Stay at a winery? Yes, please!
Mostly quiet, somewhat secluded camp site with honeybees.
Camping out at a winery was a fun way to experience Paso Robles. There are several wineries within walking distance of Dark Star, so an ambitious visitor could easily get a few tasting in without worrying about driving or getting a ride. The day I arrived there was a vendor selling scrumptious pizza baked fresh in the onsite pizza oven and a cover band playing, so I planted myself with my book and enjoyed the award-winning tasting menu at Dark Star. Later, I went for a peaceful walk around the vineyard and down the quiet road while the stars came out.
All of the winery staff is friendly and helpful, especially Adrienn. Micheal checked in a couple of times to make sure I had what I needed and my stay was going well.
Two things campers should know, and Michael said heâd update the listing to include:
1. The site is close enough to the production facility at Dark Star and a neighboring winery that you will hear the compressor cycling on and off all night. You will also hear road noise from Highway 46, including big trucks. Bring earplugs if thatâs going to bother you.
2. Thereâs a honeybee hive within 75 feet or so from the Tent 2 site. Theyâre docile, cause theyâre honeybees, but accidents happen, so if youâre allergic or scared, you should have this info. I am mildly allergic and was stung and Adrienn was very helpful.
Overall, I would stay again and be better prepared.
