My wife and I moved to the area, from Boone, in the spring of 2014.
Our dream was to own a house, preferably a cabin, on top of a mountain with long range views and a gradual winding road to the top.
Living in Boone, this dream was definitely out of reach.
When we began our search for a new home in the Asheville area, we discovered that the more affordable homes were in fact on the mountains.
Perfect!
In general I always have a pretty positive outlook on what’s possible, however, I was skeptical that we would ever find our dream home.
As Jeannie began her Zillow browsing adventures, one particular cabin with acreage,
that was outside of our budget continued to pop up.
Jeannie would delete it and then it would come back.
At some point the price began to drop, and drop, and drop.
On our way back into town one weekend after attending a wedding, I convinced Jeannie to drive by the cabin
just because we had the time.
Immediately we fell in love and reached out to our realtor buddy.
It was more of a shot in the dark but it couldn’t hurt, right?
We held our breath for the next month totally expecting someone to get it under contract before us or the sellers not accepting our offer.
It had already been reduced significantly so we knew our chances of a lowball offer were slim.
We offered the most that we could get a loan for.
They accepted!
I still get anxious thinking back to that month, October 2014.
Many years and two children later, here we are, just as excited everyday to make the long trek up our mountain as we were that August of 2014, and now we are happy to offer a similar experience to you, without having to buy the place.

Pitch your tent in the grass on the tip top of the mountain or park your camper in the flat gravel spot with a fire pit just below the top with beautiful views overlooking Cane Creek. In the fall and winter enjoy 360 degree views and in the summer enjoy the shade and cool breeze while relaxing & snacking on wild wine berries and black raspberries. What you will not find is light pollution, traffic, and a desire to leave the mountain. Fall asleep to the calls of the hoot owl and wake up to the knocking of the wood pecker.
If & when you decide to explore the area, be sure to checkout Hickory Nut Gap farm just 7.9 miles away & Whistle Hop Brewery 7.7 miles away. Turgua brewery just down on Cane Creek road is only 6.2 miles from camp. Cane Creek Valley Farm as well as the Cane Creek Community swimming pool is also at the base of camp just in case the kids need a dip of ice cream or a dip in the pool. Justus Apple Orchard is only 10 miles down the mountain towards Hendersonville. We love taking our kids there.
We are only 15 miles from downtown Asheville & Hendersonville, and 22 miles from Lake Lure. The site backs up to over 100 acres of forest for a truly wilderness feel just outside of town.

You can cool off in the river or check out the surrounding Pisgah National Forest. Dogs on leashes are welcome and owner is responsible for cleaning up after pet.
The farm provides a portable toilet but no other amenities. Campfires may be restricted, so check local regulations. This is a working farm, so please be respectful of the crops and workers and keep dogs on leashes. Fishing is NOT allowed on the river unless you have booked a trip with one of our guides. Please note, if it’s rainy the roads will be muddy and 4-wheel-drive vehicles are the best option.
Head 4 miles east to the town of Mills River for restaurants, stores, and services. You can find hiking, biking, and horseback-riding trails within a short bike or car ride in Pisgah National Forest. Chimney Rock State Park is 25 miles east and offers panoramic views of the surrounding mountain scenery. Or perhaps go for a drive on the Blue Ridge Parkway.

We have 3 very private campsites. "Chanterelle" campsite has a fire ring, picnic table, pit latrine, and accommodates up to 6 people. "Fern" is our 3 sided A-frame shelter that comfortably sleeps 4 people. It has as a fire ring, picnic table, and its own pit latrine. There is a spring a few yards up the gravel road from Fern. The third site, "Big Rock" is a group site accommodating up to 16 people and is located at the top of the property, offering mountaintop views. Must have V6 or 4WD to access. Big Rock has a fire ring, 2 picnic tables, and its own pit latrine.
A seasonal spring (Oct-July) is available on the property, drink at your own risk. There is also a small stream, Piney Branch, that runs year round (see map). There are three marked hiking trails. Please use the map to stay on property.
Green Haven is centrally located 20 minutes between Brevard and Hendersonville. DuPont State Forest is 25 minutes away and it includes hiking, mountain biking, and waterfalls. Boaters will find the French Broad River, Horseshoe Bend, river access less than 10 minutes. More mountain biking at Ride Kanuga and Ride Rock Creek downhill mountain bike park 15 minutes away. The 7 mile paved Ecusta Trail from Horseshoe to Hendersonville is open, several miles away. Nearby breweries include Mills River Brewery and Bold Rock Cidery 15 minutes away.

We had a phenomenal time, everything was perfect. We slept up in the loft and the mattress was cozy. We spent some time exploring the property and look forward to coming back in the fall to stay at the hilltop site, it’s got a phenomenal view! If you’re looking for a place to crash while biking and exploring DuPont, this is the spot! Look forward to returning. The description that the host sent was on point. No issues on that front and thought it was really, really cool that they provided firewood!

This was a great set up! Clean, plenty of privacy. Both the A frame and outhouse were in great condition. We appreciated the firewood provided and the detailed instructions on how to get there. Plus we didn’t have to worry about a tent during the rainstorm at night…got to listen to rain on a tin roof instead. Would definitely come back and will be recommending to others.

We had a great time staying here! The hosts seem to have thought about everything you might need. The shower is every bit as good as other reviewers have mentioned. We had four children with us so we had planned for two to sleep in a tent to give us more space (and to give them more adventure!), which we did, though there is plenty of room in the cabin for both the queen floor bed and for people to sleep on the sofa.
The cabin is astonishingly well equipped with high quality supplies and with everything you need from skewers and s'mores supplies to hot tub towels!
The hosts were by far the best hosts we've ever had either at a hip camp or at an Airbnb. They were quick to respond to everything from our silly questions to minor issues - they were around in minutes to replace an empty gas canister on the grill or to change the hot tub temperature for us.
One night the cabin lost power following a storm (as did a lot of houses in the area) and they messaged to check we were ok; see if we needed any lanterns etc. By far the best hosts we've ever had. If only more could be like them!
There was some poison ivy in the yard which I know the hosts had been working on previously, so I guess this is an ongoing challenge for the site. Also, since we had a tent on the tent pad, there wasn't another perfectly level space for the outdoor table and benches, but it worked ok on a bit of a slope.
We had a great visit and loved our time here!

This hipcamp offers great views and is accessible to a ton of trails. The onsite shelter gave us a place to sit and store our gear during a heavy rain storm. The pit bathroom is convenient but the walk to it is a bit steep and I’m glad there were some steps to it.
We couldn’t get the solar lights at the bathroom to work so make sure you have a headlamp and flashlights.

The amenities were clean and efficiently designed. The site was perfect. Great care has been taken to think the whole thing through. Our dog loved every second of it. There were beautiful old-growth beech trees along the French Broad River. Can't wait to come back.

I had such a wonderful stay here! The campsite was peaceful, beautiful, and the French Broad River made it even more special. Waking up to the sounds of nature and spending time by the water was so relaxing. The hosts were kind and welcoming, and everything was just as described. I will definitely be back and highly recommend this spot to anyone looking for a peaceful getaway! Also, be on the lookout for the white squirrel!

It’s a beautiful spot to get away from the city. We had some fireflies every night. We ran low on fire wood and I messaged Nate. A couple hours later we had a ton of wood. Nate is a wonderful host. The hot tub was very clean.

Honestly the place is beautiful and with the stay. The only downside was that it was confusing to get to. The roads aren’t well marked but once you find it it’s worth it.

4 nights at Rooster Ridge Cabin
The cabin is clean and comfortable. It is well stocked. We enjoyed using it as base camp. The house is very close to the road and aside from the porches there really is no outdoor space.
