A Touch of Hardwick History
In 1686, Captain Samuel Ruggles and seven men purchased this land from the Nipmuck people for twenty British pounds. His grandson, Brigadier General Timothy Ruggles, became a notorious Loyalist — driven from Hardwick at dawn by his own brother Benjamin, who warned him: “Cross today and you will never cross again alive.” His daughter Bathsheba became the first woman executed in the newly independent United States, for murdering her husband — told in Murdered by His Wife by Deborah Navas.

If getting lost is indeed what you’d like to do, you can do so by land or water. Getting lost by canoe on the pond is highly recommended, although getting lost in the forest is equally pleasurable. I'm about 20 minutes from Mount Wachusett and 5 minutes from the Quabbin. Lots of hiking all around, including from my farm (a nice 3 mile walk through a wildlife preserve). Worcester is about a 30 minute drive. Lot's of lakes all around with good fishing. The town of Barre has some excellent restaurants, a grocery store, hardware store, etc. This is an organic farm so you must use biodegradable products in you use my dump station. No bleach11 We close for the winter season from November 1 through the end of March.

Our 2 acre property and house is located in the center of the small town of Leverett. We have two sites, a private camping spot located down by the stream, and a yurt at the edge of the yard. We are near a paved road with moderate traffic.
The property abuts many acres of woods and there are a number of great walking trails nearby. A half-mile walk behind the house takes you through the forest to an outlook on Leverett Pond.
The Peace Pagoda is just a few miles up the road. Other nearby destinations include Cushman Market and Cafe, the Montague Bookmill, and Mt. Toby waterfall, caves, and lookout tower.
Leverett Pond has a public boat launch nearby. We have canoes, paddles, and lifejackets available for rent--inquire for details!

Our property is 85 very private acres with an open field surrounded by forest and open wooded area with many trails. The forest is very diverse including some old growth maples and birches, as well as hemlock and pine trees. The campsites are at the edge of the field set back into the woods. I have recently added sand and gravel to improve drainage since the heavy rain we have had last year. We have a portable composting toilet outhouse and a hot outdoor shower. Feel free to explore all of the trails on foot or mountain bike. You may see some turkeys or deer out there. There is a small pond with lots of frogs and salamanders near the camping area, and a few seasonal streams on the property. You can hike a one mile loop on our newest trail. It is medium difficulty because of the hillside it is built on so hiking boots are recommended unless you are on a mountain bike. Rock walls built in the mid 1800s circle the property almost entirely so the borders are easy to see.
The Deerfield river is a few miles away where you can fish for trout or go for a swim or kayak. The Connecticut river and the green river are about 15 minutes away as well. We have tubes, a canoe, and a kayak that are available to rent for some floating! Historic Deerfield village and Yankee Candle store and factory are about 10 minutes away. We are about 20 minutes from Northampton and Amherst.

Such a good time! Beautiful field, nice wooden platform tucked away in the woods for your tent. Fire pit and picnic table was outside the woods along the tree line of the field at night that was perfect because you got to see the stars and area was nicely lit by the moon and very little bugs, during the day it unfortunately was very hot and would have been nice to have that stuff in an area inside the woods. But, I would still ABSOLUTELY go back, just will definitely bring an easy up tent for shade! The pictures and ad for the site showed all this so it was my fault we didn’t have the tent for shade. David was very informative with directions and any information we needed. They had a farm stand with meat, maple products, and cute handmade items. Very nice to have and I got the maple BBQ sauce, highly recommended it was delicious!!!

This is our 21st Hipcamp stay all around the country and this was among the best! The stay was absolutely magical from beginning to end. They maintain this property beautifully.
We stayed in a tent in the woods and were completely private the whole time. The outdoor shower is a wonderful experience--bring a friend! ;) The wood-burning hottub was so relaxing and not to be missed. We cooked all our meals over their perfect firepits and they have really great quality wood on-site for burning.
The wildlife were beautiful--the beautiful deer and fawns snacking on plants around the property (but never our food!).
Everything about the scene is peaceful, relaxing, healing, and romantic. The water is so delicious and pure so we took some home as a souvenir.
The house provides a beautifully artistic backdrop and we even saw a rainbow over it, and the stars at night.
We stayed in late-August, when mosquitos are notorious in this part of the country, but they weren't a major nuisance here at all. We brought a Thermacell and it kept them away just fine--I would recommend bringing one as well.
I HIGHLY recommend staying here and experiencing it for yourself. We're already looking on our calendars for our next chance to come up for another visit!

A beautiful place to wake up to! We arrived at night and were greeted by Fledge who barked but was super sweet. It’s a flat field, parking was simple in the dark. The train wasn’t overwhelmingly loud but I used earplugs anyway because I’m a light sleeper. We would have stayed longer if we had the time.

Camping on Alan’s land was an absolute pleasure. I also had the honor of meeting Alan and his wife of 50 years Joan. Could not find a better host. I will be back, soon, Lord willing.
