Located in northern Connecticut, right up there by Massachusetts, Tunxis State Forest is wild and remote. The trees here are some of the oldest around, since it was already wooded when it became owned by the state in 1923. Most other forests were only just growing into what they are now from abandoned farms.
You never know what you might see in Tunxis State Forest, although we can give you some ideas. If you go for a hike through these old trees, you might spy a moose munching on foliage, or a black bear bumbling about. If that hike happens to be the Falls Brook trail, then you will certainly see a beautiful waterfall.

With 9,000 acres of wooded hills and an 18-acre pond, the whole population of Hartford could get lost here.
If getting lost is indeed what you’d like to do, you can do so by land or water. Getting lost by canoe on the pond is highly recommended, although getting lost in the forest is equally pleasurable. However, we should clarify that we are referring to “getting lost” metaphorically. It is not actually a good idea to physically lose your sense of direction here. Tree huggers unite! This is the promised land. Consisting of two separate forests, the wooded bastions of Mother Nature rise tall and strong in these parts. Each tree is beautiful in its own way, but perhaps no trunk is better for squeezing than those in the 200-year old white pine grove in the Whittemore Recreation Area of the Peoples Forest.
One can only hug so many trees, however, so it’s a good thing there are lots of other things to do in the American Legion and Peoples State Forests. The trails that wind through these wooded acres will keep hikers on their feet for days on end. And the waters of the wild and scenic West Branch of the Farmington River attracts kayakers and fishers from all over Connecticut and even neighboring states. But if you want to just come and squeeze an oak, no one will fault you.

We are a quintessential family farm and homestead — our farmhouse dates to the 1840s. Bill and I bought this 13-acre property in 2012, overgrown with wild roses. The animals did the clearing: goats ate the roses, pigs dug up the roots, chickens raked it clean. Win win!
A Touch of Hardwick History
In 1686, Captain Samuel Ruggles and seven men purchased this land from the Nipmuck people for twenty British pounds. His grandson, Brigadier General Timothy Ruggles, became a notorious Loyalist — driven from Hardwick at dawn by his own brother Benjamin, who warned him: “Cross today and you will never cross again alive.” His daughter Bathsheba became the first woman executed in the newly independent United States, for murdering her husband — told in Murdered by His Wife by Deborah Navas.

Our 2 acre property and house is located in the center of the small town of Leverett. We have two sites, a private camping spot located down by the stream, and a yurt at the edge of the yard. We are near a paved road with moderate traffic.
The property abuts many acres of woods and there are a number of great walking trails nearby. A half-mile walk behind the house takes you through the forest to an outlook on Leverett Pond.
The Peace Pagoda is just a few miles up the road. Other nearby destinations include Cushman Market and Cafe, the Montague Bookmill, and Mt. Toby waterfall, caves, and lookout tower.
Leverett Pond has a public boat launch nearby. We have canoes, paddles, and lifejackets available for rent--inquire for details!

We loved our stay! The area and the whole farm is amazing. Really cozy and private. The watering hole was such a great little gem! Spent hours.
And more beautiful than the land itself were the people. We had a bit of car issues and David went over and above to make sure we were safe and set. The true meaning of , salt of the earth . Definitely going back.

Had an amazing stay on the property. John provided directions and had the fire wood ordered waiting on arrival. Arrived on 95+ degree day and setup the tent by the pond. BBQ’d and setup a projector by the shed. At sundown could hear the yotes in the distance which was awesome. Watched a storm/lightning make its way from the Northwest for over 30 minutes but underestimated how bad it was going to be. The storm hit with a fury with high winds and rain lasting about 30 minutes. Had a 10x10 canopy casualty damaged from the storm. Was expecting the tent by the pond to have been obliterated but when we made our trek back after the storm subsided it was standing completely intact. Spent the rest of the night by the fire and in the morning enjoyed a cool breeze that came through that helped dry stuff out before packing up and heading out. Highly recommend and would stay again.

What an incredible getaway this was. Such a beautiful property to unwind and take in nature. We loved the animals. Baby goats make everything better.
The camper was cozy and had everything we needed. The hosts, Molly and Diego were so kind and accommodating.

Our stay at this Hipcamp site in Massachusetts was absolutely wonderful. Upon arrival, the address and mailbox were clearly marked, making the property easy to find. The entrance driveway is a little bumpy, but completely manageable for a travel trailer.As you drive in, you're welcomed by a large open field filled with beautiful flowers, with thick brush lining one side, creating a peaceful and private atmosphere. The road gently curves around to the campsite, where you'll find a picnic table, a fire pit, and clean, seasoned firewood ready for burning.The property is exceptionally well-maintained, clean, and very private. Occasionally, you can hear cars passing in the distance, but only because the beautiful breeze carries the sound. Rather than being disruptive, it simply reminds you that you're tucked away in your own peaceful retreat.Our dogs wore their Halo GPS collars during our stay, and they worked perfectly. Despite how secluded and private the campsite feels, we also felt completely safe and comfortable throughout our visit.One of the most surprising aspects of this location is it's convenience. You're just minutes from shopping and amenities, including Walmart, Dollar Tree, Dollar General, Dunkin', and Starbucks, yet once you're back at the campsite, you would never know they were nearby.The fresh breeze and the unforgettable scent of the flowers made our stay even more special.

First off, this place is magical. Gorgeous blueberry farm that at dawn is a symphony of birds and dusk is covered with fireflies. We camped up by the sugar shack only because of threatening rain. We ended up exploring the near by river and Glendale Falls. If you are looking for peaceful offline experience I would highly recommend camping here.
