The atmosphere is calming and peaceful, away from any hustle and hustle of tourism. Bears Den is less than an hour from any popular attraction in the area, including Mt Rushmore and the Crazy Horse Memorial. Available are some canvas tents, set up like a bedroom at home. Also available is a small cabin, as well as sites to set up your own tent. I was able to use my hammock, with a few trees close enough to do so, in my tent site. Tammy is very warm and welcoming Hostess. She'll do anything within her power to make you feel more comfortable. She helped make my South Dakota visit the best I could imagine.

1 night at Bear Den Cabins & Camp

Incredible place to stay at. It's very apparent how much love Tammy puts into the space. 10/10 would recommend. Showers and bathrooms were spotless. Even though we didn't use them, the microwave and ice in the kitchen could be super nice to have for other campers.

2 nights at Horse Creek Resort

We really enjoyed our experience at Horse Creek. We used a tent site for our dry teardrop trailer on the opposite side of the creek. The adventure began as we drove through the creek to get to the other side. It made my Jeep feel like, well, a Jeep. But I won't tell it that we could have gone through with any car, SUV, or truck. The creek is pretty slow and shallow, so it doesn't require a four wheel drive vehicle. Then, we got to pick our site from a dozen or so, most right along the creek side. And get this: there were NO MOSQUITOES, or any other bugs for that matter (at least in mid to late June). The grass was nicely cut and the toilets and showers were clean and pretty nice for a camp bathhouse. The location was also a big plus as we were close to Hill City and the Mickelson Bike Trail, which was why we were there. Oh, you will also find the setting of it all to be gorgeous! We got some rain while there, but it didn't dampen our enthusiasm for this campground. While others were charging over $80 a night, we spent two nights at Horse Creek for less than half of that.

1 night at Plenty Star Ranch Retreat

We had a great stay at Plenty Star Ranch Retreat. Everything was as we expected. The sleeping cabin, shower facility, and restroom were all neat, tidy, and clean. The overall setting was tranquil with beautiful views of the surrounding valley. This was one of our stops on a multi-day bicycling trip along the Mickelson Trail and it worked perfectly for us.

I have camped a lot but this was the best campsite I have ever stayed at. The location was gorgeous and was in perfect proximity to the Badlands, Wind Cave, Custer, and Mount Rushmore. There were so many amazing amenities included: showers (that were spotless), grills, gazebos, lawn games etc. We brought our own tent but Tammy also offers cabins and platform canvas tents which we hope to try in the future. 10/10 would recommend to anyone and everyone. This made us hate all of our other camping spots on our trip.

Highlights *Located between historic Crook City and Whitewood, with local amenities a mile away. *Both sheltered and secluded, our camping area is protected by many mighty oak trees; nestled away from wind and local light pollution, this is the perfect spot for stargazing and catching a glimpse of our adorable lightning bug friends. *Just 2 miles from National Forest Access and trails, you can find yourself getting lost in the beautiful trees and scenery of the Black Hills to include views of Bear Butte, Whitewood Peak and many more! Amenities *Tent sites: there are many locations suitable for pitching a tent, although creek side is not recommended due to unpredictable rising water levels, weather dependent. Otherwise, find the perfect spot for your needs! *If you want the experience of tent camping but didn’t bring a tent along, we have you covered! We have a 2 person tent equipped with cozy bedding and pillows, ready for a good nights sleep. *Charging station on site: our charging station is solar powered and can provide power to any device that uses a USB charging port. This is located behind the blue tent in a small box labeled “Charging Station.” *6 gallon container of potable water available in camp with a fresh well water tap available a short distance away. *On site waste disposal: We have a garbage bin located near the entrance gate. Opportunities include hiking, biking, OHV and horseback riding. Stargazing and rockhounding abound. You can access the Mickelson Bike Trail at the end of road. Plenty of room for vehicle parking on property. Site can accommodate RV unit up to 60 feet. Yard games. Only one campsite, you will be the only camper. Is adjacent to but private from owner's house. Electric hookup with 20 amp extension cord (this will not power an AC). Water fill available from private well. No sewer hookup. Dump stations available in town. There is 1/3 mile of gravel on Sunset Lane to reach property. One week maximum stay. Enjoy the City of Custer with its many restaurants and shops. Bike, hike or drive the 2 miles into town. Many hiking trails and Forest Service roads within minutes. Enjoy watching small aircraft at the nearby municipal airport. Hot air balloons can often be seen in the early morning. Stargaze at night. Fish or swim in nearby Custer State Park.
