Large, graveled spot for tents or two vehicles with excellent view for miles and miles and night star gazing. Primitive outhouse. Juniper forest with sage brush... basically high desert vegetation. We only allow one reservation per night. You can arrange vehicles or tents to not be in view or block any view from house way above. 320 acres to hike and roam. Mitchell is 10 miles away with well stocked grocery and feed store, restaurants, small brewery, and tire shop. We give directions fairly quickly. Road is wide, but steep at top. 4 wheel drive is recommended. Very close to the Painted Hills Unit of the John Day Fossil Beds National monument, Ochoco National Forest is seven miles. John Day River for swimming, rafting about 20 minutes. If you can book, it means you can drive on up with out contacting us. As you drive in if at night, you will see a light on the outhouse.

There is bike riding, boating, fishing, hiking, ATV riding, swimming, kayaking, lounging and enjoying nature. When you arrive just park in your site. We have 30-amp service but no RV septic hookup. Great camping spot! We showed up on a whim, booked a site, and had a nice night camping! The stars are mind blowing. The area is pretty sandy though, so be prepared for some cleanup afterwards. There was also a verrrry friendly kitty that came to say hi (and tried to go home with us) which added some fun to the evening.

This was our second time staying here. We really appreciate the generous check in time (1pm) because we can drop our trailer and easily get in a hike, etc instead of losing a day. Easy access to 97 and we were left to ourselves. It’s a big area where you can easily position your equipment to maximize privacy- though we only saw 2 vehicles drive by the whole time we were there. We will be back!

Easy to find. The view of the canal is amazing! If you pull in nose first, you'll have a better view out the side door of your rig, and a bit more privacy. You are parked right near a road that is only busy at rush hour times, it seems like. The road noise wasn't too bad. Michelle's property is beautiful. Michele herself is a very lovely person to talk to. We met 2 of her children as well. Very nice kids. If you have your pup along, go to Pine Nursery Park. It's not far away and their dog park is awesome.

Great space in town. There are houses around on large properties and the RV space is right on the road. The road was busy at times but not bad, and still felt private. Great Hipcamp! The pictures show what you actually get! The camp was very clean and well maintained! There were tons of activities and amenities! Would be a great place to take the family camping! We had the whole campground to ourselves, it was very quiet and relaxing. We had our two dogs with us and it was very accommodating for them too! The campground cat even came for a few visits! You can tell that the hosts take a lot of pride in their campground and work hard to make it a safe place for all!

Site is well-configured for privacy while also enabling community space. Not too far from Bend, but far enough to be quiet and have very clear night skies free from light pollution (excellent views of the Milky Way). Main gravel road is well-kept and portable toilet was set up with hand soap and water for hand washing. The site kitties are cute and playful, but I would caution against letting them snuggle up too tightly. One of them got a bit excited and left scents (from glands) on our sleeping bags, and that forced us to abandon open air sleeping for tent camping.

Couple of cool little trails with views. Cactus Ridge literally has tiny cacti on the ground. Watch your dogs' paws!

Weekend Trip to Back Side of Painted Hills Camping

Loved this private spot perched high with views of the desert hills. It helped to have a more rugged vehicle to handle the steep rough road. Sunrise was gorgeous and the stargazing at night was incredible. We saw shooting stars across the Milky Way! We could occasionally see and hear the tenants at the house further up the hill (only when they were outside on the deck), but they were far enough away that it never felt intrusive. Otherwise, camp was super quiet and it felt like we had the WHOLE place to ourselves. Loved the trails on the property. The only bummer was that there were a lot of pokies that kept getting stuck in our dogs' paws which kept us from exploring more. So if you bring dogs, you may want to put booties on them. Loved the proximity to Painted Hills. This site is a total high desert gem and we will definitely be back!
