A beautiful island campground thickly forested with spruce, fir, and birch, Four Acre Woods was created over 60 years ago on Sunshine Island, Maine. Under the name Sunshine Campground, it hosted people from all over the world and delivered the spirit and essence of this ancient, abundant land that so many ancestors had roamed and celebrated before. It was open to the public through to the 90s, but then sat alone for 15 years, waiting for someone to revive it and bring it back to the world. Then one day, Caleb and Wolf met on a bus, heading south from Down East Maine, where they instantly connected and joined forces. They worked together redressing a home in Stonington for visitors to experience and became brothers while doing so. Eventually, the presence and opportunity of the campground caught their attention and after working out the technicalities, they worked together to bring this beautiful land and campground back to the people under its new life and name, Four Acre Woods. Home to black bear, local mammals , and our favorite, wolves. Most of the staff live here full time all year. The sounds of the night are magical. Unleash your imagination and camp here away from the crowds you may find within the local Acadia National Park area which begins about 5 minutes away at Thompson’s Island and the bridge to Mt Desert Island. We are close to basic necessities, and a step away from the masses. We do educational tours daily and if interested these tours are arranged by reservation too. We may allow camping in Winter months but if it is between November and May it is very important to call and find out the accessibility as weather impacts everything. The shower will likely be unavailable in freezing months and some sites are closed. CALL and speak with a staff member before reserving. Self contained Adventure Vans and tent campers with Winter Gear and Rooftop Tents can be accommodated. Or If you want to have a solid roof , screens and a fabulous view ask about reserving our Cadillac Mountain View Loft or if the idea of being naked under the stars is appealing opt for our Raw and Rough site.! Pulling in late, and leaving early for a typical Sunrise reservation.? We can also accommodate that if we know that is all you want. Traveling with your horse.? Talk to us about an Equine site. The Biker’s Bunkhouse is ideal for motorcycle travelers as it shelters both the guest and the Bike/s. When we first purchased our property, we were made aware of a young fella needing a spot to set up his yurt. He lived with us for two years before moving along. We had enjoyed having him and his yurt on our land so when he left, It left a virtual and metaphorical hole. A couple years later we had an opportunity to purchase a yurt from an outdoor adventure company and so it began. We improved upon our tenant's idea by adding a proper outhouse and outdoor shower area. The space offered us a quiet haven during hectic times and now we are ready to share that opportunity. Our yurt sits on a quiet and private nook on our 7 acre property. We are right in between Kennebunk and Biddeford so there are quite a number of areas to explore if you make us your home base. It is a lovely 6 mile ride to Goose Rocks Beach or you can spend an afternoon walking around Dock's Square in Kennebunkport. Biddeford is a rapidly rebuilding mill town that has made several high profile food and travel publications for its great dining spots. If you are visiting to get away from the city, we are less than a mile away from the Eastern Trail which connects South Portland to Kittery, ME. Bring a bike or plan a quiet walk. Bill Irwin, his family, and his dog “Orient” owned the property and stayed in the “camp house” located below while building the main house. Bill was legally blind and Orient was his guide dog. Bill and orient hiked the Appalachian trail and received awards as well as a book written called "Blind Courage.” Bill passed away before he could finish the home. We felt it would be nice to fix up the house below and make it a tribute to Bill and Orient being we had been left quite a few artifacts of theirs. Unfortunately after looking into fixing it up, it was suggested to tear it down. Then we made the decision to clean up the land for campers. We hope people can come enjoy the peacefulness that we have so much enjoyed for the past 3 years. I support your relaxing beverage or two at the fire or around the property but this definitely not a party place. We will consider your pet with $35 fee and a conversation ahead of time. We have a jack russell and black cat so have to protect their interests and those of other pets and guests coming as well. Your pup must be on leash at all times unless/until we decide they are safe, others are comfortable and that it works for all to have them run free at times. Thanks! My husband and I bought this property in January of 2020. The main house was just a shell but, we had a vision for it. We were so excited about the history of the home and land. Bill Irwin, his family, and his dog “Orient” owned the property and stayed in the “camp house” located below while building the main house. Bill was legally blind and Orient was his guide dog. Bill and orient hiked the Appalachian trail and received awards as well as a book written called "Blind Courage.” Bill passed away before he could finish the home. We felt it would be nice to fix up the house below and make it a tribute to Bill and Orient being we had been left quite a few artifacts of theirs. Unfortunately after looking into fixing it up, it was suggested to tear it down. Then we made the decision to clean up the land for campers. We hope people can come enjoy the peacefulness that we have so much enjoyed for the past 3 years. We have fiber wifi access throughout the property and a full community kitchen, shower room, and sitting area that is close to all of our cabins and tent sites.
