Weekend Trip to The Land: An Off-grid Refuge

This was a wonderful stay! The bus is a work of art and has everything you need for an off-grid weekend. Bed is super comfy. I really loved the bathhouse, water gets nice and hot. In a greenhouse it’s almost like a sauna on a mild night! The dogs/cats/horse we met were all very friendly. Pro-tip: you’ll want mosquito repellent :)

We loved car camping at Copper Creek! The hosts were super responsive and made it easy for us to find the site after dark. The camp beautiful and has everything you need and the horses frolicking in the field were an added bonus!

Weekend Trip to Genesee Camp

We loved being hosted by Kristine on her property. It was perfect for us, but it could definitely host a large group. Kris had provided water, plenty of fire wood, and very clean toilets! There were lots of stars at night and the scenery was absolutely gorgeous. We tent camped in early May, two people and two dogs. One of our dogs is very anxious to noises and unknown dogs and people, so it was very nice to let him off leash and not have to worry about other people or dogs nearby. Our dogs loved being able to explore and sniff everything (twice). The first night we walked over to the creek and experienced some biting flies or fleas of some sort on our dogs, but no bites on us people. Nothing that OFF didn’t fix, but good thing we had it. Be prepared for bugs and cold weather if traveling here in late spring. We will definitely book here again, so much fun!

Very peaceful land for campsite setup with lots of trees. Restrooms were very clean with flush toilets. We had the sweetest tasting water from their potable water faucet. The cost of the campsite was reasonable. It was raining heavily from late afternoon and we didn’t have any sort of large tarp to spend our evening outside the tent so we ended up waiting in the car for a long time. It would have been great if there was some sort of shelter or community kitchen kind of area where people can cook and spend time on the days when it’s raining. Would definitely recommend this campsite on sunny days

Weekend Trip to Sierra Sol Camp

Really beautiful area and the kitchen is lovely. The staff and Deja were all very kind and welcoming and everything was well marked. We were unfortunately a bit disappointed when we arrived to find out the sauna, shower, and bathtubs were all out of commission. The amenities were the reason we picked this property in the first place and it would have been nice to at least get a heads up. It looked like they were doing active work on those facilities so perhaps later in the season it will be up and running and lovely, but I would check before booking if that is what you were looking forward to those things like we were.

3 nights at Maple Creek Ranch

Such a great spot. For a quick get away. Things to know: plan for mosquitoes, they were abundant. The bathroom was amazing. Literally a flushing toilet in the middle of the woods lol. There was a lot of early morning activity, from the property owners going around on some sort of quad, to the fire department rolling through…not the work but definitely a lote less private than I was thinking. Also, there was a lot of tree clearing going on due to the past fire. Fair warning: the map is a big loop and the first leg of the loop is pretty mild, a gravel road, no crazy bumps. However. The outter part of the loop past site 1 that leads out to the main road is definitely not for small sedans or anything low to the ground. We also got a few hours of a mountain storm and ended up leaving abruptly on our last night because we were getting flooded out. The campsite turned into a small ocean in the matter of an hour. And thank god my Subaru outback is All Wheel Drive! The road out would have been completely impossible if not for my Subaru. And even then we were sliding all over the place. The road out was ROUGH and was all red clay dirt that turned to mush after 20 mins of rain. Without ALL/4WD we would have been stuck in seconds. So, do yourself a favor and make the whole drive through if you suspect rain and make sure you can get out. Otherwise, this was good spot about 30 mins outside Chico, Ca. Would visit again without the possibility of rain.

We had a great experience at Maple Creek Ranch. Ron was very helpful with anything questions and requests we had. The sites are spread apart and you can barely see the other. There was an issue with the outdoor shower and Ron let us use the shower at the airbnb on the property.

Weekend Trip to Mill Creek Resort

We had a great two-night stay in the vintage camper van! It rained a lot Saturday night, but the van kept us dry and warm. Very effective space heater! It was stocked with many great amenities like various cookware, a kettle, a French press, etc. We were able to cook some delicious meals in the van. There was no wine opener or hand soap, however. There were multiple sets of sheets and pillowcases, so that felt clean and organized. We didn't get a chance to use the outdoor cooking supplies because of the rain, but that was nice to have! The camper ceiling is a bit low, so if you are taller (6'1 and above), be mindful of your head. The showers take quarters, so plan accordingly if you want to use them. Overall, a cozy stay!

Simple camping, but sweet camping. Very convenient…close to Chico center, but quiet and private. Clean porta-potty, sink with water, and a picnic table. Other campsite pretty close but neighbors just parked/camped on other side of a tree, which provided a screen. Owner/farmer very friendly and shared some fresh picked strawberries with us. Fell asleep to the sound of owl hoots. All around a great experience!

Weekend Trip to Maple Creek Ranch

This is a great spot with great hosts. Our spot was tucked into the woods with no one nearby, with a fire ring, a heavy duty picnic table, and a nice tent pad. Ron, the host, brought a 10 gal water container to help us get set up and gave us the lay of the land. Nearby was a very nice port-a-potty, a temporary solution while they work on their septic system for campers. The weather was cold, so when we were down by the charming pond, Ron had a fire going for us. At the pond, the grill setup is really nice. Due to weather changes, we didn't get to explore all the property and trails, but we are really looking forward to returning.

4 nights at Wild Plumas California

Very private and quiet. We were the only ones there at that time (April) besides the camp director. There is 1 outdoor shower with hot water and 1 spout to haul water from. We had a nice time there.

3 nights at Corning Oaks

It was a great break from busy state parks and all the activity that is included with them. It was an easy on / off to interstate 5 . Would be sure to stop again if I was in the area.

Great private camp spot! Even after having the Park fire, the camp area is still beautiful. The pond was awsome for my daughter to catch and release. It's a short walk down there. There's a general store close for extra ice and the hosts were very nice! BRING MOSQUITO REPELLENT! After getting the fire going and the citronella coils burning they stay away.

YUBA CANYON VISTAS

Hi I am Robert your Hipcamp host, welcome to Yuba Canton Vistas. Each campsite here is unique but all are intended to offer a great camping experience for campers who wish to experience Nature up close and recharge themselves away from stress and confusion. Each site is separate and away from others so as to offer privacy and a sense of place. Let me tell you about each site in numerical order as that is how you will find them listed. The sites have individual names as well as numbers so let’s start with site 1 SITE 1 Site number 1 is TANBARK On this site you will meet a Tanbark Oak Tree , she is young yet but will give you nice afternoon shade. She is called Tanbark because the bark of her kin was once used in curing raw hides into leather. The bark stripped from these trees was placed in a vat along with water and the strong Tannic Acid helped in curing the hides. Deeper into the canyons and below the driveway leading to the property you can see some of her Grandmothers, many times larger and older. Your tree is probably 50 years old while they are 200 or more years old. Note that this tree is one of several species of Evergreen Oaks that live on the property alone with other Oaks which are Deciduous and loose their leaves in the fall giving us a final golden show then. Your Tanbark isn’t showy at all and looks the same year round. She is a quiet tree and will see to your restful nights. SITE 2 DOGWOOD Shading your camp is a Pacific Dogwood tree, early in the year campers can enjoy her seasonal bloom but later you will have rosettes of Orange Red seed clusters for your pleasure. Dogwood will give you nice filtered shade and attractive bark patterns as well as fall colors as she prepares to shed her leaves for the winter. These leaves compost and add to the richness of the soil in the web of life in the Forrest and are important part of a healthy environment . This is an important function but was overlooked by Forest Management Specialists only a few years ago and Dogwoods were classed as WEED TREES, fortunately that attitude is changing and contemporary understanding sees the forest as a network of many beneficial exchanges. As part of this exchange let the soft rustle of Dogwood’s leaves lull you to blissful sleep on a peaceful night under her branches. SITE 3 This site is being redone. SITE 4 MADRONE Here you will camp next to a young Madrone tree with the dark green substantial leaves of an EVERGREEN tree. These leaves are meant to last through a few seasons so they are sturdy, thicker and a little waxy as compared to the leaves of a Dogwood tree for instance. Your Madrone is not large but from your camp you can see other larger ones, especially a group that grew up from the base of a long ago grandmother, now a mini grove. Madrone is a motherly tree and gives much to others, in the Spring clusters of little lantern like flowers which smell nice and and produce Nectar In the fall clusters of nutritious little fruits come on which look like mini Oranges and delight the Birds. On this small Ridge in addition to the trees you might find as I do a special quality, something that calls to the Spirit and I envision Native American people coming to this place to seek special understanding in times of stress or celebration. Mother Nature welcomes you here, rest well and enjoy special dreams. SITE 5 Greet the Sun. At site five you can see far over the river canyons to the top of The Sierra Crest, and early in the season, mountain sides of snow but at any time of year you may see the Sun come up over the the sharp outline of the Sierras Nevada Mountains. Depending on atmospheric conditions this can be quite dramatic as the day comes on back lighting the soft clouds that often gather above the high mountains. Such a great start for a day of exploring mountain trails or basking on the shore of the nearby Yuba River. SITE 6 The Hayfield, wait a minute where is the hay you might be thinking, well flash back to the year 1900 and you will see the hay, a whole hill top of it. It wouldn’t be the only Hayfield around for there were many others scattered through these hills. The Horse and Buggy era had it’s own negative Environmental impact. It took acres of land to produce enough hay to feed the Horses, Mules, and Oxen who did the work of moving people and freight from place to place, especially through these steep River Canyons. Think of it as mile per fork of hay or MPH you get the picture. Of course now the hay is gone and in it’s place tall Ponderosa Pines as well as many other tree Species inhabit this hill top. One can see here the rejuvinative capacity of Nature when give a chance, so there is yet hope. Sleep here where hay once grew and dream of positive change.Here the keen eye may see evidence of the many layers of human presence on this land, the Native Peoples presence was light but nearby an Acorn grinding rock, in the eighteen fifties Prospectors swarmed these hills and in the streams, large and small, left deep traces of their effort, the top of this hill was once known as "the wheat field'. Square nails and Horse Shoes sometimes turn up, cast offs of another time. The constant here has been the forest, the "wheat field" is gone without a trace and tall trees grow in old campsites. The list of species that thrive here is rather long, for in normal times, this was a prime area for trees and shrubs to grow in. Plant identification information is provided at camp. Learn more about this land: In a small clearing with tall Pines all around you may hear their song in the evening breeze, trees and hills mute other sounds in this isolated camp site. In addition to the Pines there are many other tree and plant species to enjoy. You're located in between the Yuba River and the New Bullards Bar Reservoir, so plenty of great access to water. The Ranch house where I live is a quarter of a mile away over a ridge or two and unseen in this quiet place. Deer and an occasional Bear may come by to see what you are doing in their forest. Back roads invite easy hiking while deep woods call the more adventurous. Please do not arrive after 8:00 pm unless you have coordinated a time with me prior to arrival. The sites are intended for tent camping so there is no access for camper vans except for very small ones.

Quail Ridge RV Park

Quail Ridge RV Park has almost 17 acres nestled in the Plumas National Forest. We do NOT have direct water access. We are surrounded by six lakes, with Sly Creek and Lost Lake Reservoirs being the closest (about 3 mi. north of us), two major rivers and Feather Falls, the 3rd largest waterfall in California (trail is currently closed until Spring of '24). Outdoor activities abound with fishing, swimming, boating, canoeing, kayaking, paddle boarding, hiking trails and mountain biking trails. You can also explore the local rivers and try your luck at gold panning. Our park is primarily divided into three areas: (1) RV sites for weekend RV's that have full hook-ups, which include 30/50 amp. electric, water and septic connection (no pull through sites); (2) an area in the middle of the park where permanent residents live; and (3) an area for volleyball, badmitten and playground on the opposite side of the park. Sorry, but due to the always present fire danger, no wood burning fires are allowed. You may use your own propane fire ring or propane or charcoal grill. We have clean laundry and showers and flush toilets on the north side of the park. There is one shower and one flush toilet for each men and women that are handicapped accessible. Showers cost $1 for 12 minutes of hot water. Cell phone service is spotty. AT&T/Cricket and sometimes Verizon work the best. We now have free Wi-Fi in the park! Quail Ridge RV Park is very pet friendly. However, we cannot accept aggressive breed dogs, or Pit-Bull mixed dogs (sorry, but our insurance company restricts these breeds). The Nisenan (pronounced nee-see-nan or nee-she-nan) are the original people of this place and their story and history is ripe for the telling. Because the gold rush seems to be the “beginning” of all current history books, we find it a perfect intersectional moment to tell the story of the people and culture who were here thousands of years before they met the gold rush head on. This is a brief introductory story of the Nisenan people. At a time when the local landscape was rich with Nisenan place names; at a time when the Nisenan people themselves were thriving and plentiful upon the land; before the coming of the California gold rush, before California even became a state, the Nisenan people had lived lives that were full of unique, cultural richness and great wealth here in their ancient homelands. They lived in ancient towns named Ostomah’, Woloyu, Wakadok, Panpakan and hundreds more. This landscape was laden with clean water, delicious food, strong medicine, pure spirit, ancient burial grounds, numerous animal species that are now gone, and was abundant with Nisenan families. Today, these ancient Nisenan towns lay beneath our modern towns of Nevada City and Grass Valley. It was unfortunate for the Nisenan that their territory would become ground zero for human greed and catastrophic changes that would soon befall them at the hands of the California gold rush. Tens of thousands of immigrants from every corner of the planet descended upon Nisenan lands to make their fortunes in the gold fields. Every tree was cut down to build the new towns and hundreds of miles of flumes, the large game herds were hunted to extinction, the natural food sources were destroyed by over population and later by cattle, and the salmon and the great rivers themselves were destroyed by hydraulic mining. Everything that the Nisenan relied on for survival was gone within the first two years of the gold rush. In addition to the environmental destruction of the land, the newly formed state of California’s own governor called for the extermination of the red race. Bounties were placed on American Indian heads. Indians were violently removed from their homes and died from murder, disease and starvation. Pockets of people survived here and there, sometimes because they had found a non-native citizen to be their champion; a champion who would be their voice and help navigate the new world for them. In the case of the Nisenan who lived within the Yuba and Bear River Watersheds, Belle Douglas was one such champion. Belle Douglas was a founding member of the Native Daughters of the Golden West (NDGW). Belle saw the abuses that were put upon the Indians and stood up to be their voice. The Nisenan could not read or write. Documents penned by Belle’s caring hand are contained within the local Nevada County Historical Society that show decades of activism on her part. It was directly because of Belle’s tenacity with the Bureau of Indian Affairs that the Nevada City Rancheria became a federally recognized reservation in 1913 via an executive order from then President Woodrow Wilson. The Nevada City Rancheria Nisenan Tribe held itself as a domestic foreign nation up until it was illegally terminated in 1964 and its reservation lands were sold at auction. Today, the surviving Nisenan families are ghosts in their own homelands. Being landless is extremely detrimental for the Tribal membership and the continuance of their culture. The Nisenan are trying very hard to raise their visibility with the non-native local community. To tell the story of this place prior to the gold rush is to give the Nisenan a spotlight on their past and a new focus on their future. Not only do the Nisenan survive today, but through all the devastation of the past, many of their old landmarks remain intact. Many of their sacred sites were destroyed during the mining devastation of the gold rush. Most of their sacred burial grounds are held by private property owners. But, a few are accessible within the parameters of both cultural districts of Nevada City and Grass Valley. *Nisenan medicine rock – Broad Street, Nevada City *Old reservation land of the Nevada City Rancheria – Cement Hill, Nevada City *Nisenan Burial Grounds – Cement Hill, Nevada City *Firehouse No.1 Museum that holds Nisenan photos, baskets and regalia – 214 Main Street, Nevada City *Nisenan Tribute Site on the Deer Creek Tribute Trail that includes interpretive signage, petroglyph art and Angkula Seo suspension bridge – Champion Mine Road, Nevada City *Numerous springs that were central to Nisenan culture – located in many places (Cement Hill, Under Sierra Nevada Hospital, etc.) *Nevada County FairGrounds is an ancient trade place for the Nisenan and place for 7-year trade events – McCourtney Road, Grass Valley *Northstar House is the site of the old Chief Weimar’s main town site – Old Auburn Hwy, Grass Valley *Loma Rica was the site of an old burial ground and Nisenan town site – Brunswick Road, Grass Valley *Empire Mine State Historic Park was the site of another Nisenan town – Empire Road, Grass Valley *Sierra College Nevada County Campus sits on another Nisenan town site – Sierra College Road, Grass Valley *Site of the Holt Brother’s Saw Mill where a war happened with the Nisenan – Old Hwy 20, Grass Valley *Oustomah was placed in the sidewalk in bronze letters to solidify the name of the Indian town that Nevada City is now on top of – Broad Street, Nevada City *The old Nevada City dump site where Chief Kelly lived is now a co-housing complex – Broad Street, Nevada City Today, in 2022, the descendants of these Nisenan people continue to fight for justice, inclusion and visibility and equally important, for the justice and rights for this land. Learn more about this land: Coppercreek Camp is your mountain escape with fresh air and dark night skies perfect for star gazing. Coppercreek Camp is located in Plumas County 10 minutes from Lake Almanor, the Feather River, and Round Valley Lake. We are an hour from Lassen National Park. Picnic by our ponds, play in our sandpit volleyball court, relax in a hammock, watch your kids put on a show at our amphitheater, and watch the sunset over Keddie Peak. The frogs and crickets will sing you to sleep. Ask us how to access our trails and other ponds. Our bunk cabins are rustic with electricity, windows and locking doors, and each cabin has different bed accommodations. Please bring all of your own bedding and sleeping bags. Some of the cabins have heat/AC. We have tent sites available with picnic tables and can accommodate dry-camping RVs. We are still working on installing RV hook-ups. May through October there is a bath and shower house with hot water and flush toilets. Propane fire pits are available for rent. We have an ice machine on in the summer months located by our Main Lodge. The winters are cold and snowy, spring and fall are ideal with warm sunny days and cool, crisp nights, and the summer has warm evenings and hot days. There is plenty of shade with large pine, cedar and oak trees and open sunny space in the meadow. Coppercreek Camp is your perfect mountain getaway for the whole family! Please note: The Dixie fire burned our town of Greenville in August 2021. There is ongoing repair work in the local area, a lot of burned forest, but still many beautiful sites to see. Much of our property burned, but we are rebuilding and have beautiful green trees with plenty of shade. All of our pictures on HipCamp are post-fire and up-to-date. Please come and support our special town as we rebuild! The town of Greenville is located about 5 minutes from our property and offers a grocery store, Dollar General, gas station with mini mart, and wonderful food trucks. Ancestors of Maidu people lived here long ago. European settlers arrived and took control of the area. In recent history, a multi-cultural group of community members formed the Konkow Partnership to attempt to hold, steward, and preserve the wilderness that survives here. We look forward to your post fire visit. Learn more about this land: Congratulations Campers! The campground is reopened after the last couple of years of wild fires and tough winters. We are reopened even as repairs and upgrades are being made. Thank you to all visitors who love this place for your patience as we continue to improve the features of the Campground. Visit, fish, or camp in a rare jewel forest, hidden in the Sierra/Cascade foothills, less than an hour's drive to Chico, Oroville, or Paradise. Surviving forests of mature cedars, pines, oaks, and madrones provide shady camping, fishing along the lake shore, or picnicing along the banks of the creek that runs through a recovering creekside area. Stargaze or fly kites in our Great Meadow or admire copious wildflowers and other native plants on over 80 acres of wilderness. We provide a variety of recovering wilderness areas near water faucets, pit toilets and an RV dump station. Our site features mature forests, grassy meadows, a year-round creek in a fire recovery zone. The site also features lakefront shoreline access for bank fishing, a central fire pit and lots of space for group camping. Fires are permitted in the central pit when weather allows. The Lake Concow/Konkow Campground is a wilderness sanctuary and houses many variety of rare and endangered plants, animals, and insects. Please be aware of and give respectful space to all of the residents of the park. The list of year round residents may include poison oak, thorny berry vines, mosquitoes, ticks, spiders, deer, eagles, osprey, owls, squirrels, skunks, foxes, bears, mountain lions, snakes, bats, and more. Please be responsible for personal camp supplies and trash. The Campground is a Pack In/Pack Out location and garbage cans are supplied near the office house near the entrance. Good hiking shoes, protective clothing, and hats are recommended. All Campground faucets supply delicious, potable water tested regularly. The modern listings spell the name Concow, Ancestors spelled it Konkow. Both are correct, though may give different search results. There is plenty of room for parking large vehicles and for turning around. TOW VEHICLES MUST STAY THE DURATION OF THE CAMPING VISIT. Sorry, we DO NOT allow towed-in-and-dropped-off campers or 5th wheel trailers at this time. This may change as clean up work progresses through the year. Stay tuned for updates. Thank you.

The diva den was my old music studio and the main cabin is our family cabin. This is a magical and sacred space filled with a ton of memories please come join our community and nook in the sierras and make some more. We are based in between the middle fork of the Yuba river right where it meets up with Oregon Creek. If you like a long walk it is 2.5 miles down the dirt road to Oregon Creek and the middle fork of the Yuba. Driving takes 5 to 10 mins. The other direction is the largest lake in our county Bullards Bar Reservoir and Emerald Cove Marina. We are 1 mile down Marysville Rd. from a launch called dark day. There is a trailhead at the top of overflow boat parking for a public swimming hole on the lake. On our property, we have a main house with its own private facilities such as a kitchen, shower, and bath. On the land, we have 9 total unique cabin and canvas tent structures converted into boutique-like campsites. We have an epic outdoor entertaining kitchen and patio with an outdoor pizza oven and a little dog rinse behind the outdoor shower. The bathhouse is right across the way and provides a private but shared guest shower house, tub and sink. The sauna and fenced-in dog area are near the shipping container site. The sauna has just been remodelled with a shower and bathtub right outside the sauna house. Like anywhere in the woods there is an hour at sunset when you may have mosquitoes down near the sites in the spring and some of the summers depending on the year. We have a natural spray for that or fans in the kitchen. Off the path, you may find poison oak in the thick of the woods. So please stay on the marked trails.

Enjoy the serene environment as nature continues to flourish. - Ongoing Restoration: We’re committed to rejuvenating the land and ensuring your experience remains as wonderful as ever. ================= The Maple Creek Ranch and Tree Farm has been family owned and operated since 1934. The patriarch of the family, whose family had moved here from Sweden, had a great love of the forest and trains. The property was one of the first certified tree farms in California with the goal of nurturing a healthy forest. In the 1960’s, a mile of railroad tracks was laid and the whistle of a small, steam engine train could be heard throughout the community. Local residents and kids were treated to free train rides and special events for many years. There is a natural spring with a small creek that supplies the ponds with fresh water year around. There is also a small canyon on the property with a larger stream called Mud Creek. The land is rich in Indian history and there a artifacts and other signs on the Indians presence. The Cohasset area is relatively unknown. 15 miles from our property is Deer Creek and the Lasson National Forest is about a 2 hour drive north. While staying with us you can pitch your tent on our private 500 acres. We have 2 primitive camping spots on our property. Each spot has a picnic table and fire pit. There is a flush toilet shared for both camp sites. * During freezing weather the toilets may be closed so they don’t freeze! Please check before booking *The spots are spread out to ensure privacy. Our property is surrounded by the forest and is loaded with deer, squirrels, turkeys and other forest animals. We have numerous walking trails, a fresh water pond for fishing and swimming. Please notify us if you have an RV. Site 1 is best for RV's. Site 2 can accommodate smaller RV's.

From mountain adventures to serene lakeside retreats, camping near Belden unlocks a wealth of California’s outdoors. East of Belden, Plumas National Forest is a haven for off-highway vehicle (OHV) camping and trail riding. Campers can venture into the forest’s rugged terrain on backcountry 4x4 roads before retiring for the night at lakeside tent sites with picnic tables, food lockers, fire rings, and potable water systems. For a peaceful day of fishing, head to Feather River or Bucks Lake to reel in rainbow trout, striped bass, and kokanee salmon. For an otherworldly trip, head an hour and a half out of Belden to Lassen Volcanic National Park.
