MAD Moon Hideout Your own little hideout in the mountains of northern New Mexico. Tucked into the mountains roughly halfway between Santa Fe and Taos, MAD Moon Hideout is a quirky little base camp for exploring northern New Mexico—or doing absolutely nothing at all. We're just off the scenic High Road to Taos, surrounded by historic villages, artist studios, mountain trails, and some of the most beautiful back roads in the Southwest. Spend your days wandering through Taos galleries, exploring Santa Fe, skiing or hiking at Sipapu, visiting the villages of Truchas and Chimayó, or discovering the wineries, galleries, and back roads of Dixon and Embudo. We're also an ideal home base for the annual High Road Art Tour. But you don't have to leave the property to have an experience. A Little Piece of Old New Mexico MAD Moon Hideout sits on ten acres in the tiny mountain village of Llano San Juan, at an elevation of approximately 8,000 feet. At the heart of the property is our century-old adobe home, surrounded by apple, pear, and plum trees. A small river runs below, and Carson National Forest borders the back of the property. This is a lived-in mountain homestead, not a commercial campground. Your campsite is near our home but thoughtfully arranged with its own outdoor living areas and privacy screening. You'll have room to settle in, cook dinner, gather around the fire, and make yourself at home. You're also welcome to explore the grounds. Relax in a hammock, wander beneath the fruit trees, listen to the river, watch for wildlife, or stay up late under northern New Mexico's dark mountain skies. Your Outdoor Living Space We've set up the campsite to feel more like an outdoor room than a parking spot. Your dedicated camping area includes: • A private outdoor kitchen and dining space with a propane grill, tables, and seating • Your own fire pit and gathering area • A private composting toilet with a handwashing station • Potable well water and a dedicated 30-amp electrical hookup • Reliable high-speed Wi-Fi throughout the property • Outdoor games, including disc golf and lawn games • Access to hammocks and places to relax around the property Hot Tub Under the Stars: Our wood-fired hot tub is available as an optional add-on. There's something special about soaking in hot water on a cool mountain evening beneath a sky full of stars. A Place to Come Inside If the weather turns—or you just feel like hanging out indoors—guests can enjoy our Livin' Room, a casual game room and music studio with foosball, darts, board games, television, and a comfortable place to unwind. Shower facilities: Our dedicated private outdoor shower is under construction. Until it's ready, guests can arrange a scheduled shower inside our home, accessed through a separate private entrance. Bring Your Own Camp—or Rent Ours The campsite is best suited to camper vans, Class B RVs, truck campers, rooftop tents, and smaller camping setups. Don't have your own camping gear? Ask about renting our rooftop tent mounted on a trailer, available as an optional add-on. Our rural mountain driveway is narrow and winding, with tight curves, steep drop-offs, and overhanging trees. Conventional travel trailers, fifth wheels, and large motorhomes are not suitable. Please check with us about unusual vehicle setups before booking. A Few Things to Know Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a leash. We have friendly resident dogs and cats, and wildlife is part of everyday life here. We're at a mountain elevation where the seasons really matter. Summer brings cool evenings, fall brings golden aspens, and winter brings snow and easy access to nearby skiing. It's beautiful country, but come prepared for changing mountain weather. Come Hide Out for a While MAD Moon Hideout isn't a resort, and we're not trying to make it one. It's a slightly unconventional, wonderfully rural little piece of northern New Mexico—an old adobe homestead with mountain views, fruit trees, running water, dark skies, and room to breathe. Come for the scenery, the art, the history, the skiing, the winding back roads, or simply the chance to spend a few days somewhere different. Explore all day. Come home to the mountains. Hide out for a while.Nestled among mature apple, pear, and plum trees on our 10-acre historic mountain homestead, your campsite offers a peaceful little retreat in the heart of northern New Mexico. At approximately 8,000 feet elevation, you'll enjoy fresh mountain air, cool evenings, beautiful views, and the soothing sound of the river flowing just below the property. Your campsite has its own dedicated outdoor living space, thoughtfully arranged for comfort and privacy, with a cooking and dining area, fire pit, seating, composting toilet, potable water, electricity, and high-speed Wi-Fi. Privacy screening and the natural landscape help create a cozy hideaway, even though our century-old adobe home is nearby. Beyond your campsite, you're welcome to wander beneath the fruit trees, relax in a hammock, visit the river, explore the acequia and wooded areas, or enjoy the games and gathering spaces around the property. Carson National Forest borders the back of our land, and after sunset, the mountains reveal one of their greatest treasures: wonderfully dark, star-filled skies. This isn't a crowded campground or a manicured resort. It's a quirky, lived-in northern New Mexico homestead, where village dogs occasionally wander through, wildlife visits, and the rhythm of rural mountain life is part of the experience. Whether you're here to explore the High Road, discover nearby villages, hike, ski, or simply relax beside a fire listening to the river, MAD Moon Hideout is your own little mountain base camp.
Rig suitability
Vehicles under 20 feet allowed
**Vehicle Size & Driveway Access** Our mountain driveway is narrow, winding, and steep in places, with tight turns, overhanging trees, and some significant drop-offs. We're accustomed to driving it every day, but we recognize that it may feel intimidating to visitors unfamiliar with mountain roads. That said, we've successfully accommodated a surprising variety of vehicles, including pickup trucks towing loaded 12-foot utility trailers, teardrop trailers, truck campers, rooftop-tent setups, large camper vans, and small motorhomes. Both experienced and first-time motorhome drivers have navigated the driveway successfully. **The real limitation isn't necessarily vehicle length—it's the combination of length, width, height, ground clearance, and maneuverability.** Because we haven't measured the dimensions of every vehicle that's made it down safely, we don't want to give you an arbitrary maximum that might be misleading. **Please contact us before booking if you're bringing anything larger than a standard passenger vehicle or pickup truck.** Tell us what you're driving, its dimensions, and whether you're towing anything. We'll help determine whether your setup is a good fit and discuss parking options. We want you to arrive feeling confident and comfortable—not discover halfway down the driveway that it's more adventure than you bargained for! No towed travel trailers or large motorhomes. Some smaller Class C motorhomes may be accommodated in an alternative parking area with prior approval. If you’re unsure whether your vehicle is suitable, please contact us before booking.
Allowed rigs: pop-up campers, class B RVs, campervans, cars, truck campers, and rooftop tents
Our mountain driveway is narrow and winding, with steep sections, tight curves, overhanging trees, and some significant drop-offs. It's best suited for camper vans, Class B vans, truck campers, rooftop-tent vehicles, and small, low-profile trailers. We've successfully accommodated large Sprinter vans, teardrop trailers, utility trailers, and even small Class C motorhomes. However, conventional travel trailers, fifth wheels, and large motorhomes are generally unsuitable. **Vehicle dimensions and maneuverability matter more than length alone.** Some larger vehicles may be accommodated using alternative parking areas. **Please contact us BEFORE booking if you're bringing a camper, RV, or trailer.** Let us know your vehicle's length, width, height, and whether you're towing anything. We'll help determine whether your setup can safely navigate the driveway and where you can park. We know our driveway well and are happy to help you plan a safe, comfortable arrival!
Back-in site
Parking area is not pull-through. Guests may pull in or back into the site and will exit the same way they entered. For the best privacy and campsite layout, we recommend positioning your rig with the entry/awning side facing the river. Our rural driveway has tight curves and a drop-off near the river, so the site is best suited for campervans/Class B vans, truck campers, rooftop-tent vehicles, and low-profile pop-up campers. Conventional hard-sided travel trailers, fifth wheels, toy haulers, and larger motorhomes are not suitable. First-time arrival during daylight is strongly recommended. We’re happy to help guide you into the site upon arrival if needed.
Accommodates slideouts
Slideouts can be accommodated on appropriately sized rigs. This site is intended for campervans/Class B vans, truck campers, rooftop-tent vehicles, and low-profile pop-up campers—not large RVs. If your setup has an unusually large slideout, please contact us before booking.
Surface type: Grass or field
Surface levelness: Flat
The site is generally level and has worked well for camper vans and similar rigs without additional leveling. As with most natural ground, there may be slight variations.
No class A RVs, class C RVs, travel trailers, fifth wheels, and toy haulers

Campfires allowed
Private. Campfires are allowed in the designated fire setup when local fire restrictions and weather conditions permit. Depending on season, wind, and fire danger, guests may be asked to use the provided Solo Stove instead of the open fire ring. Firewood is not included; prepared firewood bundles with kindling and fatwood are available for purchase, or guests may bring their own locally sourced firewood. Fires must never be left unattended and must be fully extinguished when not in use.
Toilet available
Composting toilet. Private enclosed composting toilet with a contained 5-gallon bucket system and cover material. Toilet paper and handwashing supplies are provided.
Pets allowed
On leash. Pets at MAD Moon Hideout We love animals, and well-behaved pets are welcome at MAD Moon Hideout! One of the charms of living in our little mountain village is its free-range atmosphere. Our own dogs, as well as neighborhood dogs, may wander through the property to say hello. We also have resident cats, so your pets should be comfortable around other animals. Please let us know in advance if your pet is reactive or has difficulty with unfamiliar dogs or cats. **For everyone's safety, visiting pets must remain leashed or securely contained and may not roam freely.** This is especially important because we share our mountain home with wildlife, including coyotes, skunks, and occasional bears. Please don't leave pets unattended outdoors, and always secure pet food and other attractants when not in use. We ask that you clean up after your pets and respect the other animals that call this place home. **Need a little pet-free adventure?** We offer optional pet check-in and walking services so you can explore the area while your furry companion stays at camp. We also have a secure dog enclosure available to rent for guests who would like a little extra freedom for their pets. Just ask us about availability and pricing when booking! We want your pets to enjoy their mountain getaway as much as you do.
Potable water available
Spigot, hose. Our potable water comes from our private well and is the same clean, naturally sweet well water we use at the house. A drinking-water-safe hose is provided for guest use.
Showers available
Hot water . Shower Facilities Our private outdoor shower is currently under construction, and we don’t have a definite completion date yet. In the meantime, guests are welcome to arrange a scheduled shower inside our home, accessible through a separate private entrance for your convenience and privacy. Winter considerations: We currently have one heated water hose to prevent freezing. If you’re using it for your camper’s water hookup, we won’t be able to provide a separate outdoor shower connection. We’re working toward having a dedicated private outdoor shower available year-round. Until then, we’re happy to coordinate indoor shower times with our guests.
Bins available
Trash bin. Wildlife is active in the area, including skunks and occasional bears. All trash and food waste must be kept inside the provided tightly lidded container and secured whenever unattended or overnight. Please do not leave food, trash, coolers, or scented items outside.
Cooking equipment present
Grill over firepit, bbq, private. Outdoor cooking area includes a propane grill and table for food prep. The grill is included with the campsite; guests may bring their own propane or purchase propane from us. Camp stove, cookware, and additional cooking gear are available with our optional camping-equipment packages. No full kitchen or dedicated kitchen sink at this time.
Wifi available
Reliable high-speed Wi-Fi is available throughout the property, including the campsite and outdoor common areas, via our property-wide AyrMesh network.
Hot Tub present
Wood-fired hot tub available for guests. Rated for up to 4 people, with 3 deeper seats and one raised seat/step; most comfortable for 2–3 adults. Because it is wood-fired, it requires advance heating and preparation. Full hot tub information is provided to confirmed guests in the Mad Moon Hideout welcome guide.
Picnic table absent
The campsite includes two outdoor tables with seating for 4: a small round glass table with chairs and a wooden dining/prep table with chairs. There is no traditional picnic table.
Laundry absent
No playground
