Swings Camp is 5 acrres that are at the center of the original Stephen F. Austin Land Grant on the Texas Gulf Coast. You will be camping under four champion Live Oak trees that are the tallest in Texas, or the United States, or in the world! In 2018 we hung tall swings that will deliver a thrill you have never felt on a normal playground swing. We used our Genie manlift to anchor stainless steel bolts into the tree limbs and we used stainless steel sailboat rigging for the four swings hung from the limbs over 40 feet high. One is a family bench seat with drink holders, leg rests, and a sunshade. Another two are round net swings hanging on one wire that can be pushed into a monster circle spin for screaming fun.
The ground under these trees has sections of the original sidewalks using hand-made bricks to connect the the plantation's main house to the sugar mill and other buildings. The western border is the shoreline of McFadden Bayou where the sugar cane crops were put on pole boats and shipped to markets across the country. This land never has flooded because the original settlers knew how the select the highest elevation for their houses and sugar mills. We cleared the jungle of small yaupon trees and vines and brush only in the center of the five acres, so all the property lines are dense jungles blocking any views of houses or roads. You will feel "into the wild", but the Brazos Mall/Walmart/Kroger/HEB are only 15 minutes away.
About three acres of the five acre property are cleared grassy fields and you can drive vehicles right into your site if you are tent camping or booking one of our RVs. The other land is a tropical rainforest jungle just waiting to be explored with grapevines, blackberries,passion fruit, tangerines, plus some honeybee nests way up high in old broken tree branches. Practice your bushcraft or backpacking skills! Take the Cypress Trail to see the big Cypress trees on the shore of historic McFadden Bayou. See if you can find the almost buried foundation of the sugar cane grinder; horse drawn in the early 1800s and using a steam engine starting in the 1840s.
Each site has a fire ring with grill and we can sell you lots of oak and pecan firewood for grilling, cooking and late night parties. You can sing loud because there are no close neighbors and lots of jungle between you and them. You can sleep late because the sunrise is delayed an hour or so by the tall trees.
