The homestead was built in 1911 and was one of the original postal pickups in the area.  The ranch is located between Mesa Verde National Park, Hovenweep National Monument and backs up to Canyon of the Ancients National Monument. Our family has lived in McElmo Canyon for over 40 years and the campground has hosted camping and outdoor educational groups since 1965. We are a family run ranch with an operating hay farm, horseback riding business, and carriage shop.

Shepherd's hut · Sleeps 2
Enjoy the simplicity of a shepherd camp wagon located within walking distance to Canyons of the Ancients National Monument. Imagine the perfect experience... in the morning you see ancient Puebloan ruins while riding a horse on our guided trail rides or hike Sand Canyon trail on your own, then enjoy an afternoon of wine tasting at the local vineyard 1 mile away, and in the evening come back to your cozy camp wagon to enjoy seclusion under dark, starry skies. Our shepherd camp wagons are cute and unique. The Pioneer wagon is an authentic antique wagon from the early 1900's on modern running gear and The Rancher wagon is a modern build on traditional running gear. They each have a full size bed that sleeps two with a pull out table and built in seat benches. They have Dutch doors and windows which can be opened to provide airflow and natural light. Inside outlets are provided for basic charging needs. A private, outside sitting area is next to each wagon to enjoy sunrises and sunsets. *AMENITIES: Running water, fire pit, picnic tables and shower house/toilet are located in the campground but not in/at the wagons. *PETS: Camp The Rancher wagon allows well behaved pets, PLEASE no pets on the furniture. A pet security deposit of $100 Venmo/PayPal will be asked for at check in. After inspection with no issues, it will be refunded. Quiet and Beautiful
We had a great time camping at Rodney and family’s site. The bath house was clean and it was great to be able to shower after hiking. The location is quiet at night and the stars are beautiful. It is also right next door to the canyon of the ancients.

This is by far my favorite spot I’ve ever stayed at in my RV, not only is it absolutely beautiful but the hosts are so welcoming and friendly and on top of anything you may need. You can tell how much they love this land and truly how much they care about it. Would absolutely stay here again!

It's almost like glamping in the wilderness canyon with ALL the electric and water, flush toilet, cooking area (except you have to cook your own meals). Rodney is a great and kind host- makes you feel more relaxed just talking with him! Beautiful views of Ute Mountain.

I loved camping here! We were the only ones there. It was quiet, and lovely. Rodney was very welcoming. The shower house was a hike, but cozy. The grounds were beautiful. I would certainly stay here again. There is no Wi-Fi, or cell phone service, and it was glorious to be off the grid!

Real good guys
Unfortunately we had an emergency and didn't get to stay. But they were very understanding and got us our refund. We hope to stay here in the future when we return to Mesa Verde because they were very nice and communicated well beforehand.

Wonderful hosts and sites!
Man, what a beautiful space to call "home" for a few days! The solace alone gives this spot a 10! Great communication from camp hosts, when meeting us and when needed, without our prompting! Thank you Rodney and Jessica! You're within 40ish minutes from Mesa Verde NP and the campsite is within walking distance to Canyons of the Ancients hike! AMAZING! The visitor center is so worth the visit before venturing out - about a 40 minute drive from the campsite. This spot is already tugging me back!
