies, or rough and tumbling for territory within the copious canopy above, occasionally crashing tree branches in their battles. Some weekdays or weekends, a visitor may sight the OG Wizards of Langley (Our Local Robotics / UAS Club in Great Falls) with their drones, operating under an FCC Club license, duking it out in the sky and signal space in the big backyard which is delightfully just within a number of fly zone permissions, despite that across the street you’ll find the edge of the Zone 1 RED Zone of Washington DC. Folks with similar hobbies must check in 14 days in advance with Proof of Licensing, and Writ of Intent for flying, and the hosts will get back with approval or request for modification. As the day fades to dusk, families of deer graze and meander across the lawns, and at the first sound of people high tail it into the surrounding forested hills, flashing their white tails as they leap across the 5’ ravine at the edge of The Hideaway’s soft and grassy forest camp grounds. Lodgers: One guest bathroom with a standing-room only shower provides hot water, and basic toiletries to lodging guests. In case of weather, the 4 12-foot high bay doors to the barn can be opened to provide shelter from the rain without compromising access and view to the outdoors. Campers: To remain within compliance of HipCamp's rules, you must bring your own camp toilet: pack in and pack out. We are working on better options, such as renting a Port-a-Potty, so, please mind our dust and remember that we expect your compliance, too. Around Town: Local attractions include gorgeous Night Skies Tours hosted by Analemma Society and FFxC0 Parks & Rec. Observatory Park is a roll-top roof Observatory with 4 telescopes, and ample fields for viewing night skies in the Great Falls MPA-193 Region’s International Dark Skies Designated Urban Night Sky Zone. We are within the only one in the Washington DC region, fancy that. A quick visit to The Villages of Great Falls opens a courtyard with Artist's Studios, incredibly smells of local restaurants representing the many villages that locals are united to in their walks of life. Guidebooks for a busy weekend calendar across Summer Solstice are available at the many businesses. At Oliver's Corner, there is a butcher open until 5pm. The Safeway is 7 minutes away, and closes at 9pm. Along Georgetown Pike & Beach Mill Rd Past Springvale heading west, many pastoral offerings include Horseback Riding & Training retreats, gorgeous winding country roads, and a cozy French Alsatian Bistro with outdoor dining, named Jacques Brasserie.

The Dragon Inn Clearings

This privately owned large home is tucked away on 7+ acres wooded area in scenic semi-secluded neighborhood in La Plata, Charles County. Charles County was created in 1658 by an Order in Council. There was also an earlier Charles County from 1650 to 1653, sometimes referred to in historic documents as Old Charles County. In April 1865, John Wilkes Booth made his escape through Charles County after shooting President Abraham Lincoln. He was on his way to Virginia. John Wilkes Booth fled to southern Maryland, toward Zekiah Swamp. Booth entered the swamp after treatment by Dr. Samuel Mudd for the broken leg he suffered escaping Fords Theater. A black tobacco farmer guided Booth and his co-conspirator David Herold through the swamp to the home of a Confederate sympathizer, Samuel Cox. Cox led Booth and Herold to Thomas A. Jones who helped them the rest of the way through the Zekiah Swamp and across the Potomac River to Virginia. In 1926, a tornado ripped through the county leaving 17 dead (including 13 schoolchildren) and on April 28, 2002, another tornado destroyed much of downtown La Plata. In its path of destruction was our location now known as THE DRAGON INN, the house was completely torn down to its foundation and rebuild in 2003. You can see a marker stone in the brick wall near the garage. This county also has several properties on the National Register of Historic Places. Among them are Green Park and Pleasant Hill, home of the Green and Spalding Families. The Dragon Inn and its all natural wooded backyard, also known as Zekiah Swamp, is part of the Potomac River basin in Charles County, Maryland. The swamp is 21 miles (34 km) of braided stream stretching the length of Charles County and is a tributary of the Potomac River. It sits at an elevation of three feet 90.91 m) and 450 acres (180 ha) of its southern end is protected as the Zekiah Swamp Natural Environment Area. Although the Zekiah Swamp Natural Environment Area is primarily owned by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, it isn't managed for recreation. As a result, there are no paved public access roads, parking areas, or scenic overlooks. Nor are there marked or developed trails, picnic areas, campsites, or visitor's centers. Nonetheless, a limited level of recreational use is still possible. In connection with its Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail system, the U.S. National Park Service notes that access is possible by way of the intersection of U.S. Highway 301 and SR 234 (Budds Creek Road). Traveling east from that point on SR 234, one comes to Penn's Hill Road/Allen’s Fresh Road. Following Allen's Fresh Road south at mile 23.2, there is a dirt road on the west side that leads through the swamp and woods to Allen's Fresh Run of the Wicomico River. This is suitable for driving or walking. Other sight-seeing or photo opportunities are possible with brief stops along the shoulder of SR 234 where it passes through the Natural Environment Area. Similar possibilities exist to the north on SR 6 (Charles Street) that runs between La Plata and Charlotte Hall. If you are feeling adventurous you can explore some paths, clearings and bamboo fields leading to a small creek flowing into the Zekiah Swamp Run directly from our backyard! PLEASE READ THE ENTIRE DESCRIPTION BEFORE BOOKING... 30 acres of mostly reclaimed farmland. We are located where Glade Creek flows into the Monocacy River. There is evidence of civil war activity here and the old river ford is on our property. Creek and river access make this a beautiful, peaceful place that is full of life. The energy here is overwhelmingly positive. Our house was built in the 1850s and the neighboring farm was built shortly after—lots of history on this property. You will be able to camp right next to Glade Creek which is always cool, clean, and refreshing. Our goal with opening the land up for camping is to eventually phase out commercial farming on the property and transform it into woodlands using native plants and trees. We've already started by planting hundreds of native tree species along the creek and river banks. Each camper gets us closer to that goal! Thanks for your support! We hold space for you at our Leoni Island Private Water Front site and our secluded Forest Tree Star Site There are over 100 acres you can explore at your leisure. It will truly feel like you are walking through the forest. Our Tree Star Site is very easy to access with string lights on the trees to enhance your camping experience. The main road leads directly to the Leoni Island waterfront site where you set up your chairs, play music, and even catch a fish! Surrounded by trees, Treestar provides multiple areas were a group of friends or the lone explorer can set up for the night. TreeStar is a great location for Tent Campers and Vehicle Campers. Set up your tent on an open plot or pull your truck or camper directly to the site. Once night settles in don’t forget to look up and gaze at the stars that appear just through the rising treetops. If it’s a cloudy night or you're looking for additional ambiance, you have the option to turn on the battery powered string lights that have been set up throughout the campsite. As an added touch, this time of year you’ll also find seasonal decorations hung through out the trees. This set up gives you the option to glow up the area as a finishing touch with the stars and campfires. Located on over 50 acres of forested unpopulated land campers have the opportunity to roam the campgrounds to the right of the main trail. While exploring you could hike down and visit the original barns to the property, catch a glimpse of the deer living on the property, and hit the main trail that leads down to... Leoni Island!!! our waterfront campsite which has become a Maryland favorite with its amazing view, moving waters. perfect sunsets, some things you just cant put into words. Beautiful spot on the Shenandoah River....you will see eagles, deer, ospreys, beaver and numerous other critters. Great fishing, boating and swimming not to mention the views. Lots of local cuisine and pubs. Flea markets and BBQ on the roadside and for those who dare the casino and horse racing!!!... Each site has a picnic table, firepit and pavilion canopies for creature comfort. We do have firewood available along with boat rentals. All boat rentals and firewood are cash only. Please limit glass containers.

Learn more about this land: 45 acre Historic farm, several sites to choose from depending on adventure wanderlust (including a 4WD drive site). Located on private gravel lane, approximately 1/2 mile off county road. Either corn or soybeans with a woods backdrop. Secluded and private, yet 25 minutes to downtown Annapolis, 10 minutes to the Bay, great for cycling, paddleboarding, kayaking all 10/15 minutes from farm. Lots of great waterfront restaurants close by as well. DC 45 minutes, Baltimore 1 hour. Have a couple of tent/RV sites depending on interest. For those with 4WD and an off-road camper/trailer/tent have a site down a small hill, travel along a logging road and camp by a small stream or a giant poplar. Suitable during dry conditions and not responsible for damage to vehicle or camper. Great spot for those who truly want to be in the woods off the beaten path, site takes about 5 minutes to reach due to low speed access.
