This is a semi-secluded, quiet property, off the main road by a mile and tucked in the woods at the end of a dead-end road. This property gives visitors access to 100 plus acres of woods, which includes a brook, swale, and some fields, including a wild strawberry blueberry field. The Wakefield Wildlife Sanctuary was generously bequeathed to the Kennebec Land Trust in November 2016 upon owner Kendra Wakefield Shaw’s passing. Its 108-acres feature historic cabins and 4000 feet of frontage on Cobbossee Stream in West Gardiner. The property’s coniferous and deciduous woods, vernal pools, and marshlands are important habitat for many species of birds, mammals, and plants.
In 2018, the Maine Cabin Masters renovated two of the stream-side cabins, which now serve as rustic getaways for Hipcampers and the like.
A small dock and canoes are available for use on the wide and deep flatwater stream!
*NEW 2024 - A dock has been added to cabin 2, so each cabin now has it's own private dock.

Our farm cabin has a great feel of being connected to nature. It is quiet, cozy and a wonderful place to watch the sunset overlooking grazing animals. The cabin has a queen bed in the downstair bedroom and another double bed in the loft. The couch in the sitting room also folds-out to a double bed for the children. We use high-quality cotton sheets, pillows and down comforters - to assure you will be cozy and feel pampered.
We provide coffee/tea service in the morning in our farm store.
The cabin does not have heat, electricity or running water. We provide numerous battery-charged lights and candles making this a is cozy, relaxing and perfect way to experience Maine farm life. An outhouse is nearby. We provide an outdoor hot-water shower.
Plan to visit our farm store where you can buy home-made soap, beeswax candles, organic wool pillows, sheep and goat skins and other creations made by Patti.
Loads of hiking trails are right out our door or wander down the gravel road.
Visiting the animals (sheep, pigs and, of course, Denali - the farm hound) is always a highlight for guests. Please leave your own dog at home, thank you.

FAQ: Our cabin is an off grid (very limited power, now way to charge or plug in AC devices) post and beam structure that we built 9 years ago. It has a full kitchen, wood stove, and screened porch. There is a large (150 gallon) tank of water for doing dishes and camp showers but we do not suggest drinking it. There is a generous supply of lanterns (both battery and inflatable solar) flashlights and string lights for lighting. We have wired lights that run off DC power when there is enough solar and we provide some battery packs for charging phones. We highly suggest bring some way to charge any of your personal electronics. There is no reliable way to do that in the cabin.
This is a small two story timber frame cabin off grid and secluded deep in the woods. It has a separate outhouse as well as shower stall to use the solar shower bags in. The cabin has a king sized bed in the loft with a child size fold down bunk above it; there is also a pull out couch on the first floor. As well as a kitchen, screened in porch and fire pit. Linen, dishes and utensils are not included please bring all that you need. There is a propane 4 burner stove with oven and solar shower bags. Trash and campfire wood is included. We are very busy with kids and work, we try our best to clean and re-supply between guests but it is not always possible, please let us know if something needs attention!

A private wooded lot on a road with farms and woodland. Some road noise from Middlesex road during commuting times that quiets down for sleeping. Topsham is lovely and I'm grateful to live here and share this space with travelers!

Please consider that we might be on the lower property during the middle of the day: 11am-4pm, which matches most of our visitors needs as they are using the property as an evening and morning stopover.
Fires are not allowed when the fire danger is High through Extreme. We will talk about fire safety if the danger level is Moderate. Thanks for being safe!
Things to do in area:
Midcoast Maine has an endless bounty of treasures for visitors in all seasons. Hiking, biking, boating, history, art, swimming, food, and cultural events with beautiful nature surrounding it all. Closest to site: The Tarbox Preserve, a Brunswick-Topsham Land Trust property with hiking and skiing, is 2 lots up the road. The lovely Head of Tide park with a small waterfall is 2.2 miles to the west.
Grocery: Our towns (Topsham and Brunswick) have several grocery stores: Hannaford, Shaw's, Market Basket, and a wonderful natural foods store. We have many farm stands with organic and locally grown produce closely nearby - ask us to help you locate them!
Food: Brunswick is restaurant and brewery heaven! Amazing beers, wood fired pizza, sushi, Thai, Vietnamese, Greek, German, Filipino, deli, Fusion and more!
Harpswell Heritage Land Trust trails are dog-friendly and on the beautiful Maine coast.

Get your "groove" on or hang loose here on a precious little island with a big bridge just off route one in the heart of Midcoast. It is a lovely spot just off the beaten path but close enough to access the frey. :)
I welcome my guests personally and have likely had a chat before you booked. I like to know what your hopes and priorities are around your stay before I accept so I can meet both of our needs. When you arrive, I will greet you and share a little history/tour of the place. I accept travelers between 4 and 9 pm but like all of us schedules fluctuate and we can roll some. There's a strong chance on an average Maine clear summer evening, I have the campfire going and the solar lights around the yard are charged for their evening gentle show.
All of the spaces I rent are bedrooms only. You walk a few steps/yards to my 5 bedroom home and access two showers and some kitchen use. I also have an outdoor shower and outdoor kitchen that is cute and for your use. It's fun to cook on the fire too! I prefer folks to limit cooking esp in hot weather but support healthier eating and may share some of my foraging tips. The rooms are equipped with plenty of linens and fan power. You will be cozy either way the temps go.
There is a lovely porch on the log home where you can sit and enjoy the sunset and lots of wildlife activity. The back yard has tether ball and lots of seating as well as the good sized fire pit with ghosts of hundreds of fireside chats gone by. I look forward to ours!
Next door there is a gravel road on a lightly traveled road for your walking or biking pleasure. I am happy to join you in a hilly roller coaster cycling experience and have a few bikes to offer up. I am a WWOOF host and have occasional "helpers" and you are welcome to explore my veggie and flower gardens.
This host loves board games and crafts so is often ready to share either or both with guests. There are 150 acres around me that are wooded and pathed so your pup will love it too. Reach out soon and let's chat about your vacation and visit here. I look forward to hearing from you.

My step Dad Bob ‘discovered’ the island in the 1970’s when he was escaping the rat race and looking to get ‘back to the land’. Over the course of three years he built the island house by floating cedar logs across the bay, using a come-along to bring the up to the land, debarked and prepped them for building and set about constructing his off-grid, solar powered home. All without power tools.
Both my Mom and Bob were ardent environmentalists and peace advocates. For 20 years they lived year-round on the island and only left when their ages made it difficult to continue cutting/splitting/moving/burning wood and just the ordeal of living so remotely. Wherever we go people either say "I love Maine!" or "I've always wanted to go to Maine!" This naturally wooded lot with a platform for your tent or table, is a perfect place to camp or park your RV and enjoy the beauty of Mid-Coast Maine. (Look for the lobster bouy on the tree and the lobster trap on the ground as you circle the street turn around.) It is located in the middle of the Pemaquid Peninsula, home to Maine's most famous lighthouse: it’s on the U.S. quarter. This is a great spot from which to explore beaches (8 miles), canoeing and kayaking (2 miles), state and national parks, and hiking trails (8 miles). There are great restaurants, shops, summer theater, art studios and antique markets in nearby Damariscotta and all along the Maine coast. We built this cabin recently with siblings and a few skilled friends to make a getaway place for the extended family. Just 2 miles off Rte. One our location is quiet and perfect for exploring the midcoast of Maine - a short drive to many favorite places!
The cabin is built on property adjacent to our fruit farm which is slowly building up to full production with a kiwi orchard planted, ramps seeded, and a producing strawberry hoophouse for early ripening fruit. We move our horse and pony around to different fields during the warmer months, and keep pekin ducks (the white ones) (now all in retirement!). The farm is 78+ acres with logging roads and is located on a quiet road. Food markets and some good places to eat are within 6-7 miles. There is an outdoor shower, a nice outhouse, a campstove, oil lamps etc - so it's is very old fashion yet comfortable cabin stay! Bring your own towels and maybe some candles. Plenty of board games, and maps of our local hikes and places to explore. If you come in the fall you should know that the roof is insulated but the walls are not - so layer up, bring extra blankets, and hugging the woodstove might be necessary! You'll enjoy the screened porch in all kinds of weather.

We had a wonderful stay on Hockomock Island. Lisa’s cabin is a true gem. The cabin has so much soul and history. The location itself was an excellent escape into nature with total isolation on the island. Our dog was thrilled to have trail access to a whole island. Woolwich was a great base location for our day trips to Freeport and exploring beaches in the area. We would certainly stay again.

What a blessing to have stayed here. We loved meeting John and learning about the land. The campsite was perfect for our suv tent. Outhouse was clean and close to site. We loved taking the canoe out and lost count of the amount of fish we caught. We loved listening to the wildlife and watching the loons. We are forever grateful to have stayed here and thank John for his generosity and hospitality and to him and his family for sharing such a beautiful piece of paradise with us. It was a truly magical experience we will not soon forget. Can’t wait to go back!

Weekend Trip to Wakefield Wildlife Sanctuary
We loved our stay at Kennebec Land Trust. The porch was a dream - we spent many hours rocking on the chairs and gazing out over the water. I appreciated the inclusion of pots and pans, dish soap, utensils, etc. We cooked both on the stove and over the fire. The bugs were much less bad than I anticipated. Despite going in "peak" black fly season, we saw none. Only a few mosquitoes that some bug spray kept at bay. Overall it's a stunning cabin. I'd love to come back!

Weekend Trip to Wakefield Wildlife Sanctuary
One of the best cabin camping experiences in Maine. This was our second time staying in the cabins. We’re very grateful to Kennebec Land Trust for opening these up to the public. It’s a no frills cabin — screened in porch for hanging out if it’s buggy, canoe right by the dock (no additional cost), fire pit with firewood (no additional cost), gas stove, carts for shuttling your possessions from car to cabin. For bedding, we brought our own pillows and sleeping bags and were comfortable as the lows dipped into the mid 40s.
Nearby: Gardiner is a great town. Table Bar is a cool spot. You’re also less than 15 minutes to Absolem Cider Co where we met up with friends. Good for kids to roam around amongst chickens + food trucks if you weren’t in the mood for camp cooking.

We really enjoyed our time at the Joe and Doe Cabin. While the surrounding late spring forest was packed with hungry mosquitoes, the top of the hill where this picturesque cabin was perched had noticeably fewer bugs. The wood stove provided a great heat source to fend off the nightly chill. My partner and I were toasty warm in our spot in the loft right above the stove. Birdwatching was effortless from the large porch and picnic table. Hauling our wagon full of gear on the trails was a bite-sized challenge that made the stay feel a bit more special. I can’t wait to return and see how this little corner of the earth changes with the seasons.

This was our second time staying at Waters Edge, and we continue to be impressed by the site. The bunkhouse is both spacious and cozy, with spectacular morning views of the water.
The hosts have truly thought of everything you might need - from a first aid kit, cribbage board, and hand sanitizer to kindling and even additional tent space. We always joke that we could show up with just clothes and food and be completely set for the weekend with everything provided.
Our favorite amenity is the kayaks, we really appreciate not having to pack our own. This is a trip I look forward to every year, and I highly recommend it for first-time campers, experienced outdoors enthusiasts, and everyone in between

Hockomock island is a very special place. Lisa is a really great host and nice to talk to. Our time was so quiet and peaceful. Kayaking around in the bay was dreamy. Exploring the island was fun. And waking up every day to that view, priceless.

We stayed at site #3 for a few nights and had such a great experience. The property is absolutely stunning and feels incredibly immersive if you’re looking to truly disconnect and spend time in nature. Everything was very well maintained and thoughtfully cared for.
John was also a wonderful host and made the experience feel very personal. He stopped by during our stay to introduce himself and was kind enough to share stories about the land and the area, which made it feel even more special. Would definitely recommend staying here if you’re looking for a unique and peaceful escape.

I had a wonderful stay on John’s property. The site was high above the banks of The Mighty Androscoggin River. We drove across a huge field to get to there, it had a lovely fire pit and a well placed porta potty. There were some great trails and excellent bird watching. What impressed me most was John’s foresight in acquiring the land, parcel by parcel to preserve the open space and natural landscape. It’s very precious I’ll be back.
