Lush high desert river oasis nestled in a fertile valley in the Carson National Forest right between the fiery expanse of Taos and the rolling colorful formations of Abiquiu. Peaceful and private 3 acres right by the river at the edge of a little quaint town called La Madera (145 people, no shops)- just 6 miles to the healing mineral Hot Springs of Ojo Caliente, a place of emergence or rebirth as known to the local Natives.
Right by the river, held by a ridge (that makes for amazing sunset hikes), I have a 16ft Yurt Canvas set up with furnishings (desk, couch, wash stand) and a wooden Queen Bed with down bedding. This site can only be reached by foot across the river via stumps- a car can be parked near by.. approx. 50ft.
I also have a Vintage Camper that can be heated, has a kitchen, electricity and plenty of outdoor furniture with a fire pit and serene mountain views. As well as a monastic and very grounding Ensuite Bedroom, or a simple campsite if you want to bring your own camper or tent. All facilities have access to a guest bathroom inside the main house.
I offer dog sitting while you soak at Ojo, healing modalities that you'll find in the Extras section, and my dear neighbor Jackie takes appointments for massages with homemade essential oils.
+++ 6 miles to Ojo Caliente Hot Springs. There you will find the best restaurant in the area, with locally/organically farmed produce.
The land is naturally and beautifully wild- it is not a manicured campsite. The dirt rd down to the property is best suited for higher clearance vehicles, but is manageable for city cars.
With land by the river comes the mosquitos- June to August only. They are predominantly active during sunrise and sunset; long loose fitting clothes and a repellent work great.
Waterhole, Waterfall and climbing sites near by, as well as Plaza Blanca, Abiquiu, Ghost Ranch and the Taos Gorge are 30 mins drive away.
*No cell service in the greater area. WiFi reaches around the house/deck and allows for WiFi Calling: that’s a setting in your phone that enables phone calls & texts beside usual internet access.

I sometimes have visitors and work exchange staying on the property, but you will have a private and separate area to park and camp. (Please note that that there are no bathroom facilities available, so please come prepared with your own set up). If you are interested in earthen building construction or off-grid-life, I am happy to talk with you about it if time allows.

The property is in the agricultural village of El Guique just north of Ohkay Owingeh Pueblo, where indigenous settlements have existed for many centuries due to rich soil, proximity to the Rio Grande and Chama rivers. While we are in a rural area, you will be 10 min north of the town of Espanola and 5 min from the Ohkay Owingeh rest stop (with a great El Parasol Norte takeaway restaurant- don't miss their tacos!). It's easy to run to Espanola's Wal-Mart, Lowes or other stores if you forgot anything or need to purchase supplies.
In terms of the campsite, our 5 acre property is a narrow agricultural strip that extends from the irrigation acequia (ditch) at the top of the dirt road down into a dense bosque (forest), ending in a path to the Rio Grande. The campsite is in the bosque (forest) a little distance from our house in the privacy of the cottonwoods and elms. At this time we do not have other campsites sharing the space so you will be camping by yourself and have the bathroom to yourself.
It is a short walk from the camp to the Rio Grande where you'll find stairs to the river. The river is wade-able in the late summer but in winter/spring the currents are strong and not advisable for young children or non-swimmers. You and your family are welcome to walk back to our farm to interact with goats, chickens, and our friendly dogs, use the playground, or swing on the large swing by the pond.
This property is at its best Summer through mid Fall when all is green, the pond is full and river is calmer. Winter camping is still doable but may include snow, a frozen pond, and leafless trees, as well as visiting sandhill cranes.
The site is spacious, has a firepit with a cover. We can supply wood if you need it (just text us). In summer we have mosquitos being so close to river so come prepared with some serious sprays or creams- citronella candles and herbal stuff won't be effective here.
You will have a lot of privacy in the bosque, and it is relatively quiet from urban noise. But you will be in agricultural country, so you will hear sounds of roosters, horses, goats, peacocks as well as our neighbors doing their thing in the farm land all around you. There can be dogs barking so if any of this noise bothers you at night you will want to bring earplugs.

Two Hawk Ranch is comprised of 12 acres of high mountain valley meadows, hay fields, Acequias, trees and the Rio Chiquito. Yes, we are located at approximately 7,800ft elevation. My husband and I stumbled across this beautiful and serene property by accident in 2020 just as Covid hit. We feel blessed to be here and feel the need to share it’s calming, restful qualities. We have three adult children and have three grandchildren. We also have eight international children as we hosted international students for four years. You are welcome to come sit by the fire and be social or just do your own thing.

Sites located across the property for up to 8 groups. The RV camping is located near one of our horse corrals and above our irrigation Acequia, above or next to the house, or in the field down by the arena after haying is complete (usually after the first week of July as long as the rain cooperates). Can back in or pull through and has 110v power nearby. No water to hook up to, but we can fill your tanks via hose by the house or arena. Other sites available if you don’t need power, or have a generator.
Property is within a 100yds of national forest service that gives access to off-roading, hiking, biking, horse riding, fishing, and winter snowshoeing, cross country skiing, etc. We are located just off the High Road to Taos in Llano, 29 miles south of Taos and 55 miles north of Santa Fe. We are eight miles from Ski Sipapu and eight miles from Rio Santa Barbara Canyon.
Your well-behaved pets are welcome. We also have one great dane (Raggy), a great dane mix (The Morrigan), one ranch cat (Sasha) and four horses (Gentry, Shadow, Mattie & Jr G). The dogs are a rescue of some kind. The Morrigan is black, 3.5 yrs old and comes out of a rescue in AZ. She went in with her litter as a 5 month old puppy, and she came here about a year later. She is reticent and suspicious, so ignore her and she will come up to you on her own; continue to ignore her. Ragnar (Raggy) is our most recent rescue and is from Las Cruces. He's 3 yrs old and a merle. He suffers from anxiety and fears children. We are working him through his fears, and he is doing really well.
The weather here tends to run cooler, as we are located in the mountains in a small valley at approximately 7,800 ft above sea level. In the spring through fall, temps will average from mid 40°F up to mid 60°F at night and mid 60°F up to mid 90°F during the day. Temps can get into the 100°F's in the summer, but that is rare. Generally if the sun is out, it is warm or hot even tho the actual temps are not. It's a high-altitude affect. The opposite is true as well. Cloud cover will feel cooler. We also experience monsoon style rains that occur in the afternoon generally starting in July and running into August or later.
In the late fall through early spring during winter, the average temps usually run from 0°F up to mid 20°F at night with occasional dips into negative temps and in the day generally run from mid 20°F up to the mid 40°F range. Same as above - if the sun is out, it will feel warmer, etc.
We do hay the fields, so we may have tractor activity going on in the late spring and early summer. In the winter we will be clearing snow from the roads and feeding hay.

Great private campsite just a short drive from downtown Taos. Has a little setup for a tent, fire pit, and area for kitchen / cleaning with a port a potty as well.
Don was super responsive and even gave us some firewood to make a lovely fire at night. Would definitely stay again! I recommend getting to the site during the day as it’s a dirt road and would be a bit tricky to find at night- Don helped with directions as well.

We loved our time here! Kelly and Armando were exceptionally helpful, kind, fabulous recs for the area and communciation was top notch. Spot #2 has fabulous views and was easy to access. Yes, there is road noice as mentioned, but it is inconsistent and nominal. Their Hipcamp is central to many Taos shops, restaurants, hikes/parks, and a great place to just chill. The stars, sunsets, and darkness at night were ideal. Staying here allowed us to explore Taos for the first time and we would definitely reccommend and would return!!

Allows you an hour drive in any direction to any portion of CNF while providing a beautiful base camp that yields isolation and tranquility in the midst of humbling views in all directions.

We were invited to tour and learn about all the various efforts Anastasia and her community are experimenting with sustainable practices. I had a great stay here! The hosts were kind and welcoming, and as a solo traveler, I felt completely safe the whole time. It was peaceful, easy to find, and exactly what I needed for my trip. The porta potty was great for emergencies, but just know it’s a basic setup. Also the sunrises are incredible from this spot! Overall, I’d definitely recommend!

This was the worst experience we have ever had with a Hipcamp property. Our reservation was confirmed to arrive on 7/8/23 by Alexandria the host. The host left GPS coordinates to get to her house in El Rito, NM. When we arrived, there was no sign saying there was a hipcamp at the GPS coordinates she has on her hipcamp site. Only a locked fence and tiny house with no room to get our camper on the property. We called and texted her at least 4 times and did not get an answer from her. It took us over 2 hours to arrive at the property and were very angry and disappointed with what the host put us through. Had to find an alternate place to stay which was difficult with same-day booking. Save yourself a lot of grief and do not stay here!

This is a beautiful and peaceful campground with many solid camp spots. Getting there is VERY challenging unless you have an AWD and high suspension vehicle. Driving up the hill is on a road not suitable for passenger vehicles and is like driving through a very rough empty river bed. We made it in our AWD Mazda CX5 but it was sketchy and we almost turned around for how rough it was. Plan on driving 2-5MPH and being very cautious unless you are in a truck or jeep.
Once you get to the campgrounds there is a decent parking lot, bathroom, and beautiful scenery. Each campsite has a fire pit and some have picnic tables. If you prefer a more secluded spot, hike around the area and you might find some.
Scenery is gorgeous. Well worth it!

Get chilly starting in early October. This is a very picturesque campsite. Had a blast up here. Bmvery quiet and low traffic.

I did not camp there but I was there because I lieve close by!
I like to tell everybody that it is VERY BEAUTIFUL up there!
Mature Ponderosa pine trees like you do not see them anymore elsewhere (because of logging in the earlier days), I LOVE horse back riding up there, most beautiful area and NO other people! Just got to love that...

Beautiful campground. We practically had it to ourselves. We visited in late September 2016 just before Labor Day. We were told about this campground by a traveling couple in the Alley Cantina in Taos. Its a bit of a drive off of the scenic High Road. There is a ranger station close o the turn off. We hiked a bit up the stream there and wished wed had more time to explore. Definitely want to go back and continue that trail!

Do you like to fish? Are you exploring the Enchanted Circle? Stay here! The campground is nice with the expected amenities for a forest service site. There are trails to walk along the lakes and enjoy the views. Many people come for the day to fish and the place is really popular. Expect to have plenty of neighbors. Red River is nearby with places to shop and eat. There are a lot of roads and trails in the area to explore so you'll find plenty to do.

This is one of my favorite places to camp. Sites are mostly well separated and there's just the right amount of shade. There's no camping right at the lake but a trail takes you there. Bring all the necessary supplies since it's quite a trip to get back to town.

Beautiful!!! We showed up on Sunday eve of Labor Day wknd and there were only a handful of people! EVERYONE left on Monday-we stayed until Wednesday with a campground to ourselves. The water had not been tested yet (& was turned off), so the ranger kindly waived our fee (18$ tent site). We had rain 2 eves, lots of sunshine & very cold at night. We stayed in site 7 & thought it was the best in the whole place! A trail behind the site lead to a magical meadow filled with irises. Hike to the ponds-it's lovely! Drive down 1950 to just past McKrystal campground to a parking area. One way you can walk to an old boyscout camp (about 3.2 miles rt) and the other way leads to remnants of a ghost town (about 5 miles rt). See my blog for info

The sites by the creek fill up fast but it is well worth it. Also, going across the road and up the mountain is easier places to get firewood.

This is my favorite campground in this area! The improvements are nice and it's usually not too crowded. There are trails accessible from the campground and more close by.

It's a bumpy ride to this campground-I wouldn't recommend it for vehicles that are not 4wd. We camped in one of the designated camp sites, although there are apparently hike-in sites here too. It's a popular place for fishing-lots of peeps coming and going. It's a gorgeous lake to wake up to in the morning. There was one single vault toilet in the parking lot and no water other than the lake. We feel like we got the best site-to the left and on a little hill right before the day use parking lot. 4x4 made it a breeze to drive up to. We were glad we picked up a tarp in red River (great little camp store there), because it rained all evening. We took a nice walk around the lake in the morning. Popular and beautiful.

Great little campsite on a creek. Easily accessible, on the road from Taos up to the Ski area. The best sites (in my opinion) require carefully crossing the creek. This drowns out any road noise and all you can hear is the gentle sound of the water running by. No cell service (a plus!), but close to town, if you need WIFI/service/supplies. Great little trail along the creek going upstream worth checking out - perfect for morning meditation!

Nice little campground. All sites are either directly on the river or just across the small road that runs through the grounds. Some sites may have some road noise from the highway, but our site was buffered by an rock wall. All we could really hear was the stream running near by. Sites are mostly spread out enough that you have a little privacy. The area is rocky with few areas of grass. So if you are a tent camper bring extra padding. Pit toilets are available and are fairly clean. We paid $16 per night. I think it was extra $5 for an additional vehicle. Nice little campground.

The drive was not fun in a high clearance vehicle, the "lake" was pretty well dry, and there is no one around for emergencies. The views were only do so at the "lake".

This spot was way better than I imagined. The camping is sort of dispersed but there were bathrooms where we stayed. We pulled in past some RVs and down a dirt road a little and then this beautiful, grassy oasis nestled between trees and the river and these crazy orange rock formations came into view. There was a picnic table under the tree, a log to cross the river, and stars forever. You can tell by how easy it is to find firewood that it doesn't get a lot of traffic, so it had a nice maintained yet secluded feel to it. It's an easy drive to any of the rock climbing areas and that cobblestone is top notch! The campsite is closest to Little River Wall (beautiful, quiet, and you are practically belaying from a stream).

La Junta is a Forrest Road with nice dispersed sites and a few small campgrounds scattered. Pit toilets and dumpsters are available at the campgrounds.
The road connects Tres Ritos on 518 with Angel fire. The total length of the road is a little over 20 miles. I drove it in a 4Runner and had a great time.
This location is popular with motorcyclists and ATVs. If you don't mind seeing them ride by the site (or have a motorcycle yourself) its a great place to go. If you are not a fan, I would probably find another campsite or drive 10 miles up the road.
