We view ourselves as just the current stewards of this beautiful place. This was home to the flora and fauna for hundreds of thousands of years before people, then home to the Pomo people for many generations, then a slew of immigrants and homesteaders, and now us. Our property boasts year round creeks, waterfalls, swimming holes, Madrones, Oaks, Douglas firs and manzanitas. Wild horses roam the land as well as the occasional mountain lion and black bear. Heartwood Camp’s Huckleberry site was an absolutely incredible stay. The scenery alone is worth the visit—towering redwoods, peaceful forest views, and a truly serene atmosphere that makes it easy to unplug and relax. The facilities are top-notch. The camp kitchen is well thought out and very convenient, and the bathrooms are clean, comfortable, and clearly well cared for. Everything feels intentionally designed to enhance the camping experience while still letting nature be the star. One of the highlights of the stay was the unforgettable outdoor redwood tree shower. Showering among the redwoods is magical—private, refreshing, and easily one of the coolest outdoor showers I’ve ever experienced. The hosts are wonderful, and their sweet dog Lola deserves a special mention. She’s incredibly friendly and gentle and may stop by your site to say hello, which only adds to the charm of the place. Overall, Heartwood Camp at the Huckleberry site offers a perfect balance of natural beauty and thoughtful amenities. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a peaceful, memorable camping experience. 🌲🐾🚿

Definitely recommend a 4x4 vehicle to get to the property. Have your directions downloaded before you pass the high school. Our Subaru was up for the task! The property is gorgeous and very secluded. We brought our 8 year old boy and dog. We were super lucky to have the entire camp site to ourselves the entire weekend. The temperature at night was almost freezing, so the sauna and shower made it much more tolerable. The sauna was by far the highlight of the trip for me besides being with my family unplugged! Epic stargazing at the point camp site. Having a kitchen to make a full meal for each meal was a luxury. The kitchen has everything you need to cook minus ingredients. Bring your own oil/spices etc. Also, pack out what you pack in. Meaning, there isn’t a garbage facility/ site dumpster. Also, there is really only 1 running toilet that we could find by the kitchen. I could see this being annoying in a large group setting, although having a toilet at all is a luxury when camping. If you’re a BBQ enthusiast, bring your own grill, there isn’t one to use on the property. Make sure to bring tick repellant/ check yourselves (especially dogs) regularly. We pulled a dozen off our dog and bodies. Highly recommend this spot for a weekend getaway! We loved it and will certainly be back, as a couple, as a family and with friends for sure!!

Weekend Trip to Heartwood Mendocino

We had a great time car camping with our dog at Heartwood this weekend. Beautiful site, with many handy amenities. The heated bathrooms were a lifesaver this chilly weekend, but we still took advantage of the redwood shower! It was great to chat with other campers and easy to drive out to explore beaches and hikes during the day, and run to Harvest Market if we needed anything. We will definitely come back again to camp or stay in a cabin.

Our recent stay at Shay and Liz’s Hipcamp in Mendocino County was, without question, the best Hipcamp experience we’ve ever had. From the moment we arrived, it was clear that they had thought of absolutely everything to make guests feel welcome, comfortable, and at home. Their warmth and hospitality set the tone, and the environment they’ve created is nothing short of magical, with unique artwork, beautiful plants, and thoughtful touches everywhere. Each site has its own outdoor kitchen, spacious tent pad, fire pit with chairs, blankets, and even firewood. Highlights included a hot shower among the redwoods, a trail from camp to a waterfall, and easy access to amazing beaches. The camp and nearby beaches were wonderfully dog‑friendly, and our son loved it so much he wrote a two‑page review in their guest book. We’ve already booked our return! Thanks again Shay and Liz!!

A beautiful place to come in the fall. Weather was warm during the day the forest hikes and waterfall were beautiful. Having a bath house with a sauna was a real treat. Be prepared for the long dirt road up to the property. Lots of potholes, steep hills, and turns, you need daylight and patience.

1 night at Huckleberry Hideaway•Redwood Ridge

We decided to book the Huckleberry House last minute on our way to visit family in Mendocino. The host's were attentive and prompt if we needed any info, and the property itself is beautiful. Huckleberry House is basically a new, one bedroom, off-grid tiny home. Uber glamping! With running water, hot water on-demand, and solar power. The driveway was a little hard to find, but once we were there, everything was clearly labeled and easy to navigate. It was super cold that night, but the propane heater kept us toasty throughout the night. Huck House is outfitted with a stocked kitchenette, so making coffee and a simple breakfast the next day was easy and convenient. Word to the wise: don't run hot water in the kitchen if someone is in the shower! ;) The host offered to take us to some local hiking spots and attractions but we didn't have the time. We will definitely stay there again and hopefully take them up on helping us explore the area. Would absolutely recommend!

Weekend Trip to Comptche Matrix @ Sunny-land

Sunny’s disposition, dogs, and property were the perfect refreshing getaway. You can’t get what you’re getting here from anywhere else, i will be back soon! There were a lot of things, also, that I didn’t realize she provided, like blankets and cooking utensils, even wood, for the stove inside the cabin. It’s still for the best to bring your own stuff in case you like to have specific stuff, and just to lessen the load on the host because she offers the space for such a good deal, but if you forget anything she was very generous and kind. She even used her leaf blower on the fire I was struggling to start in the fire pit near the cabin. The pit toilet was clean and not too hard to get to, with a very nice view, and there is a very good park for hiking 20 minutes away, a store 20 minutes in the opposite direction, and you can get to Mendocino or the Pygmy forest with another 20 minutes or so of driving. This would be a good place to stay if you want to visit the hot spring, too, as their camping is closed after November and their hotel is a little pricey. Safe, chill, and neat.

Weekend Trip to Waterfall Camp

This was the perfect place to call home base while exploring everything Mendocino has to offer. The place was easy to find and I was greeted warmly by Shay who was super helpful throughout my stay. I stayed at site 1 which was clean and exactly as advertised. The sites are a little close together but separated by trees so there is still privacy. The outdoor flushing toilets, hot showers, and running water at each site made the stay comfortable and the WiFi allowed me to plan for the next day’s activities with ease. The hike to the waterfall was stunning and so easy to access. The stars from the site were unbeatable. There were cooking utensils and firewood, a picnic table with umbrella, outdoor string lights, and so many things that made the stay a little more like home. I feel like I’ve looked, online, at nearly every HipCamp and campground in Northern California and this is truly one of the best! I can’t recommend staying here enough.
