IMPORTANT NOTIFICATION: The river edge erosion wall construction is complete. The area is being prepared to have additional river sites added sometime in 2026 depending on vegetation growth. The entire Beach (R3 & R4) will be closed to Campers starting October 1. This is due to hunting season starting. Campsites in the main campground will be still available, but guests are not allowed on the lower 40. Contact Cal or check our Facebook page and web site for more information. The campground and rental house will open about May 15, each year. The English Pale Campground is located along the Black River in Jackson County, 1 mile west of the Village of Melrose. The entire property only allows guests and occupants who are 21 or older. Sites/house can be booked 6 months in advance. The main campground is 70 feet above the river. We have 5 rustic (no hook-ups) RV/Travel Trailer/Tent sites, a fully furnished “Manor” House, a travel trailer as well as 2 rustic beach sites that are located along the river. The property is a total of 70 acres, which includes the 4+ acre beach, a mile of river front and trails through the woods that connect them all.
The English Pale opened in 2021 and is a developing property. In late summer of 2025 an erosion wall was built along the Black River. This included clearing of a section of the forest, building a gravel access road and an riprap river wall to prevent further erosion. Since 2016 over 60 feet of the riverbank has washed away.
Our property offers a reasonable expectation of privacy and we do not offer day passes as our target guests are campers. We are an adult only property, but not a nudist campground, as that is not our central theme. We do not prohibit our guests from nudity for the purpose of sunbathing on the beach, campsites or sundeck, but nudity is not allowed in general common areas. Part of our nature is allowing discreet nudity for tanning purposes. While we target couples for time together, singles and groups are welcome. This is NOT a party campground, our goal is to let you connect with nature.

We have a lovely piece of property to come enjoy a getaway at. We enjoy all of the peace and quiet around here. The night sky is unbeatable in my eyes. We have a small hobby farm with lots of very tame animals. We have 42 acres to roams with lots of trails within the woods that are filled with aged oak trees and many young maple trees. Our property is filled with lots of wild flowers and wildlife.
We are locate 3 miles from the root river if you enjoy fishing or going for a float down the river. There are two caves in our area that are a must see while you are visiting. I you like to hike there is a state park 14 minutes from us that have many miles of hiking trails and horse trails.
If you are more the small town strolling type of person we have lots of small towns around us that are filled with shops and lots of great food! There is a large system of bike trails in our area that make a very fun way to check out some of the small towns.
If you have a family with kids we have a lot of fun activities you can do with your kids, like spending time with the goats, chickens and ducks, playing on our playground, or taking a nice walk through the woods looking for fossils!

This was my 4th time at the Edge and no less lovely than the other 3 times. I ended up back at the cabin, but would happily stay at any of the tent sites on Edward's property. Can hardly wait to return next spring!

I would definitely recommend Gossman Goat Farm! It has beautiful views and it was fun to see the goats and chickens. The directions were clear and the sites are clean and well organized. Cathy was very helpful and friendly and her boys ran and gathered eggs.. A great family run business, and the handmade soap was a wonderful souvenir!:)

Third time at The Edge charming rustic cabin since earlier this summer. It was wonderful to see the seasonal differences of the surrounding corn and soy bean fields over the months. Other than the host Edward stopping by on the day of arrival to show me the ropes of the wood stove, my dog and I had complete solitude for four nights. Like my last two visits, I hit the weather jackpot with sunny breezy days near 65-70 degrees and mild nights. Hard to imagine tiring of this sweet place. Edward has been timely in responding to all my questions and for those who aren't familiar with the general area, everything you can imagine for your camping/cabin/food needs are about 10 minutes away (Fleet Farm, Menards, various fast and slow food restaurants, etc.).

As stated in every other review, the camping spot is very scenic, nature filled and beautiful.
Gregory is great as a host as he let us have our privacy, but checked in as we were driving or walking by.
Just a note to get to the site: when you pull in the driveway, turn left and drive in front of the house. Then right after the house take a right and that trail leads you back into the woods by the river. I think he has a map that works great.
Lacrosse and Lake Crescent are not far from this site if you wanna make a trip into town.
The site itself is very open no backing up as needed. Just pull in where you wanna be. Big enough for a couple of campers and tents.

We camped in a tent on site 1 and had a great time! We did hear a few planes, but it was well worth it! The site was flat and close to the bathroom (which was really nice and stocked). Edward was kind both in communication through the app and in person. There was a great view of sprawling fields and beautiful stars. We took our four young children and it was so nice to have it close to Rochester, yet feel so removed to really enjoy some family time. Our kids had the quintessential camping experience they've been longing for months. I would highly recommend coming to The Edge!

The Edge was a great place... lots of private space. Spots are close, however, there are so many trees and brush that you can't really see others. Nice open areas, corn fields, port-a-pottie type restroom. Dogs loved being off leash. Easy to find. Only downside was the airport near by. A lot of private planes flew the night I was there.

A Phenomenally Beautiful Campsite with a lot of Area to Set up your Camp. The Streams were Gorgeous and Had Beautiful Sunsets.
Gregory Drove to our Campsite in the early morning, waking us up, to Advise my Husband and Myself of the Rising Waters and the Next Huge Storm Surge coming our way!
This is Unheard of, That A Man not only Checked out his Land, he Informed us of the Big Storms and Concerning Weather On the Front.
Also, Delivered our Farm Fresh Eggs to our Campsite!

Long story short: great site, great host, 100% recommend.
BIG site. Lots of room for either multiple tents or just choosing a perfect location for a single tent. Very level ground as well.
The trout stream is small, but very fishable. I had a blast fly fishing the water right at the campsite, as well as the mile of public water upstream of the site.
The site is private, but I wouldn’t call it “secluded”. There are a couple other houses and a main road nearby. I would compare the general noise level similar to what you’d find in a suburban neighborhood. In my opinion, this is actually more acceptable than what I’ve found in popular state park campgrounds, which often have “party noise” later into the night, and much closer neighbors making noise. Once the sun goes down, this site is quiet and sleep came easy.
I opted to have an early check in time as well as a dozen fresh eggs from the camp host’s chickens and ducks. I had fresh duck eggs for breakfast for the first time…they were great!
The camp host couldn’t have been better. Just a regular guy that didn’t interfere with my stay at all. Communication through the app was very good and really all that was needed. I did speak with him briefly in person and it was a pleasant conversation.

3 nights at Gossman Goat Ranch
Camping on Cathy's property was fantastic. She met us at the gate to the property and showed us the way to the campsite. We had reserved a tent site, but debris had recently fallen down so she allowed us to stay at the cabin site. The views were lovely, the toilet was clean and easily accessible, and we felt perfectly at home. We had plenty of privacy and the goats were lovely (our favorite was Allie).

This was my second trip to the cabin at The Edge; it will likely not be my last. This is one of my favorite places to visit! First, a few things to consider: The entire property has no electric or potable water. The ceiling lights inside the cabin are VERY dim, so bring good supplemental light. The exterior light over the door is also VERY low light. The lovely hanging garden lights around the parameter of the site are lovely but dim solar lights. Second, bring something to use for curtains. There are four windows in total; I use a cut up light weight canvas painter's cloth cut into quarters and they work really well! I tie them back during the daytime for added light. Third, this cabin in RUSTIC, in that there are well-used (not fresh) sheets on the beds and is quite dusty. I bring my own fitted sheet and blankets/pillows. Some folks might like to use a sleeping bag instead. Fourth - there was recent rain and lots of mud; one family using a tent site got stuck - they were driving a van rig and pulling a car - ultimately, they had to call a pro towing service and it ate up a couple of hours of their day and a few hundred $. I imagine this can be remedied by contacting the owner first to hear about conditions. This is a beautiful little area that I cherish. There is airplane and car noise, but I was easily able to block it out and enjoy the birds. On the edge of a wooded area and up-close-and-personal to acres of corn and soybean fields. I can hardly wait to return.
