Back to the basics, come and experience Tar River Life’s primitive camping on the Tar River.
Enjoy being on the river and listening to slow running sound of the Tar River. Bring your own tent or rent one of ours. You can drive your vehicle to all of our campsites.
The drive to camp is about 1/2 miles. Each site includes a fire pit, wood and trash bin. Cook your own meals or try and catch your own fish from the river. Campsites can be secluded or grouped.
Each site comes with a picnic table, 1 bundle of wood and trash can. Stay for a night or longer period of time, come and enjoy the outdoors with us. We have lots of walking trails, fishing access, wildlife, kayaking and tubing (must be purchased through us). 2WD vehicles are ok except during wet conditions.
There is also the Vollmer Farm, with seasonal produce a Full Coffee Shop with breakfast goodies and baked goods and not to mention their fabulous ice cream. They have goods from around NC including, eggs, honey, meats, beers, wine and more. There is a grocery store (Food Lion) about 15 minutes away. So you can stock up on supplies on your way to your next adventure.

This is a very cute, fun little homestead farm. I was able to meet the beautiful family who run it, and all were very kind & helpful. I paid for the farm tour, which was all about the animals: I got to meet & feed some quite fancy chickens, love on their beautiful dog, see adorable little miniature goats & sheep, and get kisses from the highland cow. I learned that the farm was just recently opened up for camping, and is being expanded to include an RV site as well. I have wanted to open a farm sanctuary for years, so learning about the layout and operations was very inspiring. Would definitely return!

Tips for future guests:
*bring ear plugs, as the nearby road is small but moderately busy
*If you have a small camper van, message to ask if it's okay. The description made me think it wouldn't work, but they were very accommodating!
*If staying at campsite, the walk to the restroom is pretty long. Consider bringing an alternative.
*Look for a house, not a farm (I almost stopped at the farm next door bc I was looking for wide pastures, but the animals are in the back so you'll just see the house at first). The sign is very helpful!
*Be mindful of which driveway you're told to turn into. There are 3, but 2 are very close together.

Beautiful land! The pastures are so peaceful. Plenty of shade. 👐 upon arrival The owners son took us around the entire farm and gave us a tour. The star of the show was the horse. Who was admittedly a bit sketched out by us at first. Highly recommend checking it out. ALSO.... random ..but the porta potty provided for guests is hands down the cleanest one ive ever entered 🤣 it was nice. Lol

We had a wonderful time camping as a family with our dogs at Ross’s place! He was kind, attentive, and accommodating, even the regulars who went to the site to find fossils and gold were so kind. Everyone was willing to help us, show us tips and tricks, and went out of their way to make sure we had everything we needed and could enjoy our stay. If you want a unique experience with family and some cool little treasures to take home and remember it by I would highly recommend! If you are close enough I really would recommend even just stopping by there for a day trip even to take part in just the fun experiences they offer!

We checked in after dark, so we didn’t get to see much of the property when we arrived, but we were up for sunrise the next morning and it was very pretty and peaceful. We were just passing through, so we didn’t have much time to enjoy the property beyond our overnight stay.
It was quiet, and we seemed to be the only campers there that night. The sites don’t feel especially private from one another, so that may be different if other campers are staying at the same time.
We did see a dog roaming around the property in the morning, so just a heads-up for anyone traveling with dogs to keep yours leashed if they aren’t comfortable with other dogs. There is also quite a bit of tall grass rather than closely mowed areas, so I’d recommend wearing high socks or pants when walking around.
Overall, a peaceful and pretty place to stop for the night.

1 night at The Homestead At Little Creek
My husband and I very much enjoyed our overnight stay in the bell tent at Megan's little farm! We absolutely loved our own little personal guard dog who even slept at the entry of our tent most of the night making us feel extra safe. It rained a bit overnight, but no issues in the tent. It was incredibly roomy and kept fairly cool on its own after the sun went down, and bugs weren't too bad inside the tent.
We also loved our morning farm tour to see the chickens, goats, highland cow, and sheep! The goats were so friendly and loving all the pats. The chickens also hung out with us free range by our camp area which was refreshing. Megan and her family are all very lovely hosts and we felt very welcomed.
We're glad we made the stop here on our mini road trip while visiting the states from Australia! Highly recommend. :)

Drive from Amphitheatre was about 25 minutes on backroads. Pay attention to the host tour upon arrival. We didn't have any problems, but it could be challenging to navigate the property if you aren't alert.

Great shaded sites by the water for kayak/fishing. Felt private, with our own fire pit, picnic table and private commode. Nikki and Mann were gracious hosts and were super friendly and welcoming. Local farm/market store was very close drive to grab water. 20L can was enough for 2 people for 2 days. Stayed 3 nights.

We felt very comfortable and safe! The site was very level and spacious, with electric and water. Morning shade provided a nice break from the sun. There's a pretty lake and a dock to fish from, although we were in the area to visit friends so didn't spend time there, but the night before we left there were torrential downpours and we were so glad to be in a place that was high and no chance of flooding!
