I learned to ski here when there was an old ski hill and tow ropes! Lots of mountain trails to hit right out the front door! My Father and Grandfather both spent time here and nothing has changed! It is single story with all open beam ceilings, wood floors throughout and hiking right out the door to miles and miles of trails! Each campsite is approximately one acre, and generously-distanced from neighboring campers. Amenities include its own fire ring with grilling grate and picnic table(s).
The campsites are both cozy enough for 2 or spacious enough for large groups and can easily accommodate a mix of RVs, camper vans and tents.
From June to October the 100+ area open meadow is filled with horses grazing and galloping about (please don't pet or feed!) A four-seasons destination, the Ranch has year-round experiences with warm summers and snowy winters. An excellent basecamp, within close proximity to the lake, ski slopes, Pinnacles, hiking/biking and off-roading trails.
After a day filled with adventure or ultimate relaxation, be sure to enjoy the breath-taking sunsets over the meadow.
The evenings blanket guests with a sea of stars. Toast up some s’mores and warm up some hot-coco over a beautiful, crackling campfire. Remember the s’mores and always follow the “Leave No Trace” principles. There are large trash bins by the entrance.

Please note:
OHV’s are allowed. They count as one of the allowed vehicles per campsite and must adhere to the speed limit (10mph) and remain on established camp roads while on the property. They may not be driven from 8pm to 8am. It is strictly forbidden to ride your vehicles through the forest, meadow or off any established roads on or off property. Please research which of the surrounding forestry roads allow for your vehicle type to be driven on. Campsites on the west side of the meadow (F, G & H sites) are partially accessed by a forestry road that does not allow dirt bikes.
Horses: The horses which may be roaming the meadow during your stay are not property of Holcomb Valley Ranch. When horses are present, guests and their pets are prohibited from entering the meadow. Please do not approach, interact, feed or touch the horses. This is for your safety and the safety of the horses. Do, however, take lots of photos! They make a perfect backdrop:)

Our camp site, F7, was in a perfect location: close enough to big bear and remote enough to enjoy a cool night under the stars. There was a fire pit and bench included. We had enough space to choose were set up our tent and park the car. Spigots were available throughout the camp grounds. Host was great!

We had such a wonderful time at Jami’s lovely cabin. It is rustic, charming, cozy, and romantic… Everything we were hoping it would be. Jami was a very accommodating and thoughtful host. We loved the vibe of the area. We also loved the sound of the creek, putting us fast to sleep every night. The hot tub under the forest canopy, and the outdoor shower made our experience that much more memorable. Our dogs also loved visiting and exploring the property. We will definitely be back again.

My fiance and I stayed at Holocomb Valley for the weekend and this is our review. The site in it self (G4) was spacious and had plenty of shade. When driving up to the campground, Ed (host), called us to let us know where to go and what site we're at. As for the road to the site, that was an experience for sure! I drive a Honda Civic so if you're worried if your car can make it - it will, mine did! As we got to the site and finished setting up we noticed there were only portable toilets. The toilets were very clean and did not stink. Please be aware to ask ahead of time which site you are at since sites F, G, and H do not have flush toilet or showers. Additionally, the closest water spigot to our site was a 5 min walk. Overall it was a great camping spot - just next time I'd bring more water and a car that has 4WD.

This is a nicely decorated cabin that is cozy, yet spacious. It has two large upstairs bedrooms, though one is more of a loft in that it doesn’t have a door to close. Downstairs has the bathroom and basic kitchen and living area, along with a front and rear deck. It’s definitely not flashy or state of the art, but has more of a relaxing analog chill vibe. I really enjoyed staying here!

Ed’s communication was top notch! In addition to sending us a map, he called to check us in and make sure we didn’t have any questions. The ranch is at the site of an old Boy Scouts campground so there are a lot of cool things to see just by walking the grounds. The site was clean and ready for us when we arrived. It was beautiful and secluded. We will definitely be back!

Had a great time at Holcomb Valley Ranch and am definitely looking forward to another stay. Hopefully this time closer to the field with the horses!
The restrooms were well-maintained and cleaned regularly. The host was welcoming and responsive. The forested campsites sit on the edge of a wide open fenced field with horses, making for a great sunset view.
The road up is a bit bumpy and 95% dirt roads, but we saw some Teslas and even a few civics get up just fine. It's also a bit difficult to navigate through the campground at night since there aren't any paved roads. So I'd recommend getting up with daylight to spare or at least some really good flashlights to find your way around.
There was also a good amount of coyote activity, so I wouldn't recommend bringing any pets.

Really beautiful and very rustic! It could use a crew to do a litter sweep, and fix some of the picnic tables and toilets. One of the sections is near a shooting range, which is unnerving. But overall, the property is serene, private, and peaceful. We’ll be back.

Where to go
California Citrus State Historic Park
Ax the apples and sip some citrus at California Citrus State Historic Park about an hour north of Apple Valley. Despite no camping directly in the park, there are plenty of options in the surrounding areas. Campers won’t need to go far before finding cabin rentals, tent sites, full RV hookups, and mountain retreats. Open year-round, this gracious grove provides the perfect place to kick back, relax, and enjoy some juice. Greeted by an old-fashioned juice stand, visitors can book guided tasting tours of the orchards, explore exhibits in the museum, or test their treasure-hunting skills with some geocaching.
Holcomb Valley
Head about an hour southeast to Holcomb Valley, and discover a piece of the past existing in the present. Once one of the richest gold-mining areas, travelers now trek here for camping, hiking, rock climbing, and water sports. Work your way up to Holcomb Crossing Group Camping with an elevation of 5,292 feet, marvel at the mountainous campsites, or tuck away into the trees. As an added bonus, explore some spooky sites in the nearby ghost town of Belleville.
Mojave Narrows Regional Park
Grab some fishing rods, and saddle up the horses as you head to Mojave Narrows Regional Park. With surrounding lakes and an on-site splash pad, this campground is a great way to cool things down in the desert sun. Tent sites on the shoreline of Horseshoe Lake, access to fully-equipped RV spots, or group Equestrian-style adventures let campers take to nature in whatever floats their boat—literally! Horseshoe Lake and Pelican Lake make this the perfect park for canoeing, kayaking, and paddleboarding.
When to go
Camping near Apple Valley in April, May, September, and October is best, as these shoulder season months offer the beginning and end of warmer weather with a chance of seeing the springtime desert bloom in April and May. The Apple Valley climate is welcoming year-round, and draws campers in for every season to rest, recharge, and breathe in the open air.
