We are dog friendly and already love your furry companions, but please keep them leashed. We can provide long cables so your pup can still play outside with you!
The two acre property also includes our home, covered RV site, pear tree (help yourself to fresh fruit!), many shady areas to relax, large field to play, and fire pits to make the perfect s’more!
After a few years of living on the road, we know how hard it can be to find a clean, safe place to stay and how magical it feels when you find just the right spot. Wander our land to enjoy various level hiking trails including a 20 minute hike to a creek and waterfall in the forest (some steep spots and creek is intermittent) or climb up Shaggy Peak (seasoned hikers only please).
IMPORTANT: We are up 1.3 miles of dirt road (with 5-7+% grade in a few short stretches) and are not near public transportation so you will need your own vehicle! Be aware that the roads can be snowy, icy or muddy and rutted ( 4-wheel or All-trak recommended in certain times of year). We don’t guarantee the road will be plowed.
We generally close for the season due to cold weather around Halloween and reopen just before Memorial Day.

Two Hawk Ranch is comprised of 12 acres of high mountain valley meadows, hay fields, Acequias, trees and the Rio Chiquito. Yes, we are located at approximately 7,800ft elevation. My husband and I stumbled across this beautiful and serene property by accident in 2020 just as Covid hit. We feel blessed to be here and feel the need to share it’s calming, restful qualities. We have three adult children and have three grandchildren. We also have eight international children as we hosted international students for four years. You are welcome to come sit by the fire and be social or just do your own thing.

Sites located across the property for up to 8 groups. The RV camping is located near one of our horse corrals and above our irrigation Acequia, above or next to the house, or in the field down by the arena after haying is complete (usually after the first week of July as long as the rain cooperates). Can back in or pull through and has 110v power nearby. No water to hook up to, but we can fill your tanks via hose by the house or arena. Other sites available if you don’t need power, or have a generator.
Property is within a 100yds of national forest service that gives access to off-roading, hiking, biking, horse riding, fishing, and winter snowshoeing, cross country skiing, etc. We are located just off the High Road to Taos in Llano, 29 miles south of Taos and 55 miles north of Santa Fe. We are eight miles from Ski Sipapu and eight miles from Rio Santa Barbara Canyon.
Your well-behaved pets are welcome. We also have one great dane (Raggy), a great dane mix (The Morrigan), one ranch cat (Sasha) and four horses (Gentry, Shadow, Mattie & Jr G). The dogs are a rescue of some kind. The Morrigan is black, 3.5 yrs old and comes out of a rescue in AZ. She went in with her litter as a 5 month old puppy, and she came here about a year later. She is reticent and suspicious, so ignore her and she will come up to you on her own; continue to ignore her. Ragnar (Raggy) is our most recent rescue and is from Las Cruces. He's 3 yrs old and a merle. He suffers from anxiety and fears children. We are working him through his fears, and he is doing really well.
The weather here tends to run cooler, as we are located in the mountains in a small valley at approximately 7,800 ft above sea level. In the spring through fall, temps will average from mid 40°F up to mid 60°F at night and mid 60°F up to mid 90°F during the day. Temps can get into the 100°F's in the summer, but that is rare. Generally if the sun is out, it is warm or hot even tho the actual temps are not. It's a high-altitude affect. The opposite is true as well. Cloud cover will feel cooler. We also experience monsoon style rains that occur in the afternoon generally starting in July and running into August or later.
In the late fall through early spring during winter, the average temps usually run from 0°F up to mid 20°F at night with occasional dips into negative temps and in the day generally run from mid 20°F up to the mid 40°F range. Same as above - if the sun is out, it will feel warmer, etc.
We do hay the fields, so we may have tractor activity going on in the late spring and early summer. In the winter we will be clearing snow from the roads and feeding hay.

This is a lived-in mountain homestead, not a commercial campground. Your campsite is near our home but thoughtfully arranged with its own outdoor living areas and privacy screening. You'll have room to settle in, cook dinner, gather around the fire, and make yourself at home.
You're also welcome to explore the grounds. Relax in a hammock, wander beneath the fruit trees, listen to the river, watch for wildlife, or stay up late under northern New Mexico's dark mountain skies.

We've set up the campsite to feel more like an outdoor room than a parking spot. Your dedicated camping area includes:

Bring Your Own Camp—or Rent Ours
The campsite is best suited to camper vans, Class B RVs, truck campers, rooftop tents, and smaller camping setups. Don't have your own camping gear? Ask about renting our rooftop tent mounted on a trailer, available as an optional add-on.
Our rural mountain driveway is narrow and winding, with tight curves, steep drop-offs, and overhanging trees. Conventional travel trailers, fifth wheels, and large motorhomes are not suitable. Please check with us about unusual vehicle setups before booking.
A Few Things to Know
Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a leash. We have friendly resident dogs and cats, and wildlife is part of everyday life here.
We're at a mountain elevation where the seasons really matter. Summer brings cool evenings, fall brings golden aspens, and winter brings snow and easy access to nearby skiing. It's beautiful country, but come prepared for changing mountain weather.
Come Hide Out for a While
MAD Moon Hideout isn't a resort, and we're not trying to make it one.
It's a slightly unconventional, wonderfully rural little piece of northern New Mexico—an old adobe homestead with mountain views, fruit trees, running water, dark skies, and room to breathe.

My husband and I camped here for three nights. It’s a super private setting that’s an easy drive to Sante Fe and up to Bandelier National Monument. The two dogs who live on the property are super friendly and came up visit us one morning. Jessica was super helpful with answering any questions we had. There was water available and a place to dump our trash on the way out (not by the campsite). The sunsets here are next level! So gorgeous. We have an off road capable teardrop trailer and had absolutely no issues getting into this campsite

We also found a world class restaurant very close by, called Fable Restaurant and Market. If you are looking for a camp close to every thing, this is your spot. A gravel, road takes one through a short distance through the locked gate and into Agua de Vida campground as well as the owner's residence . We stayed in a level RV spot, picnic table included, and had easy access to Pecos National Historic Park and Pecos Canyon State Park. We especially enjoyed the many birds in residence (I mean the wild ones, but there are also peacocks, chickens, and at least one duck) as well as Brenda's two friendly dogs. There's a cute bathroom - water pressure in shower minimal but does get one clean. It was a great weekend!

The land and views were stunning. Directions to get there were detailed and clear (although I entered the coordinates into Apple Maps and they took us right to the gate, I used Brenda’s instructions just in case). The stars at night were amazing - so clear we could see the Milky Way. Lots of birds, and friendly dogs that we loved to pet and accompanied us on a couple of walks (if anyone finds a black tennis shoe, it’s my husband’s. Heed the warning about leaving them outside at night! He did, but one fell off the top of our trailer and was never seen again -lol - a small price to pay.) It IS rustic-ish, but while I know there were others around (heard some snoring and saw some other vehicles as I overshot the bath house as I made a late night bathroom run) nobody was near our site -Open Sky - and it felt like we had the mountaintop to ourselves. Brenda was responsive to a couple of questions that came up. It was a fun stay!

Very nice peaceful site. Cool ruins on the property. Great location to visit Pecos national monument and Santa Fe area. Our dog loved playing with their dog, Pepper.
