Desert Teahouse

3 sites ¡ RVs, Tents30 acres ¡ Presidio, TX
This land is pristine desert land north of Presidio, TX The den is a bell tent with a 12 foot diameter. It is made of fabric and a protected plastic floor. The tent zips completely closed so you don't have to worry about critters. It can be a bit hot during the day, but cools off really quickly once the sun goes down. It is a twin bed. There is plenty of space for other people to sleep in sleeping bags. There is a parking space right next to the tent, about 30 feet away. It is a pull off of the main road, you can't miss it. There is a rock path guiding you to the tent from the parking. I am available to offer tea at the teahouse. If you are interested please reach out to me when you book and I can tell you the details. If you don't book a night but are interested, please search Desert Tea Ceremony in AirBnB experiences. Don't forget you are in the desert. There are snakes, scorpions, tarantulas, coyotes, javelinas and perhaps mountain lions. But don't worry, most people will never see most of the animals. But just be mindful and use a flashlight at night if you are walking around. You are responsible for your own water, food, cooking equipment, toilet paper and trash. If you need to use the bathroom, please dig a small hole and then cover it. There is a camping zone with a palm tree shade structure, a pizza oven, a wooden standing height table and a fire pit with some rustic seating. If you want to explore, please take your shoes off and be respectful of the space. It is meant for meditation, yoga and tea. Please no food or drinks that may stain the wood. We have heard from guests that the bird watching on the property is excellent. I'm not an enthusiast yet... maybe you can help me learn which birds are on the property. I see hawks sitting on ocotillos a lot, that's the extent of my knowledge :) We are 2.5 miles off the highway in the middle of the desert. We have one neighbor who may drive by and they are friendly. Otherwise your neighbors are birds, jack rabbits and you may hear some javelinas at night and strange lights off in the distance. But they are just cars on distant highways... we think.

Rio Bravo Ranch

8 sites ¡ RVs, Tents1000 acres ¡ Presidio, TX
Rio Bravo Ranch is a family owned ranch that borders the Rio Grande and Casa Piedra Road.  We have cultured a love for camping and the outdoors on this ranch as children and young adults.  One day we were sitting on "the backside," enjoying the amazing vistas, solitude and a campfire when the idea came to us that we should share this amazing place with others seeking this type of experience.  We tried to think about what makes camping enjoyable to us - no immediately adjacent campers, a nice fire ring/shade structure, a nice, large tent site and vistas with unobstructed views.  We have incorporated this into our campground design which, when completely finished, will encompass several hundred acres of Chihuahuan desert vistas.  We are also fortunate enough to have a large riparian area on the property.  It is in this area, amongst the 40ft tall cottonwood and willows, we often find Gambel's Quail, Scaled Quail, Javelina and numerous bird species including the occasional turkey.  We would love nothing more than to share this wonderful place, where we grew up, with souls seeking solitude, adventure and inspiration.  Our eastern entrance is just a few miles outside the Big Bend Ranch State Park boundary, conveniently located on Casa Piedra road about 1.6 miles north of FM 170.

Rancho Del Mapache - Big Bend

8 sites ¡ RVs, Tents41 acres ¡ Presidio, TX
We purchased this land in April of 2020 with the intent of restoring and transforming this now feral land into a natural oasis; a restorative, sacred place for flora, fauna, mind, body, and spirit. We love traveling and camping and recognized a need for private camping without the hustle and bustle sometimes experienced on public lands. Rancho del Mapache is still in its infancy, but with your help, we will restore the land to a beautiful, natural, native landscape and preserve it for all to enjoy affordably and privately.  The area of presidio is likely the longest continually settled place in North America, with the history spanning tens of thousands of years. More recently, the Spanish settled the area In the early 1600s, establishing a mission and garrison. Despite extended human habitation, the desert remains remarkably unchanged. Roads are cut, rivers are tapped, new plants appear, still the desert remains. The area also holds the records as the hottest and coldest places in the state of Texas. This 40-acre parcel was once part of the town of Adobes. The area is now called the Adobes Ghost Town. Cotton and sheep were farmed from the mid-1800s until the late 1970s. There are still plenty of artifacts to explore pointing to a tough life in a rugged land. Whatever antiquities you come across, please leave them as they were found so someone else can enjoy the same discovery.

Nestled in the vast expanse of Presidio County lies a unique gem of 10 acres of raw land, awaiting the touch of visionaries and nature lovers alike. A perfect spot for off-grid and secluded getaways, this property offers both solitude and the raw beauty of Texas wilderness. The landscape boasts natural arroyos and fair-weather creeks. While the county receives an average annual rainfall of 10 inches, the infrequent but ample showers breathe life into these water features a few times each year, adding to the serenity of the scene. The area is home to a myriad of wildlife, including deer, pronghorn, desert sheep, and javelina. If you're lucky, you might even spot the occasional black bear or cat. IF YOU WILL BE STAYING 3 NIGHTS OR LONGER, ASK ME FOR A DISCOUNT CODE!! We offer a uniquely secluded setting with stunning views of the Chisos Mountains. Located just 7 miles from the entrance to Big Bend National Park, and 10 miles from the visitors' center at Big Bend Ranch State Park, it is a perfect base from which to explore all the hiking, boating, and scenic beauty that West Texas is known for. The arts, history, and entertainment of Terlingua Ghost Town are less than 2 miles away. Like most ruins in the Ghost Town, my stone house was built in the early 1900s to house a miner’s family from the nearby Rainbow Mine. I bought the property in 1986 and began restoring and rebuilding. In 2019 I retired here from NYC and began exploring possibilities for sustainable tourism. West Texas is one of the best places in the United States to view the Milky Way (both Big Bend parks are certified as International Dark Sky parks). We use shielded LED lighting around buildings and pathways to cut down on light pollution and optimize stargazing opportunities for our astrotourists. And we are applying for dark sky certification from the Texan By Nature program. Bear in mind that this is the desert, in all its rugged glory. There are critters, rocks, plants with thorns, slippery slopes, sink holes, rusted artifacts and broken glass from decades long past. Bring sturdy shoes and a flashlight, and stay on the paths! We may eventually add a few more sites and expand our amenities, but our intention is always to provide remote, low-density accommodation for folks who are respectful of the land.

Ocotillo Acres

1 site ¡ RV, Tent70 acres ¡ Terlingua, TX
This is our piece of Desert. Come take a look!! Learn more about this land:Is the journey half the fun? Do you dream of off-grid living or expedition camping? Do you enjoy shows like Naked and Afraid or Alone? If you said no to any of these questions we may not be the right Hipcamp for you; but if you said yes… you’ve found the right spot. Ocotillo Acres is a nudist friendly campsite and long term project that Molly and I have taken on which allows us a place to get away from quite literally everything about city life. We are remote and the drive out can be difficult. A 4wd vehicle can be required as the roads are rough and rocky, but the rewards are plentiful once you arrive. We are so remote in fact that in Feb 2021 we were happy to host “Alone: The Arctic” and “Alone: The Beast” contestant Donny Dust with Paleo Tracks Survival and Ryan Maguire with Wyld Ryde Outdoors as the location for a few of their Primitive Survival Workshops. Once arrived you will have 70 Acres of pristine Chihuahuan Desert to explore as you wish. We have cleared out a camping area, built a nearby rain catchment structure to provide shade, and have a tool box with emergency essentials if needed. Other than those items, there is nothing to facilitate a comfortable visit. If you're still reading this... the place is amazing. Stars fill completely dark skies, and coyotes howl to welcome you to their home. We've seen Tarantulas, Quail, Aoudad, Horny Toads, all types of cactus, fossils, and even if Molly doesn't believe me... a big freakin' rattlesnake. We do ask that there be no hunting and no killing of the wildlife, but you'll have all 70 acres to explore and we hope you see a bunch. While we like to think of our place as a destination, we are located about an hour away from both BBNP and BBRSP if that’s why you’re visiting the area. Feel free to set up your Basecamp here and daytrip to either park, or plan your visit on either end of your stay in the area. Due to our location Ocotillo Acres is a fair weather destination and if rain or snow occurs before or during your visit, your arrival or departure could be delayed by several days while the roads and river beds dry. There are only two routes to get to the property and they both go through areas that can flash flood during heavy rains. While there are not any bathroom or shower facilities, there is a portable toilet (Luggable Loo) and trash bags on site. If used we ask that you be prepared to haul out all waste. While our desert retreat is pet friendly, please clean up after them and dispose of properly. There is very limited cell signal. Satellite communication or emergency beacon is recommended. There are structures visible from some parts of our property, but do not rely on people actually being in those structures; especially in an emergency situation. Have an Instagram? Follow us @Ocotillo_Acres_TX for more info and to keep up to date on the progress.Search for Ryan's Youtube video titled "Primitive Skills Workshop // Chihuahua Desert // Epic Adventure" for some more insight of the location.
