Weekend Trip to Ranch Retreat Camping

To say that I had an absolutely amazing time would be an understatement, but I can find no other words that truly fit! I'd like to keep it a secret so I could always have it to myself! Big Trout Creek / Ranch Retreat Camping checked all my boxes. BEAUTIFUL surroundings, a quaint babbling brook, quiet, serene, clean, electricity, gorgeous sunrise, the list goes on. The only thing that would have made it better, is if I could have stayed longer.... and trust me, I honestly thought about calling in sick at work on Monday!! Jolene is the hostess with the mostess! My friend and I had the whole place to ourselves and we felt so welcome. I've never seen a place be more pristine and clean. Even the little porta potty was immaculate and actually smelled good! Lots of little extras topped it off... tiny lanterns in the trees that lit up at night, available firewood (only $5!), gorgeous landscaping, a nice porch on the shed to sit and play games, and much more. Bottom line....just GO!! I know I'll be back for sure (and I'll stay longer!). Georgie

We absolutely love Jolene’s place! From the extension cord being ready for me to hook up to electric, to the firewood I ordered being at my site, to the immaculate grounds and the little fairy lights hung in the trees, Jolene and her boys’ attention to detail is amazing! This is absolutely our favorite getaway!

2 nights at O'Dalaigh Hideaway

I stayed here with some friends, and we had an absolute blast! The site was beautiful, clean, and well organized. It was really nice to have firewood available, and the bathroom was a nice feature. The campfire right next to the river was beautiful, and it was very enjoyable jumping in the river!

1 night at The Camps at the Vineyards

Carl, the host, was very helpful and accommodating. After seeing I had smaller rig, he allowed me to change to a better spot. It was a nice and peaceful stay.

3 nights at The Auntie's Grove at Moonstone

The land is absolutely beautiful. The pond felt like swimming in a magic hidden grove. The camp fire wood was freshly split and bone dry. Burned long and hot. The only bad thing were the BUGS. Be prepared in every possible way to combat them. We camp a lot and it was probably the worst we have ever encountered. We left a day early because of how much worse the bugs got after a night of rain. The only refuge was inside the hot tent. Richard and Audrey were lovely hosts, checking in with us to make sure we had everything we needed every once in a while. Would highly recommend this stay, but maybe in a less buggy time of year.

Weekend Trip to Ranch Retreat Camping

We enjoyed our stay at the very peaceful land with amazing views around us. Our kids enjoyed the cows and sand pile with toys. I enjoyed the evenings watching as the lanterns scattered around the property began lighting up and the fireflies danced around. Just magical!

Weekend Trip to The Double J

We stayed 2 nights in campsite #3. These campsites were quite spacious! Nothing compared to a state park or campground where the sites are super close. Lots of shade and lots of hammocking trees as well, right next to the river! We did the float on our paddle boards from the covered bridge to the campsite, the water was quite high as we were unable to touch bottom. There was a blockage 5-10 minutes into the float so if you plan to do this make sure to stay to the right side of the river and there is a little path to get through! Definitely make sure you have your life jacket and good water shoes on as the water is moving pretty fast! This site is right by the port-a potty and fire wood container which was nice as well. Jeff the host was super friendly and helpful! He met us as soon as we got there and explained a couple of things and answered any questions we had. We definitely would recommend this campsite and will probably be back again!

Weekend Trip to O'Dalaigh Hideaway

Don’t let the smaller size of this Hipcamp fool you, this spot is awesome! We stayed right on the edge of the river, and the soothing sound of the flowing water made for the perfect backdrop all weekend long. It was incredibly quiet and serene; even though there are a couple of cabins nearby, we hardly knew they were there. It truly felt like we had our own little slice of nature to ourselves. The site was clean, easy to access, and offered just the right mix of comfort and wild. Whether you're looking to relax, fish, paddle, or just listen to the river with a cup of coffee in hand, this place delivers. Highly recommend for anyone wanting a peaceful escape. We’ll absolutely be back!

We absolutely loved camping here! This is now our second time back and we will return more. The camping area is pristine, and secluded. The goats are absolutely amazing! And this is in the perfect location if you wanna go to the local small towns throughout your trip as well.

Weekend Trip to Woods and Meadows Farm

I was so excited for this getaway - and everything about this place exceeded my expectations!! The cabin was the PERFECT serene escape - from the cozy interior with everything we could’ve needed for comfort/ambiance, cooking yummy meals, and space for reading/games - to the beautiful views of the pond/wildflowers/stars over the field at night - to the labyrinth of well maintained trails to explore on the property. My dog had the time of his life exploring, and us humans are leaving well rested and hoping to return again soon!

4 nights at The Double J

Jeff and Julie were so so friendly and kind. I stayed 4 days and it rained for 4 days. But I was prepared and stuck it out just relaxing in my tent with the pitter-pat of the rain. They checked on me often during the week. The campsites are al very nice with a good deal of space In-between and they are all right on the Zumbro River. Lovely property and well kept. I will return! 1 night at Belle Creek Bluff

It was a very sweet setting. We saw incredible amount of native MN woodland plants, and so many kinds of birds, butterflies, dragonflies, and had an amazing firefly light show both nights. The green canopy cabin was a perfect hangout, even in the rain. The only issue we had is we had to cross Belle Creek to get to the cabin, and after 2 days of heavy rain, the creek had a much stronger current and was quite a bit deeper than when we arrived, so the return was very tricky, even a little scary!

5 nights at Floodwood Municipal Campground

It was a quiet little area near the river, with shaded areas for camping.

4 nights at Grand Marais Get-A-Way

We enjoyed the location and privacy of this site, and it was great proximity from down town and nearby hiking trails. The firepit was on uneven ground, and we weren't able to get a camp chair near it. We enjoyed the quietness and seclusion of the site. Would recommend anyone with campers to bring leveling blocks as the ground is uneven (we brought some and it worked good), and every one to bring a lot of bugspray as the deep north woods are riddled with insects. Overall, I think this site is appropriately priced priced for what you get.

Shady Rest Acres

Once the site of the historic V.J. Fetzner Brewery from the late 19th Century. The land is now used as a hobby farm, honey bee sanctuary and nursery to a unique tree species normally not found in Southeastern Minnesota. Remnants of the brewery are still visible. Foundation walls outline the massive structure of the brewery. Nestled in the center of the foundation is the entrance to the sixty-seven foot deep cave that once held barrels of beer and can be accessed by canoe only. Hops have been located on the property and are believed to be ancestors of those raised to make the beer once stored in the cave. The pond that provides access to the cave was dug out in the early 1990's to create a fish out for the Spring Falls Trout Farm that used to exist across the highway. Some of the original brood stock still exist and continue to naturally stock the pond. It is not uncommon to see fish that are five to ten pounds in size. We do not allow fishing from our pond. The residents house is built to scale to the original brew master's house. While the house is only twenty-four years old it looks as though you have taken a step back in time. The name Shady Rest was given to the house by the Brew Master's wife. We thought it was appropriate to keep the name alive. Shady Rest Acres is comprised of twenty-three acres of beautiful woodlands and pasture that are protected forever in the Minnesota Land Trust. The pasture is home to Scottish Highlander cows, two miniature donkeys, five sheep, four goats, honey bees and a flock of chickens. Scottish Highlanders were selected for both their grazing and browsing abilities. They are very docile and make excellent pasture mates to the smaller species sharing the pasture. The cows are excellent forest managers. They clear out invasive species such as Honey Suckle, Buckthorn, and Barberry which can often be difficult to manage. A guided tour with the host can be taken to meet the pasture animals. The forest is comprised of many tree species. Some are unique in that they normally do not grow in this region of Minnesota. The yellow birch is a species normally found in Northern Minnesota. It's bark is golden in color and glistens when the sun hits it just right. We have a cluster of several yellow birch including one that is so big that the bark no longer looks golden but instead is grey and very rough. Years ago the largest of these trees made excellent wood for turning bowls. Blue Beech (musclewood) can also be found on the property. As the name indicates the bark is shaped like muscles. Songbirds and some other species will use different parts of the tree as a food source. Towering white pines also speckle the landscape. Mother pine requires at least two humans arm lengths to encircle the whole tree. She is a favorite resting spot for the barred owl. There is oak, elm, maple, ceders, poplars and numerous other species. Honey bees are an integral part of the landscape. We partnered with a friend and started raising honey bees two years ago in order to do our part to keep pollinators thriving. Their hives are located in the pasture where it has the perfect amount of early morning sun to get them moving and afternoon shade to balance out the summer heat. It is not uncommon to see them pollinating garden plants, trees and wild flowers around the property. One of their favorite feeding spots is the acre and a half prairie which offers a range of plants including big blue stem, wild indigo and baby blue stem, to name a few. Not only are honey bees essential to the food chain but they also provide a very enriching experience when they are observed moving about their hives. There is nothing more relaxing and fascinating than watching these amazing creatures.

Spirits of the Forest

How we ended up in Knife Lake Township on 81 acres of forested land. We began looking for land in late fall of 1996. After several months of searching, we happened upon a tiny newspaper ad for 81 acres of land described as "Beautiful, secluded, mature hardwoods, tall pines w/creek & beaver pond, many gd bldg sites & great hunting". We toured the property, covered in almost two feet of snow, on a snowmobile in January 1997 and fell in love with it. We have been stewards of this piece of land for 25 years and are still enamored of its beauty and diversity. We are lulled to sleep by the sounds of owls and bullfrogs and the distant yipping of coyotes. Spring through fall we are often awakened by the rattling, honking of sandhill cranes and a wide variety of bird songs. Besides deer and lots of small critters, we've seen bear, bobcat, rafters of turkeys, quail, grouse, pheasant, owls, hawks and eagles. The sky, on a clear night, is breathtaking. We have always visualized sharing the land with others, so come and immerse yourself in this bountiful space.

The Double J

Welcome to the Double J! Of the 71 acres we own, about half is tillable and the other half is woods and pastures for our horses. Within that, there is a beautiful secluded 3-acre meadow nestled down along along a beautiful 1,200 foot stretch of the Zumbro River where we have 5 spacious tent/RV campsites. While the campsites are all adjacent to each other along the river, they are each very spacious (the smallest being 100' wide and 75' deep), with some mature trees scattered around. Each sites (except Site #1) is able to accommodate up to 8 people and more than one tent or RV. There is a small meadow above all the sites where campers can play catch or other games. We provide and maintain a centrally located outhouse and keep the entire area mowed throughout the year. All sites offer great shade trees (perfectly spaced for hanging up a hammock) and access to the river - great for those hot summer days! Water activities to be enjoyed include fishing, swimming, canoeing, kayaking, paddle boarding and tubing (equipment not included). Some campers will drop in upstream at the Covered Bridge Park and float down to their campsite. The Zumbro River, especially in the fishing hole, offers great fishing including Trout, Small-mouth, Red-horse, and an occasional Northern or Sauger. Campers are welcome to to meander out into our pastures to pet our two horses, Shiloh and Champ. Also, we are just over a mile from town where you can visit Covered Bridge Park which has a Frisbee golf course and a nice play area for younger kids. Reserving adjacent sites, or all of the sites, makes for the ideal setting for a large family or group camp-out. In order to prevent overcrowding, we do reserve the right to limit number of sites, or campers per site based on overall parties/campers in the camping area. We will notify you if there are any limits at the time of your booking. We enjoy being able to share our property with others, and it is our desire to promote a safe, peaceful, family-friendly environment, therefore, be sure to note, we do have a NO ALCOHOL policy. PLEASE NOTE: Be sure to read the "RV Details" on the site information page as the road to the camping area may limit the type or size of RV due to a couple dips, a sharper curve, and it's steeper slope. Also, keep in mind, we reserve the right to cancel any reservations due to heavy rains or floods that may require our sites some additional time to dry out sufficiently. We do not have firewood available at the campground; please plan ahead to bring firewood with you. Sites are priced for one tent, please let us know if you need to have more than one tent. Kids under 16 camping with their parents do not count in pricing. A map of the land is in the photos and shows locations of sites, parking and more. All Sites are Walk-In! We have a cart you may use to haul gear in. This campground is managed by Stephen and Molly on land owned by them and their father Ted. In 1961, Ted's parents bought this farm. In addition to farming they also operated a trail riding stable here. Over the years, the arable land has been sold, but we retained the wooded areas which are twice crossed by creeks. About 25 years ago, a 60 acre county park bordering the south and west sides of our land was created. We are very excited to host campers as a way to preserve and share this beautiful property.

Camp Palustria is on the edge of a beautiful marsh within 75 feet of a trout stream. It is about 1000ft off of the Superior Hiking Trail. The campsite is primitive which includes fire pit with grill, table, and composting outhouse. The site is about a 600ft hike from the road where you'll park. The first 400ft of the trail is a swamp with a simple elevated boardwalk through most of it. 95% of the time is it passable with hiking boats or street shoes, but there might be some muddy spots. Dispersed winter camping is also available. This campsite was featured on NPR Marketplace Campsite is closed during hunting season. About the property: Trembling Gardens is my 10 acre swamp camp paradise in the rural suburb of Rice Lake. The property is about 20 minutes away from downtown Duluth and Canal Park and has easy access to the North Shore.

Minutes away from access to Cuyuna trails, Crosby, Ironton and Emily, as well as nearby Nisswa and Crosslake. This central location offers access to any and all amenities. Our campsites are nestled underneath a canopy of mixed wood forest. We have birch, poplar, maple, and a variety of pine. Nearby you will find our newly finished outhouse, complete with a portable shower and natural light. You will have access to parking near or next to your site with plenty of space to spread out and enjoy! Our property features a beautiful variety of trees and plenty of trails throughout our land with wildlife you might see or hear. It might be the hoot of an owl or the drum of a grouse! You will also hear the "buck wheat" and the "chee-chee" of our guineas calling for each other. Our beautiful forest is our main feature. Since 95% of our land is wooded, we enjoy the great beauty and majesty of the trees. giant is hidden on the northeastern side of our property. His beautiful branches tower over our trails and we have cleared a spot there to rest. His lovely "Princess" is near the back of the main house. She is surrounded by strong pines that stand guard through our long cold winters. Our property extends, via trail, to state land and the Mud Hen Creek. The views are breathtaking! Please come and bring your family and friends! Our campsites' proximity would create a great weekend getaway for a retreat event or a family reunion, as well as a quiet romantic weekend! Off site: We have Long Lake public access 5.8 miles down our road. Mud Hen Lake, Half Moon Lake, Pleasant Lake, Elliot Lake (all with public access) are just a few within a 15 minute drive. We are also within an hour drive from either Duluth or Two Harbors. The Range Cities are charming and you could visit several in one day. Other wonderful things to do in this area are walking or biking the Mesabi Trail. The Redhead Mt. Bike Park is within 45 minutes. The Soudan Underground Mine will be open summer of 2024! There are many local museums, parks, and more to discover on the Iron Range! Here at home we raise chickens, ducks, and guinea fowl. We also have a Catahola Leopard dog named Hickory. She enjoys roaming our Luna Light Trails on the off season. When I was a child, I lived on a church camp property in Uruguay, South America. This plot of land had a grove of the most beautiful, tall, eucalyptus trees in the neighborhood. These trees were the home to Monk Parakeets. These small green parrots are the only members of the parrot family to build stick nests and to nest colonially. Needless to say, they were very loud, but one of my favorite childhood memories! This little plot on the Minnesota map has been our home for the last three and a half years. We have enjoyed our woods and so will you!
