1948- On January 1, 1948 a wildcatter named George Hadley, who had been oil prospecting in the valley for 10 years, made the first oil strike in the Cuyama Valley. Richfield Oil Company soon moved in and extracted nearly 300 million barrels of oil in just a few short years. To accommodate an exploding workforce in the early 1950s, the company built the town of New Cuyama, its infrastructure, public buildings, the Cuyama airstrip (L88) and all the industrial structures that are now home to Blue Sky. Richfield Oil Company, later merging with Atlantic Oil Company forming the Atlantic Richfield Oil Company (ARCO), created high-paying jobs, a safe and prosperous community, and developed schools, churches, and recreational areas for the employee-residents.1973- With dwindling production in the area and new discoveries in Alaska, Atlantic-Richfield Oil Company put the town of New Cuyama and its associated infrastructure up for sale. Word of an entire town for sale made its way to entrepreneur, Russell O’Quinn of the Foundation for Airborne Relief (FAR) and Mildred Dotson, a wealthy widow from Tulsa, Oklahoma. The two worked together to acquire the townsite and adjacent land. O’Quinn, an aviator, inventor, and test pilot, aspired to use the New Cuyama airstrip and facilities as a base for humanitarian relief and a non-profit trade school. Though not fully realized, FAR’s primary vision included utilizing converted military aircraft to airlift food and medical supplies to developing countries and global disaster areas. Dotson had loftier goals. Her plans included an 18-hole fly-in golf course, expansion of the Buckhorn Restaurant and Motel, and a 40- to 50-acre lake for amphibious landing and water sports. 1986- Another visionary, Harry Kislevitz, inventor of the popular design tool Colorforms® and founder of Future City/Villages International, sought to develop the site as a “City of Friendship,” an all-electric village of 5,000 earthen homes. The dwellings were to be designed by Nader Khalili, an Iranian-born architect who specialized in earthen structures, worked with NASA on prototypes for lunar homes and received an award from the United Nations for his work towards the development of low cost, sustainable structures for human shelter in impoverished and disaster prone environments. One 628-sq-ft Khalili prototype remains on the property today ("the Cantina"). Khalili went on to form the California Institute for Earth Art and Architecture, Cal-Earth, in Hesperia, CA.1993- Recognizing the transformative potential of clean, solar power and the attractiveness of a rural destination, entrepreneur Mike Nolan worked to develop the Solar Skypark and Big Sky Guest Ranch with Santa Barbara Architect, Barry Berkus. The Sky Park included plans for sixty-five fly-in residences on one-acre lots powered completely from clean, solar energy. The Big Sky Guest Ranch was intended to function as a clubhouse for Skypark residents complete with an equestrian center, a small subsistence farm, pool and plenty of enriching recreational activities. 2012- At the end of 2011, the Zannon Family Foundation made a long-term investment in acquiring the New Cuyama Airport property with the vision of rehabilitating the site to be a low-cost resource for programs and organizations working to advance sustainable living practices and technologies. Plans began soon after towards developing a framework and organization to develop the space and coordinate with prospective programs and institutions. In 2014 Blue Sky Sustainable Living Center ("Blue Sky Center") received 501(c)(3) not-for-profit status, endeavoring to reclaim this property for the public good. We have some nice uphill walks to view your local surroundings while sitting to enjoy a glass of wine or you morning cup of coffee/tea. We are on a well out here so at times you may get a sulphur/mineral smell to the water. Please bring your own drinking/cooking water. It is safe to shower, my hair feels so much thicker! On the ranch you will see that we have 2 donkeys, Desi (black) and Lucy (light grey). Along with our donkeys we have to friendly goats, Fiona (brown) and Sadie (white), they love carrots. but please stick to one carrot a day each, we don't want to over feed them. We also have chickens which means have farm fresh eggs. $5 for 1/2 dozen. Up on the hill you will see Connie a cow and her buddy Samuel, the bull. they love carrots but please do not go into their pasture. She'll think you're bringing food and gets very dangerously excited. Please feel free to walk the property and become one with nature while observing the local indigenous floral and fauna.

We are a small farm on a 1 acre gated property that has two RV spots and a bar shed. We have full hookups in both sites. Our town is rural but it's still close to HWY 101. We do live on the property, close enough if you need anything but far enough for privacy. We host happy hour for campers who are interested. Although the hours depend on arrival and our availability. We have a common area between the two sites that offered a nice fire pit. Our farm has 3 goats, 2 pot bellied pigs and 20 chickens that lay fresh eggs daily. We LOVE animals but we CANNOT ALLOW PETS. Also, sorry no tent camping. RV's only. We do not provide bathrooms or showers on site. Don’t have an RV? RENT OURS! We have everything you need for your family. Enjoy a weekend on the farm and glamp in our RV. We have all the amenities of home. Coming to enjoy the area? The property is just a few mins off the 101 freeway on the Central Coast. We are only 15 mins South of Pismo Beach, 30 mins south of San Luis Obispo and an hour North of Santa Barbara. The beach, wineries and shopping are all very close. Or if you are looking for a quiet retreat with some super sweet farm animals stay here and enjoy the farm. We do rent both sites out at the same time so if it’s privacy you are looking for please message us. Or If you would like to camp with friends or family we can accommodate two additional trailers. Oak Serenity RV Spot

The property is nestled in very quiet part of Atascadero among hundreds of oak trees and nature. There are 5 acres of hills of oak trees, bay leaf and redwood trees frequented by the tree squirrels, deer and birds that live all over the property. There are 2 house is occupied on the property as well. Max the cat, chickens and a sweet lab named Maverick also occupy the property. The driveway is accessible for by car, truck, camper van, (Westie, or same type of camper van); tent campers are welcome too. It's not very easily accessible for very large trailers (more than 36 ft). The neighborhood is very quiet. Water, Wifi, and power are all available. There is no cleanout for sewer. Pleasantly surprised! This is the first time that we have stayed at a Sub Outdoors Resort. A few things that we were unaware of: 1. Halloween is huge deal at this location! If you want the weekend prior to Halloween be prepared for the entire park to fill quickly but also participate in all the festivities! Which is super cool. 2. If you have pets, please consider utilizing a travel fence! They allow your pets more freedom without the constant constraint of their leash. 3. The amenities were phenomenal, minus the food selection- but we are foodies. That and the bar/restaurant hours are strange. It is possibly because we were there in a low season?? 🤷🏼‍♀️ Not sure but the bar/restaurant was only open Thursday-Sunday. I assume most people probably only stay the weekend/long weekend but for people that are there during the week Paso Robles has plenty of food/drink options. We will 100% come back for another stay!

Holiday RV Park offers so much. I was greeted by a staff member that had me follow him to my site. He assisted me in backing my RV perfectly into the site. The bathroom and showers are clean and heated. My grandchildren and my self enjoyed the pool and spa. Lots of swim toys for the kids and floats for adults. They offer outdoor sinks, which helped me with more space cleaning dishes. The office staff is so awesome, friendly and helpful.

This place is great! A dram come true! Honestl, I was doubtful of the photos I saw on their website, but they don’t capture how beautiful the facilities are here. The restrooms showers were modern, clean and many. The various buildings were in perfect space. I reserved a spot in the camping area with is flat and large, and had contacted the hostess prior to arriving because I was riding a large Harley motorcycle and wanted to check on parking options - which were paved and perfectly adequate to a bagger ladened with a weeks worth of camping gear. The hostess was also VERY helpful and stayed in personal contact (not copy paste messages) when I let her know I was coming I. Late after a 600 miles ride. She met me well after hours and treated me better than if I were stopping at a hotel! It was such a blessing after that long ride to take a hot shower in a place that was beautiful and felt very welcoming and safe (I am a woman and was traveling alone, so that’s an important feature for me!). I think that it would be amazing for future stops in the area and a possible family or class reunion in the future.

We had a comfortable stay at Camp Arroyo Grande. It's a nice walk into town, where there are many nice restaurants. We were the only people there, so it was very quiet. It does stay very light at night and the shower heads are the height for kids, but overall it's an affordable, safe stay. We saw turkeys and deer nearby.

Super friendly hosts that were kind enough to let our kids meet the adorable alpacas. Also in such a great location - only minutes to town. Would love to come back to try the airstreams!

This was the perfect little spot to set up our tent for the night on a road trip up the coast. Just far enough off the beaten path to be quiet and restful, yet still close to the amenities of town and didn't take us too far out of our way. The spot was clean and private enough, with a bathroom nearby. And it was a treat to wake to the donkeys sweet braying!

The campsite was very nice! Although I didn’t stay in the huts I loved it! We book a tent site and got there late. It was dark but we were able to set up our tent. The owner was very responsive and had really great hospitality. I can’t believe we were able to get so many accommodations. They had a fridge, coffee, laundry machine and more. Would come back again!

Tent camping on Megan’s land was a lot of fun! We were in a nice secluded portion of her land, with easy access to a bathroom, shower and laundry facilities only a short walk away from our campsite. The nearby horses added extra excitement and fun to our camping. Would stay again.

The family that runs this space is doing the whole community an incredible service, it is a community oriented space that deserves support from all. We had an incredible time, the facilities were well maintained, the staff were incredibl hospitable. Beautiful scenery, comfortable family atmosphere, relaxed vibe. My boyfriend says "Those people are keeping that county intact." We give this place a million out of ten, highly recommend.
