2 nights at Bluff Hollow Camp on the Root River

Another great stay at Bluff Hollow! We enjoyed the peaceful quiet, did a little kayaking and caught a decent amount of small fish. This site is still my son's absolute favorite, we will return again.

1 night at Bluff Hollow Camp on the Root River

This place is really quite magical. Quiet, clear water, lots of wildlife. Unfortunately for me, most of my time was spent getting my van unstuck. ****I do not recommend driving down the hill that goes to the lower site, unless you feel very confident about your 4wheel drive. My 2WD van couldn't make it back up the muddy hill. I had to call a tow company with a winch. The host was very responsive and did recommend a local tow company. On a happy note, my dog loved running up and down the hill and getting wet in the creek!

Weekend Trip to Bluff Hollow Camp on the Root River

We loved camping at Bluff Hollow and will definitely be back! Eric's directions and site information was very clear, so we knew just what to expect. The land itself is very pretty and we felt completely spoiled having such a large space to ourselves. We had two cars and two tents and were able to drive down to the lower site to set up camp. Both sites looked beautiful, but staying by the river was an absolute treat! There's no picnic table by the river, but it was worth the small inconvenience. We enjoyed river play, strolling through the woods, the wildlife sounds, and the tranquil space. I am already looking forward to going back!

Well loved the site! Easy check in, Donna was really friendly, very easy to get to. Tent pad was mostly flat, nice big fire pit, picnic table was nice, outhouse was nice and clean, lots of space to walk! The barn bathrooms were really nice as well. Was a really good spot for the price!

Weekend Trip to Gossman Goat Ranch

Cathy and her family were a wonderful host to us. The cabin (hand built by them!) is very comfortable and well/insulated. The forest surrounding the property is beautiful with lots of walking areas. Their kids showed us around the farm and it was so fun to watch how well they care for their animals. The goats were friendly and a highlight of the trip. We would love to visit again and recommend this location to anyone wanting a getaway camping experience.

We love this campground. Quiet, beautiful, lots of space, and has what we need. There is so much to see and do in the surrounding area making it an ideal location.

I loved the solitude at the edge. Highway and airport sounds aside it was very peacefulm. The stars were beautiful and enjoyed the wildlife. Sites are just as described and the concrete slab, AstroTurf tent pad and saw were nice additions to the site. I had a great time and will be back.

We absolutely loved our stay on the trout stream.Was beautiful location deep in the valley.The best part is we had it all to ourselves.That made it quiet and peaceful so you could hear the many bird songs and of course the babbling brook! We are booking again soon

5 nights at Bluff Hollow Camp on the Root River

We had a fantastic weekend! Perfect for full-@$$ campers. The site is peaceful, private, and well-maintained. There’s an upper and lower camp area with a pretty significant hill between them, so plan for a bit of a climb if you move between spots. The fire pit and picnic table were perfect for cooking, and the host was great—friendly and responsive. Recommend for anyone looking to truly unplug and enjoy some quiet nature time.

This was a beautiful spot! The creek was crystal clear, cool, and refreshing to go along with a background with the bluffs. For those of us who prefer simplistic and the way camping should be, this is an ideal spot.

The English Pale Campground (21+)

The campground and rental house will open May 15, 2025. Sites/house can be booked 6 months in advance. The English Pale Campground and Resort is located along the Black River in Jackson County, 1 mile west of the Village of Melrose. The entire property only allows guests and occupants who are 21 or older. The main campground is 70 feet above the river. We have 5 rustic (no hook-ups) RV/Travel Trailer/Tent sites, a fully furnished “Manor” House, a travel trailer as well as 2 rustic beach sites that are located along the river. The property is a total of 70 acres, which includes the 4+ acre beach, a mile of river front and trails through the woods that connect them all. The English Pale opened in 2021 and is a developing property that offers a reasonable expectation of privacy. We are an adult only property, but not a nudist campground. We do not prohibit our guests from nudity for the purpose of sunbathing on the beach, campsites or sundeck, but nudity is not allowed in general common areas. Gossman Goat Ranch

We have a small hobby farm with lots of very tame animals. We have 42 acres to roams with lots of trails within the woods that are filled with aged oak trees and many young maple trees. Our property is filled with lots of wild flowers and wildlife. We are locate 3 miles from the root river if you enjoy fishing or going for a float down the river. There are two caves in our area that are a must see while you are visiting. I you like to hike there is a state park 14 minutes from us that have many miles of hiking trails and horse trails. If you are more the small town strolling type of person we have lots of small towns around us that are filled with shops and lots of great food! There is a large system of bike trails in our area that make a very fun way to check out some of the small towns. If you have a family with kids we have a lot of fun activities you can do with your kids, like spending time with the goats, chickens and ducks, playing on our playground, or taking a nice walk through the woods looking for fossils!

Shady Rest Acres

Once the site of the historic V.J. Fetzner Brewery from the late 19th Century. The land is now used as a hobby farm, honey bee sanctuary and nursery to a unique tree species normally not found in Southeastern Minnesota. Remnants of the brewery are still visible. Foundation walls outline the massive structure of the brewery. Nestled in the center of the foundation is the entrance to the sixty-seven foot deep cave that once held barrels of beer and can be accessed by canoe only. Hops have been located on the property and are believed to be ancestors of those raised to make the beer once stored in the cave. The pond that provides access to the cave was dug out in the early 1990's to create a fish out for the Spring Falls Trout Farm that used to exist across the highway. Some of the original brood stock still exist and continue to naturally stock the pond. It is not uncommon to see fish that are five to ten pounds in size. We do not allow fishing from our pond. The residents house is built to scale to the original brew master's house. While the house is only twenty-four years old it looks as though you have taken a step back in time. The name Shady Rest was given to the house by the Brew Master's wife. We thought it was appropriate to keep the name alive. Shady Rest Acres is comprised of twenty-three acres of beautiful woodlands and pasture that are protected forever in the Minnesota Land Trust. The pasture is home to Scottish Highlander cows, two miniature donkeys, five sheep, four goats, honey bees and a flock of chickens. Scottish Highlanders were selected for both their grazing and browsing abilities. They are very docile and make excellent pasture mates to the smaller species sharing the pasture. The cows are excellent forest managers. They clear out invasive species such as Honey Suckle, Buckthorn, and Barberry which can often be difficult to manage. A guided tour with the host can be taken to meet the pasture animals. The forest is comprised of many tree species. Some are unique in that they normally do not grow in this region of Minnesota. The yellow birch is a species normally found in Northern Minnesota. It's bark is golden in color and glistens when the sun hits it just right. We have a cluster of several yellow birch including one that is so big that the bark no longer looks golden but instead is grey and very rough. Years ago the largest of these trees made excellent wood for turning bowls. Blue Beech (musclewood) can also be found on the property. As the name indicates the bark is shaped like muscles. Songbirds and some other species will use different parts of the tree as a food source. Towering white pines also speckle the landscape. Mother pine requires at least two humans arm lengths to encircle the whole tree. She is a favorite resting spot for the barred owl. There is oak, elm, maple, ceders, poplars and numerous other species. Honey bees are an integral part of the landscape. We partnered with a friend and started raising honey bees two years ago in order to do our part to keep pollinators thriving. Their hives are located in the pasture where it has the perfect amount of early morning sun to get them moving and afternoon shade to balance out the summer heat. It is not uncommon to see them pollinating garden plants, trees and wild flowers around the property. One of their favorite feeding spots is the acre and a half prairie which offers a range of plants including big blue stem, wild indigo and baby blue stem, to name a few. Not only are honey bees essential to the food chain but they also provide a very enriching experience when they are observed moving about their hives. There is nothing more relaxing and fascinating than watching these amazing creatures.
