Set above the historic town of Madrid N.M. is Waldo Mesa, the location of past mining operations and stunning vista's.The campsite is 0.9 miles off highway 14 in the historic town of Madrid and up to the mesa. Site 1 can accommodate RV's and tall setups as well as tents. The hill going to the site is short, approx. 0.2 ml. Its dirt and rock and a little steep but everything from bikes, motorcycles, sedans and buses can easily navigate without bottoming out, just take it slow. It has beautiful mesa views with plenty of privacy and nice outhouse within 50 yards. Madrid and sister village, Cerrillos are loaded with places to explore on foot or by other means. Both towns are very rich in history, from past ocean existence to Native American civilizations, silver and gold mining to booming wartime coal mining industries, to ghost towns.The campsite is 0.9 miles off highway 14 in the historic town of Madrid and up to the mesa. Off leash. I have 3 rescues, 1 male lab, and 1 female pit/boxer mix. My girl has a very unique personality and is obsessed with reflections, lights, balls and licking your face off. I've found that introducing her to campers upon arrival is crucial. Once she knows, I know you're there, she won't bark at you. She is beyond sweet and gets along well with other dogs! My boy is pretty much lìķe a normal dog!
Potable water available
I haul my own water and I ask that you bring your own but if you forgot or the store is closed I will gladly supply you with what you need until the next day.

Tent camping went great! The land, the view, and the host were wonderful. Would recommend having 4WD / all-terrain vehicle for the drive up to the campsite though— my 2WD SUV almost got stuck halfway up the steep gravel hill.

Me & my friends had the best time! It was my first time camping and was a little worried about safety but Kim was super duper helpful. We arrived after dark and Kim guided us on getting to the site safely since we couldnt see much. I would suggest a 4x4 because the way up is pretty rocky, but the view was incredible!

Kim was so friendly and communicated well! The view from the camp was incredible. We loved stargazing before bed and watching the sunrise while we drank our coffee. The surrounding town is also very cute.

You will be safe and secluded at the top of a winding but manageable dirt road to the top with an amazing view. Fun artsy town of Madrid way close by for supplies, coffee fix etc. You'll be camping next to a cool, eccentric cemetery. Host is positive and responsive. Stay here...Two thumbs up! Safe Travels.

The road is rough so be prepared for that but it is very easy to get to and once you’re there the views are more than worth it. Sunset and sunrise are just spectacular. The host is a wonderful person and gave our pups lots of love.

It was a lovely secluded spot. We enjoyed the sunset very much. I would like to come back and visit Madrid but we were just passing through. Kim was super helpful, too.

Loved staying here! A beautiful spot with a little walk into town to grab a beer or food. The cemetery was filled with so much uniqueness. I would not have ever been graced with this sweet gem if it wasn’t for finding this camping spot!

The views from the mesa were beautiful and the stars were incredible. We did visit after a rainstorm, and pulling our trailer up (even with a 4 wheel drive truck) was rough. The grade is steep and the mud was deep. It was a bit of a challenge to find the spot.

Awesome views and the cemetery is fascinating. Kim is a sweet, gracious host and made us feel so welcome. We were very grateful for our 4-wheel drive truck on the way up and down the mesa!

Beautiful views and quiet. Quirky property with a cemetery (campsite is behind it near the edge of the mesa). The road to the site is rough and definitely requires higher clearance and 4WD/AWD. We made it up slowly in our electric mid-size SUV, not without a few sketchy bumps underneath. I couldn’t imagine a sedan having great success up the road (big rocks, big dips and eroded areas, and mud in areas after a rain). Just FYI!

The Edge was such a fun and funky place to stay! It’s about 1.5 miles from town so is quiet and up on the mesa—great for sunsets. The Land of the Dead was a nice treat as well, make sure to spend time there, looking at all the graves. Kim was a very gracious host, communicable and kind. Would stay here again!

It's a magical locale. The views are spectacular. I enjoyed everything about camping here. Kim S is a great host and gave me clear directions. I appreciated that she checked in to see how I was doing. I'm bummed I missed the concert on the stage. Music under the stars in the "Land of the Dead" which is really a more alive location than the lives many people live hustling around in chaotic lives. I'll be back.

Great mesa spot with fantastic views and great shelter hangout area, aka the Love Lounge. Spend time wandering the nearby Madrid cemetery. Wonderful experience and we want to come back!

I loved the view from the mesa, especially the sunrise. The site was very quiet and peaceful and I slept very well. I enjoyed walking in the nearby cemetery. The outhouse is the best I have ever seen.

This really was an unbelievable site! It was out in nature and also a local treat. The cemetery that is just nearby is not just a traditional cemetery but the Land of the Dead where there are beautiful, artistic markers and space to enjoy yourself. This isn't a sad place, but a celebration of life. If you need your creative juices recharged, this site works from all angles! All sorts of surprises await even including a friendly, glowing outhouse with a solar light lit path. We also had a friendly visit from the owner's dog, who really was just the sweetest! A campsite itself looks out upon a beautiful view and is very private and spacious. There's a parking area and an area with seating to look out on the views. Kim came out to visit us and answer any questions we had. It was a wonderful experience! The road up was a white-knuckle experience, but like the instructions said, we took it slow and we were able to make it without four-wheel drive. And it was worth it!

Outstanding views of a beautiful world! We missed sunset but woke up for sunrise and were not disappointed. The walk to the outhouse is well lit and the place has great energy. A bumpy ride up to the Mesa is rewarded with peaceful sanctuary!

This camp is just TOO COOL! We drove right to the camp, with no directional issue(s). I would say a daylight arrival made it simpler. The table at the camp needs repair/replacement. The cemetery completes the gifts this camp offers.
