Our land is out away from all the noise and lights. You can see the milky way and the stars at night are amazing. then to have the view of the Sangre de Christo mountain range is amazing to enjoy. Your site is overlooking the Sangre de Christo mountain range. The land is Alpine desert with sagebrush and ground cactus and incredible star gazing. There are 2 great hiking trails within a couple miles. There are 3 hot springs within 30 minutes. The Great sand dunes national park is within 1hr. The San Luis valley offers, hiking, mountain biking, ATV trail, Horse back riding, kayaking, stand up paddle boarding, rafting, refuges for wildlife watching.
New for 2024, The flushable toilet and shower are now operational. The shower house is located in the center of the loop with sites 1,2,3 on the south side of the building. It has an on demand water heater, there is also a a flushable toilet located in the same space. An important note about the toilet, Do Not flush anything other than toilet paper please. DO NOT flush feminine hygiene products, napkins or hand wipes or anything other than toilet paper. These type of things plug and burn up the pump while pumping out the tank. This will cause the toilet to be unusable.

We also have begun hosting our first artist/maker residents who are using the shop space and land to bring their own creations to life. Over time, we have dreams of permaculture farming, eco building workshops, community collaboration, and the ability to host gatherings – however, we are committed to taking it all one step at a time and allowing only what is meant to be to unfold. For now it is simply our home, a maker space for art and experimental eco building, a gathering spot for friends and a quiet Hipcamp spot.

Tin Can Camp is located within 200 acres of Colorado State Trust Land at roughly 8,000 feet above sea level. The landscape is arid high desert with scattered groves of piñon and juniper trees. The camp serves as a convenient home base for launching adventures across the San Luis Valley to various local Hot Springs, archeological sites, and other small town local attractions. For the more adventurous guests, there is recreation right from Tin Can Camp with The Valleys largest trail system and climbing area less than a mile away and access to the vast expanse of the Rio Grande National Forest.
The cabins are "micro homes" outfitted with modern conveniences. Each cabin has solar power, a propane heater, a compact kitchen with a sink, water jugs, and pump, two full size loft beds, a small table with chairs, and a covered porch. Guests should know there is no water available on the property. You will need to bring water for all your needs. This includes cooking, washing, drinking, and for putting out fires. Tin Can Camp is adjacent to the future Sangre de Cristo Dark Sky Reserve, and the property has spectacular views of the Milky Way Galaxy. Each cabin has a fire ring for guests to relax and enjoy the dark nighttime sky. Wood collecting on the property is not permitted, so guests must bring their own firewood.
As mentioned, the property is located at the entrance to Penitente Canyon. Penitente Canyon is a Nationally-renowned climbing destination with more than 400 climbing routes. Penitente Canyon also has 30+ miles of non-motorized trails for mountain biking, hiking, and equestrian activities and guest have direct trail access from camp!
Guests can ride mountain bikes directly from the property. There are numerous recreation, sightseeing, historical and cultural, and agricultural tourism opportunities in the nearby Rio Grande National Forest, Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve, and Sangre de Cristo National Heritage Area.
Gas, ice, water, and some groceries can be found nearby at the La Garita Trading Post, which has operated since 1913. The La Garita Trading Post is in a historic log cabin and serves the best local-beef burgers in the San Luis Valley.

We have 30/50amp sites (shade and partial shade) around our lake, 20 amp in the "upper campground," and dry camping (full facilities) on the Arkansas River with Gold Medal fishing with access for all campers for fishing and floating. Adventure awaits with home to the highest mountain peaks in Colorado and the river and 102 miles of Trout Gold Medal Water. There is access to white water rafting, guided fishing, and fishing lessons. There are at least 5 hot springs within 60 miles of Twin Bridges Campground. Salida is considered the white-water rafting capitol of the US by some and has a whitewater park and surfing wave. Salida area is also home to a ton of hiking (14'ers anyone?) and mountain biking trails. The Royal Gorge is a quick 30 minute drive with restaurants and other fun near Canon City. The Sand Dunes are 90 minutes and Monarch Ski Area is 45, we have some of the best bird watching! Warbling Vireo, Western Wood-peewee, Cassin's Kingbird to name a few.

Camping here at the Rabbit Hole Ranch is primitive and dispersed (no numbered sites) and there 30 acres available for you to use. Just follow the signs to the designated area and pick out a spot you like.
Some spots have fire rings, some don’t. We are working on getting more, but in the meantime you’re welcome to bring your own. Or feel free to dig out a little hole. It works great and is easy to extinguish when you fill it back in and bury it. Please do not bury any trash.
Typically, you will experience a rare kind of solitude and silence that feels…. other-worldly, with incredible sunrises and sunsets filling the enormous skies.
On holidays, however, expect it to be busy.
Our only dog, Boudicca, is a working dog and she is more than happy to help keep you and your pets safe. Please help make her job easier by not leaving any food or trash in or around tents. Her name is Boudicca (BOO duh kuh) and she lost her two besties last year, so she needs extra love and treats!
Please keep your pets on leash or under control until you’re comfortably certain they get along with our dog. And please report any issues promptly.
Quiet time begins at 10:00 pm.
Note: Holidays still offer the excellent location and spectacular views, but are likely to be less quiet and far more busy. We typically do not strictly enforce quiet time during holidays.

Base Camp Family Campground is owned and operated by the Baker Family. Josh Baker first lived in Southern Colorado in the early 90's as a child, but his family moved away after a short time. His desire to move back here as an adult prompted him to start bringing his own family to Colorado for vacations. They purchased land in the valley in 2014 and moved to Colorado in 2020. Our RV Park in South Fork CO has space for 18 R.V.’s. Each site has full hookups with the majority being 50amp service and are oversized so that they can handle any big rig! There is a shower house and laundry facility available for our guests (seasonal). There is more than ample parking and each site is easy to access.

Great Sand Dunes National Park is open all year long and is a day trip from South Fork. Enjoy the Sand Dunes National Park, learn how they were formed, hike a dune and try sand boarding. Zapata Falls is a short hike near the Sand Dunes.

The Tiny house has 360 degrees of vistas, near many local attractions including Mtn Home Reservoir, Stations of the Cross, Great Sand Dunes, Zapata Falls [ if you have time this is a gem to see], Colorado Gators, Ft Garland Museum, Mtn Blanca, 75 miles to Taos NM, and many wildlife reserves. The Tiny House is APX 150ft from main home but has its own drive and private parking, amenities include WIFI, bathroom and shower, towels and bedding, kitchenette, with fridge, microwave, toaster oven, coffee maker [ coffee provided], and television. Sleeps 2 very cozy. We are Pet friendly [ WITH $20.00 CASH CHARGE PER PET, UPON ARRIVAL, LIMIT 2]. Pets cannot be left on property or in Tiny house unsupervised. You are invited to stay on 185 acres surrounded by beautiful mountains in the Rio Grande National Forest. Escape the crowds and relax in the quiet mountains. Easy Alamosa River access. Close to outdoor adventures; fishing, hiking, biking, atv trail access. Come enjoy a secluded and unforgettable mountain experience!
The camp is in a wilderness setting with electricity supplied by a diesel generator that operates from 6:00 am to 10:00 pm. No cell service in the canyon but the camp does have a regular phone for special usage and satellite Wi-Fi for $10.
The most unique quality is the beauty and cleanliness of the forest. The quiet peaceful atmosphere of the canyon is hard to believe. This is the perfect place for families to unplug, get outside but still have some of the comforts we all enjoy!

Super clean and comfortable cabins on a beautiful peaceful property, grassy lawns, tons of aspens, a small creek running through it. Easy access to multiple Colorado Trail trailheads (<5 min drive). Fully stocked kitchen. Wi-fi wasn't blazing fast but totally sufficient for a couple days of remote work including video calls.

Beautiful spot right on the water! Definitely rustic but a great value for the price and had everything we needed. The owners were very nice! Great privacy for Pioneer Cabin 2. Kids enjoyed walking across the swinging bridge. Beautiful moonlit sky to enjoy the evenings. If you're fussy about linens or cush pillows, bring your own. We were there during a heat wave in late March and it was quite warm in the cabin. The oscillating fan was a lifesaver but it doesn't hit one corner of the beds. If it's peak summer, you may wanna throw in a second one. The coffee pot is a nice touch and fridge and microwave too! Made for a low maintenance quick getaway from the city and a short, scenic drive to Salida. Crucial that it was pet friendly as we love being able to bring our doggos. Would definitely come back. Thanks for having us!

My wife, two dogs and I stayed for three nights during an unseasonably warm mid-March, using TCC as a basecamp for sandhill crane viewing and other SLV exploits. Overall, it was great, especially for the price. The cabin was well-built and well-equipped (even better so than some pricey Airbnbs), the view was spectacular, and the great outdoors were immediately at hand. The only downside is that it is a bit remote from some of the attractions we wanted to visit, but you can't have everything. If you stay, check out the church next door.

Everything was fantastic except for the fact that there was no mention that the incinerating toilets were removed! :( Instead, there was an outhouse/porta potty situation which wasn’t too bad all things considered, I just wish communication would have been a bit more transparent given that there was plenty of time/ways to do so.

Great lil cabin with easy access to Penitente Canyon and the San Luis Valley. The cabins have all the basics for a weekend stay. We found the instructions for all the amenities and the directions to the place to be very helpful. Highly recommend to folks looking for an elevated camping experience!

The cabin had everything we needed. Location was beautiful. We were there for the Sandhills crane migration and it was an easy commute to the wildlife refuge. Everything was as advertised and we had pretty decent privacy. Cabin was perfect for a home base when our hiking or enjoying the scenery.

Weekend Trip to Starlite Vintage Resort
Very clean property. Great clean showers as well. Only downside is that the heated pool isn’t operable during their winter period and neither are the showers inside the campers. However, they were responsive via text when I had questions. I’ll come back when it’s not off season and additional amenities are available.

There are not words to describe the views from our cabin! Hosts were so kind and friendly. I was worried that the cabin would not be warm enough but the heater provided put off way more than enough heat. You’re missing out if you don’t stay here !

Loved it! As advertised, great little cabin in awesome location. Me and my 6 year old son went for the weekend. Hiked the local mountains in the day, camp fires at night. Went November 7, but still wasn’t too cold in the cabin at all.
