Enjoy the majestic beauty of the Taos Valley from the verdant fields and cerros of the Dragonfly Mountain Ranch! Whether a seasoned traveler or one's first visit to Taos our goal is to exceed expectations, and we have a variety of campsites to accommodate various needs and tastes. While here one can see history come to life by way of our living history ranch and historic home, one of the first homesteads in Des Montes owned by the same family for over 150 years. See firsthand how the unique Acequia system of New Mexico has given life to the surrounding pastoral fields and the agricultural practices of the past still relevant in today’s Taos Valley. For those wanting the best of both worlds, access to in-town activities as well as trail/hiking/river adventures, the Des Montes sites would be the best selection. Close enough to town for groceries and conveniences along with other sought after tourist attractions such as the Taos Pueblo, Taos Plaza and surrounding galleries/shops. In addition, Arroyo Seco and Arroyo Hondo are quaint little villages less than 10 minutes away for for addt'l groceries/market/restaurants options. The John Dunn Recreation Area is also less than 15 minutes drive from the campsites. Despite accessibility to endless activities just minutes away there remains a sense of solitude, space and privacy that one would be hard pressed to find elsewhere. Cerro Chiflo, Cerro Montoso and the Miner's Trail are within driving/hiking distance. Spend a day down on the banks of Rio Grande and unwind around the campfire and while stars light up the dark skies. Your next adventure awaits...hope to see you soon! 65 gallon fresh water tank and free firewood on site Enjoy sweeping views of the majestic Taos Valley from the lush, green pastoral fields of the Dragonfly Mountain Ranch. Nestled at the base of the Sangre De Cristos in Des Montes, NM one has convenient 15 minute or less access to the Taos Pueblo, Taos Plaza, Arroyo Seco and Arroyo Hondo. Taos Ski Valley is 30 minutes to the NE and makes for a scenic drive along the Rio Hondo. Quick and convenient access to the John Dunn Recreation and Hot Springs (less than 5 miles) at the banks of the Rio Grande and nearly instant access to the Carson National Forest and Rio Grande Del Norte Nat'l Monument make for endless outdoor opportunities. Coupled with the fact that Tio Willy's gate code is offered for day hikes even if not staying at the Tio Willy's location. One can also see firsthand how the Acequia watering system, unique to New Mexico and Southern Colorado, has given life to the Taos Valley and the sustained agricultural practices from past to present help to keep Camp 1 and the Bonsai the locations Hipcampers have grown to love. The Bonsai is also conveniently located just 250 yards away and when booked in conjunction with Camp1 is perfect to accommodate large family gatherings, birthday parties, special events, etc. Both locations offer plenty of green grass for tent camping, campers, RVs and most anything else that isn't a tractor trailer. Tio Willy's Rest Stop-Taos Plateau

100% (4)
RV/tent site · Sleeps 30 · Vehicles under 13 m
Mountain meets plain on the Taos Plateau - take an early morning hike and watch the sun rise from atop a 7,900ft volcanic mountain. Campsites are located on private inholdings within the Rio Grande Del Norte National Monument. One of the few remaining private parcels from the Homesteader Era still held in trust by the heirs of the original family - one can be certain that history comes alive with each step! 300+ acres of private mountain and plain to explore - hike/bike/walk to hearts content, pitch a hammock, or read a book without having to leave the property boundaries. Gather around the campfire and marvel at the dark skies while planning the next adventure. Cerro Montoso, Cerro Chiflo and the Miner's Trail are within driving/hiking distance and provide for perfect daytrip excursions. There is room for tents, Camper Vans, RV's under 27' and car camping of course. High clearance and AWD recommended. **If muddy/rainy 4x4 WILL be necessary. Please see our friends at Rio Grande Balloons to book your hot air balloon ride while in Taos! https://www.riograndeballoons.com 575-208-1888. **guided ATV tours available along with Chuckwagon dinner catering - please inquire with host**
