The trip to the site will begin with a three mile drive on a private dirt road.  Being on the very top of a mountain brings more seasonality than the surrounding cities.   Please be prepared for any kind of extreme weather. Summer: Shade is highly recommended it can get into triple digits. *Spring/fall: Temperatures are generally mild but high winds are possible. *Winter: Typically cold and windy. *During rainy/muddy conditions 4x4/AWD is highly recommended.  It is possible for it to get windy, foggy, rainy, hot and sunny, and even sometimes snowy. Please note: the nearest grocer is 30 minutes from this site. Emergency supplies are available for delivery to your campsite. We run a nonprofit outdoor education camp for underprivileged youth, so your stay supports our work to get youth outdoors. Winter lodging.... It can get seasonably cold in the Santa Cruz Mountains during the winter. If visiting in the winter, rest assured we have everything covered to enjoy your stay. We have propane heaters in all main spaces for your comfort. If the power goes out, we have a standby generator that will power up camp provided we are home to turn it on. We have a woodstoves in the Owl's Nest and Eagle's Nest. This is great option for those who like to bring all their own gear to camp, and don’t need or want all the extras. Our new Primitive Adventures campsites are located on an established 5-star property. It’s a peaceful, secluded and private country estate. The 20 acre property starts out flat and then gentle to moderate sloped hillside with coastal live oak trees, eucalyptus trees, pine trees, meadows and many interesting landscape features nestled between the vast farmlands of North Monterey and Santa Cruz Counties. We are 15 miles from the Pacific Ocean. The weather is usually mild here and we have cool evenings. We do get days that are in the 90s sometimes in the summer and early fall, but we also have lots of shade with all the trees. There is wildlife like deer, turkeys and owls and so much more. We have horses and a donkey, separate from the campsites, so no flies or smell from them. We provide one hot water shower and there are 3 outhouse style toilets on the grounds. There is NO running water at the sites so we suggest you bring your own drinking water. There will be limited water provided for hand/dish washing. We are a pack it in/pack it out campground so please, be mindful of waste as we ask that you take it out with you. You may forage for plentiful eucalyptus and oak firewood for free, or pre-cut pine is available for purchase. Most of our weekends are fully booked at our Rustic Campsites already, so here is another chance to have yourself a weekend camping trip at our new Primitive Adventures campsites. This is a neat little spot where you're perched above the clouds with the surrounding bay area and hills below. Despite living in the area most of my life, I've never made it up this high in the santa cruz mountains. The spot feels remote with plenty of privacy, though definitely needs a solid vehicle to tackle the last few miles of dirt road.

It’s a really simple spot with everything you need. The pond is absolutely beautiful and everything was so nice and green. All the farm animals are so fun but also loud if that isn’t something you are used to. Allen was really kind and welcoming.

2 nights at Walden Ranch

We all loved staying here and we would come back again (hopefully when it’s not raining). Alan was super friendly and the site, bathroom, water, canoes, hay rides, etc were all perfect. We did see another review to pack earplugs because it can be loud at night (the geese lol) so we all slept great. I would definitely recommend people think about what dogs they bring since there are many loose unneutered male dogs that are friendly and come around to the site regularly (as well as a pig!) One younger pup, (a jack russel mix?), repeatedly peed on our things but I think he’s still learning from the other pups how to behave. Overall we had lots of fun and definitely recommend this place.

My second visit here in this quiet oasis. Just 3 weeks between and I loved the improvements (like a cool sink in the very lovely and clean outhouse). It was off and on deluge of rain, and was so nice to fall asleep to that sound on the tent. I would highly recommend rain boots if you know there is rain in the forecast as it can get muddy between the tent and the outhouse. Simply part of the adventure... Thank you, Shelly, for the handwritten note and your always quick responses...

Weekend Trip to Walden Ranch

We loved the experience on Alan’s huge farm, and my kids had a great time with the dogs. At night, the sounds of all kinds of animals create a natural symphony. My girls were a little scared of the dogs at first, but they ended up having great fun with them. You may need to lower your expectations regarding the facilities, bathrooms, and dining area, but it’s well worth it to enjoy the nature and animals. Alan is a great host. He is in his 80s, in very good shape, and reminds us of our grandpa.

Weekend Trip to Camp Cruz Glamping Retreat

Camp Cruz is a total gem! Ismael and his wife have created something really special here. The place is fully of character and charm and makes you feel at peace among nature while providing some truly awesome creature comforts (heated beds, anyone?!). The facilities were clean and well kept and as hosts they made sure we felt welcome and comfortable to relax for the weekend. Highly recommend for a couple's getaway or a group trip as there's plenty of space and a variety of activities.

We loved staying in the tree house with incredible views of the lake and nice, cosy set up for 2 people. Jeremy went above and beyond in terms of making us comfortable providing fire wood, helping us to get to the lake side for kayaking and letting us pet the cutest ever puppies that live on the farm. We ate some good food in the town of Murphys and Jeremy’s recommendations of V bistro and vino moda were both excellent. Waking up to the birds chirping and superb view of the lake, foothills clouds from the lofted bed was a real pleasure. Cannot recommend more for a nice get away!!

It’s a perfect place to get away! There’s a grocery store about 5 minutes away that we bought some sandwiches from, and we ate outside our tent on the picnic bench! It was absolutely perfect and relaxing, would recommend!

1 night at Nearby Getaway -Dogs Welcome!

Nancy was the highlight of the trip and so accommodating and helpful throughout the entire process. She made me feel so welcome and she was lovely to talk to. Despite all the beautiful land on Nancy’s property, my pups decided to go on a little four hour “adventure” by sneaking under the gate. Nancy was SO helpful with contacting neighbors to be on the lookout and even helped drive around herself! Perhaps if you have opportunistic pups who like to explore every nook and cranny for a loophole, keep them on a long line! Luckily the stinkers came back once they got bored of freedom 🫠

We're coming back here! Affordable and well worth it. The highlight was definitely the animal feeding-it was straight up magical. Like a scene out of a movie! Traditional camping with some modern luxuries like flush toilets and a dishwashing sink. The animals were charming and nature's alarm. Just a couple of heads up-the area can get quite wet and foggy. Things will get wet overnight. The farm dogs, Sparky and Little Red were cute but quite persistent with our female dog. It is an actual ranch so bring earplugs. Roosters started crowing at 10pm and continued to do so at random intervals. For all you cityfolk, it is a ranch, so watch your step. All in all, LOVE this hipcamp.

My family spent two wonderful nights here. We were warmly welcomed by Alan, Brian, Mark and the pups. Brian was especially helpful and friendly. The highlights of our trip were feeding the animals off the hay trailer, canoeing at will, freedom to explore the beautiful acreage and the tranquil ambience. We will most definitely be returning, with a trip already in the works. Highly highly recommend visiting this magical place at least once.
