The camp was founded 40 years ago as a summer camp for kids. We continue to offer camps for children and their parents and grandparents (family camps), as well as welcome adults and other groups to enjoy the vast and wild high desert nature up on this ridge.

Register for our nature education activities and resources lead by The Wilderness Institute (available for all of our guests). These topics include sustainability, recycling, composting, water conservation, wildfire prevention, outdoor safety, and nature awareness along with the use of our hiking trails.
You can also join an archery class, tomahawk throwing, climbing on the mobile climbing wall, Yoga, Tai Chi, Climbing Into The Heart of the Mother Tree, Star talks and more! (https://wildernessinstitute.org/outdoor-programs/)
There are beautiful views and access to Shaggy Peak, the southernmost tip of the Rocky Mountains and the Sangre de Cristo Mountain Range. Wander our land to enjoy various level hiking trails including a 20 minute hike to a creek and waterfall in the forest (some steep spots and creek is intermittent) or climb up Shaggy Peak (seasoned hikers only please).
IMPORTANT: We are up 1.3 miles of dirt road (with 5-7+% grade in a few short stretches) and are not near public transportation so you will need your own vehicle! Be aware that the roads can be snowy, icy or muddy and rutted ( 4-wheel or All-trak recommended in certain times of year). We don’t guarantee the road will be plowed.
We generally close for the season due to cold weather around Halloween and reopen just before Memorial Day.

Campsite DOS: It is large enough for a sprinter or small camper van. You can pull right in. You will need to back out to depart. It now accommodates two vehicles (two cars, a sprinter and a car, a car with teardrop and another car.)

With land by the river comes the mosquitos- June to August. They are predominantly active during sunrise and sunset; long loose fitting clothes and/or a repellent work great.
Waterhole, Waterfall and climbing sites near by, as well as Plaza Blanca, Abiquiu, Ghost Ranch and the Taos Gorge are 30 mins drive away.

Our place is for Wildlife, to be fed, and given water and safe space to raise young. We are located in an area where the birds of the world fly from the north to the south and then change direction each season. Many lizards . Many wild mammals . There are many farms in the area. With Horses , goats , chickens , ducks , mules, donkeys , other livestock .
We have no pets and no livestock.
At night this is dark ( we do have solar lights on walk ways ) and it is peaceful. A safe zone for travelers . Serene , gentle and lovely . You get your privacy .

Set above the historic town of Madrid N.M. is Waldo Mesa, the location of past mining operations and stunning vista's.The campsite is 0.9 miles off highway 14 in the historic town of Madrid and up to the mesa. Site 1 can accommodate RV's and tall setups as well as tents. The hill going to the site is short, approx. 0.2 ml. Its dirt and rock and a little steep but everything from bikes, motorcycles, sedans and buses can easily navigate without bottoming out, just take it slow. It has beautiful mesa views with plenty of privacy and nice outhouse within 50 yards. Madrid and sister village, Cerrillos are loaded with places to explore on foot or by other means. Both towns are very rich in history, from past ocean existence to Native American civilizations, silver and gold mining to booming wartime coal mining industries, to ghost towns.

The land has arroyos, mesas, lots of flat areas to car camp, pitch a tent or sleep on the ground under the beautiful, dark New Mexico skies. There are also a few places to hang a hammock. To the west, there are miles and miles to hike, mountain bike, or just enjoy the view of the Magdalena Mountains. Neighbors are quiet and you can choose a spot away from anyone.

COMPOSTING TOILET DIRECTIONS
This composting toilet works by automatically separating liquids from solids . Just follow the directions below.
Men please sit for every use.
1. Lift seat to place a filter over the opening to catch solids. Toilet paper is disposed of in the toilet.
The lever on the side can be opened to allow solids to pass through into the lower half, and closed again to hide the contents.
2. After use turn the lever on the side ( ) to open solids container.
3. When finished close the opening in the bowl. Then, turn the handle on the ( ) side to mix solids and peat moss. Shut lid and leave. NO FLUSHING IS NEEDED.

Had a great couple of nights at Dragonfly in their Bonsai spot 2. Private grassy space with a nice shade tree. There’s a little bit of road noise, but we didn’t even notice it at night. Don is a super responsive host with lots of great information to share. Arrival details were clear and easy to follow. For awareness, the porta potty and water are located at spot 1, but we were able to stop by there to get water. Two golden retriever pups who live near the property came to visit us. Super sweet and well-behaved. We loved it!

Such beautiful land and such nice people! We loved our stay at San Pablo Ranch. Lots of hiking, vast views, dark night skies. The sites are a bit close together, but we worked it out. Planning our next trip back!

Quiet, safe neighborhood, friendly hosts. We had a lovely stay and enjoyed having access to the outdoor space, a shower, water and bathroom. Easy access to ballon festival, casino, hiking near Sandia and trails nearby. Walking distance to restaurants and coffee shops.

5 nights at Big Little Hideaway in Taos
Rainbow Tiny Home was perfect for my stay. It was a solo trip, five nights to see what Taos has to offer. I like that this place was outside of town, the stargazing was unforgettable and it was easy to get to town and to a variety of hikes. I loved visiting Arroyo Seco for yoga and charm. Doug and Jayme were so kind and responsive. The bed was super comfortable and the house had everything I needed.

Don was communicative and provided detailed information on how to access the site. Site #1 was level, has a small gravel area to sit and relax which leads to a well thought out fire pit, provided free wood, and ideal for larger groups. Bathroom was well maintained. Morning views and sunset were wonderful during our visit. Highly recommend. Taos is a 15 min drive. Thank you, Don!

My husband and I loved camping here!!! So beautiful and very well kept. I am so happy we stayed here. Ciana is so welcoming and friendly. The area is peaceful and quiet and we enjoyed stargazing, hiking, and they have great amenities! My first time camping was here and I fell in love with it!

Brad and Ciana were so generous. After the heavy rains in New Mexico, they kindly offered to let us stay additional nights for free until the rain’s passed because the rain caused the roads to flood and it was hard to get out.
The campground itself is a little bit in the mountain, so you definitely need an SUV or 4 x 4 car.
The actual campground itself is very well organized. There are outlets for charging your phone, a kitchen to cook things and also night lights. The bathrooms are also very nice and included showers as well that were hot
Aside from our mistake bringing a compact car. I had a wonderful experience and highly recommend

This is a private, no frills RV campground with a responsive, helpful and lovely host. Big sky, great for star-gazing. I would recommend arriving during daylight, as it is a little tricky to find at night. And, not sure if this happens every night, but when we were there, the train came through 4 times during the night and early morning. Just an FYI. Thank you Vanetta for your hospitality!

Ciana was very helpful when I arrived to be sure I knew where to go and amenities. I had a nice quite primitive camping spot. It was setup well and exactly what I was looking for. Having good bathrooms and a place to do dishes was a bonus. Looking forward to staying again.

This was our second time camping there this summer! Due to the rainstorms (i guess) the power was out in Madrid so we left the Mineshaft and came up to the site early and cooked breakfast for dinner. Kim was so welcoming and we joined the drum circle later in the solar powered vestibule. 10 out of 10!
